I was informed today of the amount of my current electric bill that is coming due--$348--that's almost DOUBLE what it was last month of around $180!!  My house is a 3 bedroom brick,  but not that big of one!  Watch out people--get ready to live with the thermostat at 80 degrees!  Any lower and we'll have to start eating less to save for electricity!

The price I pay for electric is 11.3kwh. The end of August it will rise to 15.6kwh. Fixed income, this sucks. The only thing running in my house during daylight hours is the fridge, and two window units. Should I turn off the fridge, and starve? Or should I turn off the window units, and die of heat stroke?

My BF is locked in at 13.78 per kwh, after he signed up for something at the fair last year.

Since last month, we have used about 75% nire kwh, and the bill is up accordingly.

You may want to check your usage this period against the last one. It was about 12 degrees more this month.....times 30 days..........(or close to it)

I pay 14.5. Mine is read around the third. April to May was 140,May to June was 214. I expect the July reading to be higher. Did you hear about the woman in Detroit? They put her in a new meter and her first bill was 16,000 bucks? They news said they were putting a lien on her home.

I use Direct Energy and I get a rebate each November which just about pays the bill that month. That helps. I don't know if they switched your meter or not,but mine is read electronically. If your meter has numbers on it instead of the little clock type hands,so is yours.

I already live with the thermostat at 80. I use fans to keep air moving in the room I am in and turn them off if I go to another room. I only get hot if I am up doing something like vacuming. I use TXU and have a Summer Savings Plan where I get a 10% discount during the summer months and a 1% discount the rest of the year.

bilmorgbc, that was a water meter that was replaced, not electric.

I've been fighting TXU for 10 months. We have a 3,500 sf home 6 years old home, radiant barrier, solar screens, less than 3 yr old energy efficient new AC and hot water heater, had TXU out to do the energy efficiency seal up of home. Get this... I do not use a cloths dryer or dishwasher, We turned our AC off back in May and are using window AC's. This has helped get our consumption down to 4000 kWh a mo. Only 2 live in home. No one can tell us what is using all this electricity. We even unplug computers at night. How much more primitive can we live. Changed to reliant. Just got our new bill, 3,020 at 19 kwh for 3 weeks. Times that out and see what we owe for living with no AC, dryer or dishwasher.

I think I know the difference between a water meter and an electric meter. My electric meter,on the side of my house, was switched to a digital, which is read by remote and it does not require anyone to come to my home to do it. My water meter is in the ground at the back of my lot and a guy comes around on or about the tenth each month to read it.

I am positive you know the difference, the story was about the woman's water meter being changed, not her electric meter.

Then I heard the report wrong,I thought they said electric meter. I caught the end of the report and I would swear the guy on FOX said electric bill. Maybe it was a slip by him.

I researched the story and found it. The meter is read by radio frequency and is 'said to be more accurate'. Before, the residents were billed from estimates. No warning was given to customers.

good golly northtx...i'd burn up. during the day the a/c is on 73 or so...at night its on 70. the highest bill i've had in the past 3 yrs has bee 250.00. we did put new windows in a few months ago..but i think for the temp we keep it at our trees are probably a huge help. my sister brings a sweater when she comes to visit us..lol

bil, that is so odd about your bill. i just pulled my reliant bill and it said i used 1720 for a 33 day period...shamefully i'm bad at leaving lights on, 2 fans running...the a/c low, a pool pumps runs constantly..2 fridges..a freeze...etc. dont guess it's possible to have an electric leak..is it?

I live a home that is less than 700sqft. My electric bill averages $250/month. I don't have a water bill, have a well that runs on electricity. So, if I have a water leak, my electric bill skyrockets! Think I pay way too much for my small home!
