Well the economy is not just effecting us humans, its also effecting our 'best friends'. Thats right, our pets. I spoke with Jeff O. at the Rowlett Animal Shelter on Friday. He stated that the number of pets being turned in was higher month over month compared to last year. People loosing jobs, high price of gas, it looks like people are having to choose between feeding their pets and feeding their families.

I ended up going to petco on Saturday and almost had a heart attack. I buy Neutro pet food for my 2 German Shepherds. One 40lb bag usually runs about $29-$34 depending if it is on sale. I went to check out, $41.00! I was asking about it, and it was related to the diesel gas prices. I decided now would be a good time to maybe switch brands to something a little less expensive. I went to WalMart where a 40lb bag of IAMS was over $30.00!

Guess the bulky heavy items are soaring in prices, starting with Pet Food.

If you will read the ingredients you will find that OROY is exactly the same as IAMS at half the price. The families Pitt Bulls are doing great on it.

And the reason... our government, who is so foolish as to propagate CORN for car fuel! Everything has gone up because of this ridiculous idea! And Dems think government is the answer to problems when in fact, it's the cause of most problems!!

Too bad. But America has spoiled their animals/pets. In foreign countries I have visited, the animals live off food scraps, eat rice, etc.

Madison Avenue has sold us a package. Granted, it's a healthy one, but not necessarily a needed one when one considers how much "human" food is tossed on a daily basis.

I agree, bil. We waste so much food! When I am overseas and see people standing in line for an hour or more just to eat, I am more mindful of what I put on my plate. The animals always get the scraps.

With six cats & two dogs, I may start eating the pet food (after ensuring it didn't come from China!) With the costs of everything rising, we'll have to give up smoking, driving and, eating. Has anyone noticed if booze is going up too? Not sure if I can give that up. As a kid, my brother & I used to eat the dry dog food on Grandma's front porch. We had strong teeth & shiny coats!! I wonder what brand it was, I may have to find it again!

I shop around for reputable brands. Target has some of the lowest prices on name brands-much lower than the grocery stores or the pet stores. I generally buy Iams for my dog. I buy pure seeds for the bird, hay and grain for the rabbit and chinchilla and catch fish in the creek for the turtle. One thing, I do look for sales on pet foods and donate them to shelters and rescue groups. They will take unopened packages, so if you have a pet that doesn't like or can't eat a packet or canned food, consider donating. I think food banks are also soliciting pet food for the seniors and such who use their programs.

PS. How much do you bet that some folks dump their loving pets before they give up cigarettes and beer? I'm just saying....

I use Purina. I think a medium size bag is 10.00 and the larger bag is 20.00. Since we live in the country we see animals put out, just this weekend there were 3 puppies looked to be about 10 weeks old in the middle of the T at the end of the road. They expect us to take care of them but country people already have their animals, so what can we do, we have no animal shelter. My husband said he would like to catch the idiots take them to the desert and say sorry you were born but society can't take care of you, hope you make it.

I have been feeding my critters Ole Roy, for years, they are fat happy and healthy.
I also give my dogs and cat, shots and wormer from the feed store. The only shot, I don't give, is the rabies, since the state changed the law and the vet has to give it.
The vet also does the nutering/and or spaying.

On a side note, I had heard that Ole Roy is not much more than pure fat, and not much nutrition. (I have never investigated this). But I am certainly going to look at mixing some less expensive foods w/ good foods to try and lessen the cost.

Not much to tell. I like taking photos, and messing around on the computer, and looking after my two GSDs. I do have a full AKC GSD Male that is 3 1/2 years old, anyone need a dog to stud their GSD?
