Just a question....

Does one have to use antifreeze during warm months?

Since it is called antifreeze, isn't it for when the freezing temperatures are going on?

As long as the car has water in the system won't it keep cool?

The motor will actually run cooler with antifreeze. It keeps the motor from freezing in cold weather, but it also cools and transfers heat in the summer. It also helps to prevent rust. A motor will actually run hotter in the summer without antifreeze.

It is called anti freeze and coolant.
It not only lowers the freezing temperature of water, it raises the boiling point. But by far the most important aspect in the summer months is that it acts as a lubricant and anti corrosive / rust inhibitor.
Without it your water pumps life is severly shortened, the insides of your engine rust and the scale from this corrosion deposits in and clogs the radiator.
So spend a few bucks now on proper coolant or spend a few hundred (or thousand) down the road.
Yes in an emergency you can use straight water, but as soon as possible get the problem which caused you to add water solved and get proper coolant in before you suffer more damage. Also it is easy to forget that you just added water this summer when winter rolls around and it freezes (had a friend do this a couple years back) and then the water freezes solid, and if you are lucky it just pops a freeze plug (casting plug actually ) and does not crack your engine block.

Oh yeah, and if your radiator are has a big note, in giant black letters which says soemthing like "USE DEX COOL ONLY", do it.

I bought a used car that hadn't had proper coolant in it, I continued using improper coolant, since what i saw was greenish, not orange, like Dex-Cool and...I just 'got' to buy a new water pump and radiator because of all the nasty goo that had been growing for over a year.

There is also a couple of things to NEVER do. Do not add water pump lubricant to the water. I have seen it ruin a water pump. Never add an additive that lowers water temperature. It can have the opposite effect after a while, and actually raise the water temp. If anyone has a diesel, use Rotella oil, and use the proper additives to keep the fuel lines clean. The diesel at a lot of stations is not very good. It can be old and full of things you don't want in your engine. The best place to buy diesel is a truck stop, but you have to go miles away from the metroplex to find one.
