Being raised in Texas and a frequent attendee at Southwest Conference games back when football was fun, I have always known about Texas A&M's tradition of the "twelfth man." So when did it become okay for pro teams such as the Seattle Seahawks to appropriate such terms for their own psychological and, I am sure, financial benefit. I know the Aggies sell plenty of "Twelfth Man" shirts and jerseys. So I am betting that the Seattle franchise does as well. Doesn't it seem that they owe A&M a little for using a tradition that has been steeped in a great deal more football history than the short lived time in Seattle's pro football history? BTW, I am not a huge Aggie fan in any way, but fair is fair. Hey, Ford paid SMU for the running pony logo for Mustangs so Seattle can fork over some dough as well.

I am a huge Texas A&M. I love the atmosphere down there. If it weren't for the fact that they aren't very strong in the journalism department (if they have one at all), I would transfer down there in a heart beat.

But good call on the 12th man theme. A&M officials not only sent a request to the Seahawks in '04 and '05 to stop using their trademark, but also the Bills and the Bears as well. The Bills and the Bears quit using the term, but Seattle did not respond at all (that's how they are up there ... liberal.) ;)

But a year ago A&M filed a suit against the Seattle team and ended up settling out of court. A&M licensed the Seahawks to continue using the phrase and got in return a licensing fee and public acknowledgement that the phrase originally developed from the Aggies.

I am a teacher, a mother and wife and I like to think I am a pretty good citizen. I read ALOT. I also write a good deal on various blogs. I appreciate a chance to respond to what we see in the news. I think that by posting our opinions we can probably find that everyone is more alike than we are willing to admit. Face it, people just like to argue. I would also like to say how much I appreciate having a forum for my views.
