Adopt A Dallas Pet

On April 28th the Quality of Life Committee voted unanimously in favor of sending the new Dallas animal related ordinances to the full City Council in June.

One of the proposals causing the most controversy centers around mandatory spay/neuter legislation (you can read the entire ordinance on the Ordinance Summary page of this website). Even though this plan contains numerous exemptions, it has become the center of a very vigorous debate. Simply stated, the proposal will require owners to spay or neuter their pets (dogs, cats) unless they pay a yearly breeder fee.

Opponents argue that this interferes with their "rights" as pet owners. What they leave out of the discussion is that last year Dallas Animal Services euthanized almost 30,000 animals. The number rises to nearly 200,000 when you look at totals for shelters city wide. 25% of the animals euthanized each year are purebred.

The bottom line: this ordinance is not about "rights", it's about life and death. Every three minutes a dog or cat is killed in Dallas. It is cruel to bring one more litter, even a purebred litter, into the world as long as we are killing so many healthy animals on a daily basis.

Please help show your support for responsible pet ownership by signing this petition in favor of the new mandatory spay/neuter ordinance.

The animals of Dallas thank you!

Every signature counts so please forward this email, or send a personal note, to everyone you know who is also in favor of passing the mandatory spay and neuter ordinance.

Thanks so much for your time!

I'm more concerned about my freedoms as a tax payer, and the right not to have to pay for other people's negligence. Dallas Animal Services has a $7 million annual budget, a great part of which goes to euthanizing animals. I'd love to save my hard-earned money and the animals as well by mandating S/N. This is common sense.

I agree totally that pets should all be "fixed" if you are not a breeder. I'm sick of the stray cats that breed like crazy. I am especially sick to see all of the animals sent to shelters because the kitten/puppy wore off and the owner just can't seem to deal with a grown dog or cat.

For the average pet owner. If you don't have your pet(s) fixed, just what do you plan on doing with a litter of mixed breed pups? Sell them? Mutts don't bring very much money. Give them away? I see people in the Wal Mart parking lot all the time trying to do this. Some may succede, many do not. What happens to those animals? Spay/neuter your pet. Save yourself the hassle of trying to figure out what to do with a litter. Save me the hassle of having a pack of semi wild dogs running all over the neighborhood.

I agree that non breeding animals should be spayed or neutered. However, there are those who want to show or just want a purebred animal because they admire the breed. That is why they turn to small breeders like me . I am not a puppy mill. I have a small breeding stock I draw from that are spoiled rotten babies who live with me in my home . I make a little money to supplement my TRS and people get beautiful ,genetically sound animals. I make most of my new parents sign a spay neuter agreement and I don't sell to just anyone. If I think you are from a puppy mill or if I just plain don't like you, you don't get a dog. If I had to pay a fee on each of my breeders I would have to go out of business and more people would end up buying from puppy mills.

Don't worry, if the price of gas and food keep going up, we will be eating dogs. Breed on.
