I began going to the Mesquite Rodeo, way back in 86, seems forever ago.
The first bad wreck, I saw, a young man was killed , when bucked off a bull.
He landed on his back the bull was swinging around , his back legs kicking up. When they came back down they landed in the middle of the young man. He was 21, with a wife and small child.
During the years I worked there I saw many "wrecks" One bronc rider thrown off against the wall, broke both his arms, next time I saw him, they had both his arms in casts out to his sides with braces that attached to his waist. We kidded Him about becoming a waiter.
Frank McIlvain Jr. was trying to turn a bull, away from a rider, that was laying in the dirt. When He smacked him on the behind to make Him turn, He kicked straight back instead, catching  Frank, square in the mouth, knocking His front teeth into His sinus cavity,
Back they the Justin medical teams were there, and  evolving , into what they are today, always gave the greatest of help.
They now, also have a fund for cowboys that get hurt.
Why do they do what they do? Only the best make the money, yet they keep coming up , and keep trying. A few sayings, I heard a lot. about the pain, or broken Bones, "Cowboy Up"or "It's a long way from your heart" These guys/girls have "Heart"
Anytime You get a chance go see the Rodeo.
They best of the best, cowboys/cowgirls, and the nicest, and politest  people You could ever meet.

I saw that on the news. What you didn't hear or see was a friend,(Terry McIlvain) that was working the out gate, had His arm broken, when a bull coming out smashed the gate he was working.
A lot goes on in, and out of the arena. Rodeo is a rough, and demanding sport.

I enjoy watching the barrel racing and the bronc riding, but I have never understood the need to ride bulls. I know it dates back to prehistory, and I know other cultures have similar bouts with bulls such as the running of the bulls in Pamplona and bull fighting in many countries, but really, the way these bulls are rated for natural abilities and are somewhat coached in behavior by having it reinforced, makes this less of a sport and more of a gamble. As for rodeo folks, they are just like other folks, there are good and bad. My cousin was married to a bad'un who kidnapped their daughter and kept her away for twelve years. It takes all types.

Agreed Babysister, the rodeo can be lots of fun. Living and growing up around it, you kind of just take it for granted, but any time we have guests over and friends as far away as England, they always want to go to the Rodeo, it's just something you "do" when you are in Texas. I have to admit, even though I pass it several times a day and think I have seen all it has to offer... every time I take a friend there I get the same feeling I used to as a child, it's fun! I have grown up with families such as the Gay's and McIlvain's and you're right... you just won't meet any nicer people... Cowboy's through and through.

I really enjoy the Rodeos. They do it cause they love it. And for a lot less pay than fruity pro baseball players or footbal or baskettball. When they get hurt its because they slipped in the shower. Maybe not so much for the football players though.

I'm glad to hear they have a fund for the injured Babysister. Did they US Government fund it by raising taxes, or is this a private fund?
