The senate passed Bush's proposed Merida Initiative June 26. For those that are unfamiliar with the M.I., it is an anti-drug assistance deal with Mexico. In short, we give them money and their corrupt government officials, military, and cops will stop the drug trade. Yeah right, I see that happening. The U.S. will give Mexico $400 million and other Central American nations will receive $65 million. The story can be read here.

And by the way, we will give them this money with no stipulations.

Why would anyone think this is a good idea? I think we've been scammed!

I think there is a better word for it than "scammed"

Just can't use it on here

I agree. When Mexico uses their nationalized oil company as two-thirds of their government revenue, I wonder just what our $400 Million is doing there? Remember, Mexico expropriated their oil industry - which was created by American and Dutch companies, none of which were fairly compensated after the "revolution" by "the people" (actually by competing labor and political interests).

Why give Mexico money? I can't figure it out...

In order for this to benefit the US, the Mexican government must uphold their end of the bargain by using the money for the purposes described in the agreement. I have the feeling that this just ain't going to happen. Bye-bye tax money.

And remember, Obama wants to "expropriate" our oil industry as well. That is part and parcel of his socialist agenda. Frankly, I am not sure that he wouldn't simply sign off Texas to pay Mexico to hush up.

I am against the money spent there. Drugs continue to pour through our borders like water through a seive.

As usual, our government giving away our hard-earned money to a purpose that doesn't have to "prove up". I guess we shouldn't be surprised, if illegal aliens can get credit without even proof of identity or ability to pay from Bank of America (misnomer if I ever heard one!), why shouldn't we give the country that sends the most illegals to our country money for stopping the drug trade? I mean they've already made great strides to helping their citizens overcome poverty. Oh, wait, that was US helping them by giving them all jobs & social services...never mind!
