Billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens has a plan to help us reduce our dependency on foreign oil. And he is betting his own money that this plan will be a success. I, for one, say thank you Mr. Pickens. It seems our elected officials and entrepreneurs have drug their feet long enough.

As much as I've respected Pickens, this is NO plan. Are we put windmills on are cars? We need gaoline, not windmills. And those who know the business, say you MUST have backup fuels for them... gas or oil!

If we needed water, would we be told to grow carrots?
If we needed electric generators, would we be told we can't 'electrify' our way out of the problem?

Simply & wisely, we need gasoline. DRILL IT. BUILD REFINERY'S. It's the elephant in the room.

I see you didn't watch his video. And Mr. Pickens does "know the business".

Going "green" has already increased costs on just about everything, as this will too. Yes I agree that we must find alternate fuels to run our daily lives, but the cost for you and I will sky rocket like you wouldn't believe for wind energy. We still need oil, we still need natural gas, we still need nuclear powered electricty, just to help offset new alternative fuel and energy initiatives. We need to continue focusing on how to get more oil, natural gas and coal out of the ground, WHILE we also have the directive of a massive alternate fuels and energy project. We cannot skimp on one just to get the other. Yet that seems to be the thinking.

Brazil is an excellent example, they have large ample supply of alternate fuels and energy and a large supply and reserve of crude oil. And in fact they are initiating another alt fuel strategy chasing soybeans. And here we lag because we have a Congress that cannot project into the future, only today and tomorrow.

haven't you learned by now cb, char doesn't need to read or watch or attempt to educate herself using any new information, she is already "informed".

It's quite arrogant to think we know more about this subject than T. Boone Pickens. But then again, perhaps some think he is just too old to make sound decisions.

Pickens has sunk a truckload of money into wind power, what do you expect him to say???? Class 101 Cubfan, use you’re one cell you have left in you’re brain.
Natural Gas cars are a piece of junk. If you will remember Dallas was using them for a while and stopped because it was costing more money to maintain them than they were worth.
The reason we import 70% of our oil is because congress has tied the oil company’s up with regulations and wont let them drill where the oil is at in the US and offshore.
They is nothing wrong with wind power, as long as the government and us are not having to pay for it up front. Texas has already passed some bills to start up a wing power program, but it’s going to cost you 2 to 10 dollars more on your electric and gas bills to get it going. Once again the American people are stuck paying for wind power.
What we need is oil, coal, natural gas, wind power, bio fuel and anything else we can think of. But first we need oil, drill drill drill and kick them left wing idiots out of office who are holding it up.

I still like the idea of bio fuel made from sugar grass whatever plant..
Seems to work well in Brazil, and they drive the same kind of cars we do

T Boone doesn't need to make more money . He can buy and sell all of us with his pocket change. No, we can't run cars on windmills, we can run them on electricity. I think he is very very smart and far seeing on this. However, I am surprised no one has called him a socialist or communist yet. Some people here seem to associate anyone who wants to conserve or try alternative energy is a subversive. I guess T.Boone is to well a known a capitalist for that label.

The big push away from being dependent on foreign oil needs to be a combination of different alternatives NOW !

Not wait till we've completely gone under !

Drill like there's no tomorrow. If the lame brains in Washington don't come together, there may not be one !

Nuclear is the way to power the cities and factories, but it takes time to show people that it's safe and successful. One small accident, and people are afraid to have one near them. If they had that illusion years ago, we'd all have been walking after the first person died in a car wreck !

Our leaders need to come together and lead for a while, do nothing gets nothing done !

Note I am building my own windmill. I expect my electric bill to drop to next to nothing and might even make money on the deal

If you get low on wind, Momcat -

call Al Gore

he can supply all you ever need !

Pickens is a little optimistic in his projections of 20% of power coming from wind generators. We simply don't have the battery technology to store energy and wind generation is subject to the weather, making it unpredictable as well as inconsistent. In articles I have read, peak generation for wind turbines is morning and evening, but peak load on the system is mid afternoon. The sustainability of the machinery is just about a 15 year span. Plus, these costs have not even begun to deal with what will be huge opposition by animal rights groups to placing these turbines along major wildlife immigration routes. If we really wanted to harness power, hydroelectric generation is much more cost effective, long lived and consistent. Plus we already know how to do it. I wish I could believe that Pickens isn't looking for a federal handout, but that's what it looks like to me.

the only thing I see wrong with this plan,it is basically stop gap, in another 10 years our demand for oil will go up probably 30%, so it stileaves 8% short of where we are now with out drilling for more oil, so we are still in a negative, so, it isn't necessarily all that rosey, without the drilling !

Well, wind power will work but guess what -no one has figured out HOW to harness it yet. Aside from powering the things they do now, this hasn't been proven cost effective yet.

It will in time, but at minimum we are 10 years out. Pickens is on it like a rat is on cheese, but I seriously doubt we'll see any change in his lifetime.

The power of the wind at its best.

the thing with windpower, is it doesn't depend on batteries, it goes directly in to existing power transmission lines, so they can cut down other methods of producing power, so all they actually do is produce not store .

I moved here from Washington State, which has aboutthe cheapest method of electri power there is , Hydroeletric, , which is 4 to 5 cents a kw, than here , but they have put up numerous wind farms there, just so they can ciphon off more of the hydroeletric power to send to California , which will eventually raise the price in Washington aas the cost of producing wind power is more expensive , and the power companies there are forced to buy these wind farms and add them to the local power whether they want to or not !
