When will people learn that you cannot get to your destination faster by running red lights & stop signs, speeding through school zones & ignoring railroad crossing gates?
This morning a father ran a red light which resulted in a horrible collision which sent both him & his little boy to the hospital. The child was care-flighted to Children's Medical Center. So, because the dad wanted to shave a few seconds off his drive time, neither one will ever get to their destination. Was this dad even paying attention to the road? His hurry might cost his child his life. Wow, what a price to pay to be first or beat the light.
The other day, in a school zone, a man fled from police when they tried to pull him over for speeding. He led police on a chase & when they finally caught him, they asked why he ran. He answered because he was late for work. Well, now he'll never even get to work & he's now charged with a felony.
I would like to say the word that goes with the phrase Dumb A**, but this is a family site & I'm sure the rest of you know what I mean.
Isn't it a driver's responsibility to drive safely, which includes being aware of who's around us? Shouldn't we be aware & alert for road rules, etc? And, just because it's not our child going to that school, it's still somebody's else's child & don't we have an obligation to do our part to let others arrive at their destinations in one piece? That dad this morning had no right to put his son in that kind of danger. The little boy didn't make his dad run the red light. That father had an obligation to drive as safely as possible. Yesterday, near my daughter's junior high school, a man sped through the school zone while he talked on his cell phone. Then he stopped in the middle of the road, I guess to finish his conversation. Wow.
When will they ever learn? If you're in that kind of hurry, learn time management & leave earlier.

Common sense
What is the world coming too when these so call want a be truck driver’s that go out and forget to set the parking brake. The driver hardly spoke little English.
If these companies go out and just hire anyone out there just to cut corners in paying wages to the drivers then they’re going to get what they pay for, but it is going to cost them. You know like lawsuits, fines, violations cost, damages, and the time spent on behalf of the taxpayer’s expense.
Just cause the driver didn’t set the parking brakes. You know I drove for the government for ten years and I never in my life forget to set and lock the brakes when you park a 5-ton, 10-ton tractor-trailer semi. I guess the guy though that lunch at McDonald’s was more important than the public’s safety.
What I like to see is that since there are some of those that care less for public safety. They think more of their paycheck. Then they don’t need to be driving a big truck. These companies that go out and hire all this cheap labor have better wake up.
It maybe that these companies have all that money to pay all these fines, law suits, and damages, but they don’t want to share the wealth with the hire hands. Huh-right!!!!!!!!!

The Labor Day holiday is fast approaching and with is comes a welcome change for folks in Collin and Denton County.....and "change" is the key word in more ways than one! Starting Sunday, the new section of the 121 Tollway will be available from Hillcrest to the east all the way over through The Colony to the existing 121 Tollway that extends into Lewisville. It's been a long time coming and now the question is this? Will you pay to use the new concrete?

You heard of dodge ball in high school? Well be prepared, because it has been a year since we heard some of the gas companies say they would assist the state, city, and county in repairing the roads where there trucks and tractor trailers frequent, and long with some other local industrial companies.
But really, dodge rocks and debris is a more accurate term I think that we can come up with in these matters. I have heard of food for oil and gas program out in the deserts of Iraq and other places in the Middle East. But sidewalks and pedestrian signs for gas is becoming a real burn. Not that I wasn't already upset from hearing from their company at the wee hours of the night knocking and asking to make them a lease proposal to drill or lease mineral rights from our local residents.
Here are some other hazards besides the loss of sleep we have dealt within our area.
Warning Some of the pictures may be graphic in nature to pedestrians and school students alike, as evidence of the hazards they endure on the way home from school.

Debris falling off automobiles and tractor trailers.

Projectiles commonly found 5 1/2 feet from the road, in the form of rocks.

This one was 9 feet from the roads edge.

5 foot 11 inches from the roads edge.
My opinion is if you want to talk the talk on the assembly you ought to walk the walk.

It happens about a half dozen times a year and each time it befuddles me how it could happen. Here's a newswriter snippit of the latest incident this afternoon:
A DART TRAIN HIT A CAR DURING THE NOON RUSH IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS.
IT HAPPENED NEAR THE FOX 4 STUDIOS AT NORTH GRIFFIN STREET AND PACIFIC AVENUE.
WITNESSES SAY THE TRAIN WAS GOING NORTH AND THE CAR MADE A WIDE RIGHT TURN INTO THE TRAIN.
THE DRIVER OF THE CAR GOT OUT O-K.
HE DID NOT WANT TO TALK.... BUT A PASSENGER ON THE TRAIN DESCRIBED THE EXPERIENCE AS NERVE-WRACKING.
I bet he did. This goes without saying but please PLEASE never try to beat a train!

Construction crews assigned to building the extension of Woodall Rodgers over to I-30 can't buy a break. The project is way behind schedule (no fault of theirs) and to make matters worse, a "must have" part of the Trinity River project might be delayed as well. If you missed it on Good Day this morning, here's the rest of the story:
AN ITALIAN COMPANY IS BEHIND SCHEDULE... DELIVERING STEEL FOR THE "MARGARET HUNT HILL BRIDGE."
THE BRIDGE IS ONE OF THE MOST VISIBLE PARTS OF THE PLANS FOR THE TRINITY.
THE DELAY WILL PUT THE BRIDGE ABOUT A YEAR BEHIND ITS SCHEDULED COMPLETION DATE ... OF MID 2010.
So what do you think? Will these bridges ever be built?

