Tuesday, I received a call om my cell phone. A paramedic telling me they were taking my daughter to a certain hospital, in the middle of Mesquite.
My daughter is fine, she had an asthma attack, and passed out  and called 911 since everyone was at work.
I rushed to this certain hospital, and couldn't find a parking place anywhere near the emergency room entrance. seems people that were there just visiting, are allowed to use those parking places. The is no designating  for emergency parking only, and there are no security guards to keep any that aren't  out. the outside of the emergency entrance was also strewn with cigarette butts, and people lounging,  on the  walled planter type places instead of benches provided. One car in a parking place looked like the family was having a picnic.
I rushed inside, told the young guy at the desk that my daughter had just been broke in and i needed to get to where she was. He asked my name,  i spelled it  he typed some more and finally said, "You will have to wait 15 or 20 minutes"
Well to say the least, after watching a family of 6  walk back to the back, young kids and all. I wasn't very nice. I told the guy my daughter could possibly die in that amount of time, being she was having a severe asthma attack.(yes she had been taking her medications)
I get  back to her room, after a few choice words, they had taken her vital signs. that's it!  no oxygen  no nothing, the paramedic and 2 nurses? were conversing,
They didn't hear any wheezing, so she must not be having any asthma attack!
I told them, that she has seldom wheezed when having these episodes, that she usually coughed and coughed until she couldn't breathe. That not everyone did everything the same.
Anyway, her boyfriend(soon to be husband), was at the desk they told him he couldn't come back because i was there!
That's when she exploded!  Got up and told the nurse? she was leaving! Didn't see a Dr  anywhere.
This hospital was where i took my 6 yr old twin, that was turning  blue(pneumonia) The head Dr. there said he didn't have a pediatrician on call and what did I expect  him to do?3I took him to children's  where they  took him from my arms, didn't ask any questions, and treated him for a week.
Anyway, I told my daughter to get a card made saying if she  needed to be transported to take her anywhere but to the hospital in the middle of Mesquite!

There is other categorys  so i put this in news

I find this post rather odd. I am not a Dr. I have called 911 for students under my care in schoools, who are having an asthma attack, wheezing, but do not have medications I can give. When the paramedicas arrive, they put on an oximeter (telling the ocygen content of the blood), listen to breath sounds, check vital signs, and then (when warranted) start a nebulizer treatment.

If in fact they took her Oxygen saturation, and it was above 96% with no wheezing, then it wasn't an asthma attack.

If, on the other hand, her sats were 84% and there was no wheezing, that is worse than wheezing, as you are not moving any air.

If she was able to "explode" after her BF arrived, I have to believe it was not a serious asthma attack. I rather doubt a hospital or the paramedics would be so negligent.

I know you won't like my response, but hey, it's what I think.

If an airway is compromised, as in restricted/constricted due to an allergy or asthma attack, Oxygen does nothing UNTIL YOU GET THE AIRWAY OPENED. That requires an inhalation treatment, sometimes epinephrine, to first correct the initial problem. Giving Oxygen to a person who has a compromised airway is like trying to fill up a tire with a hatchet stuck in it.

Oh my goodness, babysister! I Know that must have been a scary situation. Then to top it off it seems no one is doing much to help. I hope she is doing better now.

Have you ever considered that she may have anxiety attacks?

Backto, so what should have they done? I mean, if you know it was not good care, what SHOULD have they done, for a patient who is able to biatch at the nurse cuz her BF can't come in?

Nevermind, I see this is a one-sided conversation--and WHY fox featured it in the main window is beyond me.

Asthma means your airways are compromised. Asthma means you are either wheezing (at first), your ability to breathe is affected, you start to have "retractions" in your chest and neck muscles, then, you may not wheeze at all, because you can't move any air. Next, without assistance, you are dead.

If you are able to biatch cuz your BF isn't allowed in the room, it is NOT an emergency. It's more like a drama-queen-notice-me issue.

WOW! Such compassion, be nice. The lady just wanted to vent her frustration. I thought that was what blogs are for. She needs a hug.

BY THE WAY...if you get the medical records, and they did NOT do an Oximeter reading, or listen to breath sounds, or administer a necessary treatment, then by ALL MEANS, SUE THEM.

However, I doubt you will find that there was neglect. Please keep me (us) informed, though.

illusions...

Are you this rude because it makes you feel better about yourself?

OR...

Is it because there was no one to teach you any manners?

Either way...

You're always bit*ching about Fox and their moderation (in your opinion...lack there-of), you're constantly hatin' on Texas...the way I see it, you can either.....

1. QUIT BLOGGING :)

2. GET THE HELL OUT OF TEXAS :)

As far as this blog being featured, I don't believe it is the MODERATORS (human) themselves actually picking and choosing which blogs to feature (I could be wrong though!) :)

Babysister - I hate that you had such a rough time at the hospital.... I will give you my take on it.

Lots of times, the problem is PATIENT EDUCATION. Nurses, docs, NO ONE takes a minute to SIT DOWN and explain what is going on. I have NO clue what it could have been - it could have been that they realized it wasn't asthma - it was anxiety related, so they were LIMITING visitors for that reason. It could have been they had an infectious patient near where she was, I have no clue.

But - the POINT is how YOU and your daughter FELT about how you were treated. And - you FELT you were treated badly, and that your daughter received inadequate care. And - if you feel that way - pursue it to your satisfaction. If ANY nurse allows a patient to leave their care area feeling as if they were uncared for, cared for inadequately, or their care was neglected - that nurse should have to account for their actions. Period. Even though it is probably an issue of not educating you and your daughter on either her condition, the policies, etc., it still should NEVER happen.
