Just Sad. It sounded like the plot for a horror film-a reclusive neighbor, unseen for months, is found to have been dead for perhaps a year or more. Weirder still, someone has been mowing the lawn, collecting the mail and I suspect, collecting whatever pension or social security payments were coming. Cars were seen coming and going, and all the while a frail and failing little old lady passes without even the dignity of a proper memorial. I wish it were just a movie plot, but it happened here. And it's not the first. I have commented before that part of what makes us human is our connection to others. In the past, that was basically family, but now my fellow 'Boomers like to think that their friends will care for them. Many people of my age pat themselves on the back for not having kids, for eschewing the bonds of marriage and for indulging their whims. It's their choice, that's for sure, but I am concerned that as our population ages, and as the young population dwindles in proportion, who is going to care about an old lady and her dog? Today the UN issued a concern about the possible reduction of the population of the former USSR by nearly 40% in the next forty years. Their views on what is laughingly called family planning-as in multiple abortions-paired with poor nutrition, increased alcoholism and risky personal behavior is fueling this fear. They aren't alone-France and Germany are not far behind. There's something to be said for having family.

This story is unbelievable, even in today's crazy world !

Someone had to know something, and took advantage of the situation for personal gain, or something.

There just aren't words. Possibly are relative had been living there... collecting HER social security? Just beyond belief. How many elderly die sick and alone, because family don't give a care.

How did no one smell anything? That's a smell you can't deny. With ppl coming and going, getting the mail, mowing the lawn, etc. SOMEONE had to have smelled something.
Just sad..

I saw this earlier and immediately thought "Europe"...I have seen so many stories of pension fraud from that neck of the woods that I was almost shocked to see "Dallas" as the location...

I agree with your concern. Our population is not as bad off as the replacement rate of Europe, but many of our "replacements" are contributed by illegals. Well, actually, since the illegal gives birth here, the child is automatically a citizen.

Anyway, at some point the supply and demand will will swing to demand, and that should scare anyone contemplating retirement in the coming years.

This tops the story of the woman that was stuck on the toilet seat all those years.

What will happen next?

Had to be for her SS checks, or some monetary thingY. It will only get worse... now we will have to worry about gas tanks being drilled into, cigs getting stolen, etc etc.

I hope they find whoever was living with this poor woman's remains and they crucify him or her. There's no respect, no decency in such a person. Rats on two legs.

Mabey they kept her around for sentimental reasons..... Whatever reasons, it must have been hideous to see and smell.

I am a teacher, a mother and wife and I like to think I am a pretty good citizen. I read ALOT. I also write a good deal on various blogs. I appreciate a chance to respond to what we see in the news. I think that by posting our opinions we can probably find that everyone is more alike than we are willing to admit. Face it, people just like to argue. I would also like to say how much I appreciate having a forum for my views.