For everyone that is except you kiddos in Denton County. Enjoy your last day of summer while you can! For the adults out there please remember that 20 MPH means 20 MPH!!! There will be a higher number of officers out and about today and throughout this first week of school in those zones just to make sure drivers remember. To the scholars: Have a great school year and remember "study study books are your buddy!"
**an addendum - some lug nut was arrested in The Colony for going over 50 in a 20. Now that's rediculous!!!

....unless you have tickets to the Cowboys/Texans game tonight. As of 4:15 pm, traffic is already heavy on 183 coming out of Dallas. Also make this note if you have Ranger tickets this weekend and you live west of the stadium: I-30 eastbound will be down to one lane starting tonight through the weekend as the "three bridges" project continues to take shape. Have a great weekend!

Just in case you missed it this morning on Good Day, construction starts today on the last leg of the George Bush Turnpike. When finished, the road will link I-30 up to its current termination point around the Firewheel Town Center. I know what you're thinking. How long will it take to complete the task? As far as road projects are concerned...not too bad. The new part of the GBT should be open in 2011.

On Sunday Aug. 17th, 2008 at approximately 4:45 I was involved in a fender bender in front of Enriques Cafe at 9208 RL Thornton Freeway (I30), Dallas, TX 75228 in the Staples Shopping Center next to Wal-Mart. As I exited the vehicle the other driver stated she did not see me, that she was in a hurry to pick up her grandmother. Then she acted as if she was dialing 911 and stated that they advised her we need to go to a police substation to file a report. I moved my vehicle out of the way of traffic and proceeded to exchange information with the other drive. She gladly wrote down her name, drivers license number and expiration date for me but never showed me her license stating the one she had on her was expired. She stated her insurance card was in her vehicle. As i asked her for her insurance information she stated she needed to go pick up her mom and that she was going to a police station to file a report. I advised her that she can do whatever she wants after we exchange insurance information. She then instructed her son to take the vehicle and leave the scene in order to go pick up her elderly mother. It was at this point i figured something was fishy, so I dialed 911, gave them the plate numbers to the vehicle, advised them what had happened and where I was and was told an officer would be dispatched. After several phone calls to 911 regarding the ridiculous and unacceptable response time two officers finally arrived an hour later. One white officer and one black officer. When the officers arrived and got an observation of the area the the white male officer instructed the black female officer that he was able to handle it and that she may leave. The black female officer chose to remain at the scene (it is my opinion that she remained because the other driver and her passengers were black). At this time I had already decided I would file a complaint due to the unacceptable 911 response time, so I made note of the white officers name on his name tag and his badge number. As I asked the black officer for her name, as she was not wearing a name badge, she rudely advised me that I can get that from the report. The white officer then proceed to question the other driver as to when she bought her vehicle and she advised him she bought it in 2001. He advised her the handicap plates on her vehicle have been expired since 2005. The black officer then whispered something to him and he advised her that he ran the plates before getting to the scene. So at this point the other driver has no drivers license, no proof of insurance, and expired tags. It would seem to me she is driving this vehicle illegaly and had she not been on the road then there may not have been an accident. However, moving forward, the white officer proceed to get my side of the story, then got her side of the story. The two officers then moved away to consult with each other and the black officer did most of the talking as the white officer listened. Then they approached us and said we have two options. We can either work it out amongst ourselves without filing a report. Or we can move forward with filing a report. I advised the office I have been hit by uninsured drivers before and always ended up getting screwed, therefore I would like the report filed. I advised him there has to be some kind of consequences for uninsured drivers, to which he stated she would receive a couple of citations. I asked him if the driver doesn't have proof of financial responsibility (insurance) isn't it a state law that the car gets towed and impounded until proof of insurance can be provided. He advised it's really at the officers discretion to have the vehicle towed or not. So I received my report number and was on my way feeling as if I had been a victim of injustice throughout this whole ordeal. So hopefully someone can help me hear and answer a few questions.
1. Is it not a law that the car gets towed and impounded for failure to provide proof of insurance?
2. Since this driver is uninsured, if judgement is found against me when i report it to my insurance company, can I demand they not pay the claim, since the other driver was operating the vehicle illegaly?
3. If 911 was called and officers dispatched, at that point wouldn't it be mandatory for them to file a report?
4.Was I a victim of racial discrimination? As I am a hispanic male, and the black officer stayed at the scene after she was told she can leave, then proceeded to apparently control the whole situation and tried to talk me out of filing a report as she kept saying most likely 99.9% I would be found to be at fault and my insurance rates would rise.
5. Who can I contact to file an offical complaint regardint 911 response times and the car not getting towed by the officers?
If anyone would care to help me out here the report number is 255100V

An aggressive announcement regarding the widening of I-35E. If all goes well in the planning stage (which by the way will include toll roads), the main cooridor between Dallas and Denton County will be widened by 50%!! Unfortunately, the term "aggressive" has a different meaning to TxDot. Roadwork would begin in two years and the estimated finish date wouldn't be until 2017.

A wreck yesterday morning involving two big rigs along I-20 just past FM 47 is still taking its toll on folks that take I-20 eastbound on a daily basis. The freeway will continue to be closed at exit 519 due to the bridge damage and engineers are still assessing the structural damage done to the overpass. Best case scenario? An emergency contracting crew will be able to fix the support in a week or two....but if the dammage is more significant....well.....suffices to sayu it could be a LOOOOOOONG time before all is normal again. For now, consider taking Highway 80 as an alternate route.
