Hey everybody any ideas about this....

I heard on the news now that they are trying to change the law for drinking beer from age 21 through 18. I think thats a good idea b/c when ur age 18 you can get married, vote, play the lottery and so forth... Here's my idea if they changed that law why can't they change the law on the casino's and let them gamble @ age 18??? Thats my idea...if they are going to do that they ought of change all the laws then...

Changing the laws will not change a thing. If they wanna drink they will drink. The laws never made a difference before so why should it now. As far as gambling?? An 18 yr old probably dont make enough money to gamble much anyway so why bother changing it either. Or shouldn't be gambling it all away, its still an addiction too.

It's probably more fun illegal anyways...... The colleges would like to have it legalized to take the liability off of them....... Then everybody on campus would be of legal drinking age and would be far less of a legal issue for them

My husband went to school in NJ. Back in the 70's drinking age was already 18 there. He would sign himself out at lunch and head to the bar to grab a sandwich and a beer!

At age 18 you are a legal adult anyway. As I always say, if you are old enough to die for your country, you are old enough to drink...legally

Sorry, but as someone who is in recovery but was blessed with Liver Disease, I am totally against it. Dysphoria, I said the same thing at your age but we have enough kids dieing on the roads now that have alcohol in them illegally. Peace

Stupid! Rediculious! No way is that even close to being a smart idea. Add inexperience on the the roads AND alcohol. yep someone deserves a smack in the back of the head for thinking that was smart. Can we say DuMBA$$?

Heck, with that thinking how about age 12 or 13 since that's when kids sometimes start having kids?

No, age 21 is fine. We have enough underage drinking and those that are of age - act ignorant.

I think we need more alcohol awareness for high schoolers - have them show up to a real (not staged) DUI crash with fatalities. Let's see their tears rolling down their face - this would change drinking for them all together.

Until society truly knows what alcohol does to their bodies, 21 year olds and up should not be drinking.

I get tired of reading in the paper all the dui convictions and repeat offenders. A survey would reveal that most dui offenders started drinking before the age of 21.

Yes, we as society need to place stricter laws on underage drinking. Someone in another blog mentioned a $1,000 fine ... yes indeed because Mommy will be paying that fine ... will she be happy then?

For people that are in the military and live on the base I THINK THATS FINE. They are in a controlled area. For the average 18yr old!! HECK NO. Kids today are less mature than any time in the history of our great nation. They don't work, and even if they do they have poor work ethics. They have no manners, if they wind up going to a bar, they will wind up with problems not to mention the jail situation the DUI problems. Just because they can go to jail at 18 does not mean we, as adults should give them the means to get there.

Okay lets lower the drinking age to 18 and while we are at it make it a lot harder and a lot more expensive to have a drivers license! I am serious. I agree you are allowed to die for your country, get married and vote so why not be able to drink if you so choose to do. I do not believe that 18 year olds as a whole are responsible enough not to drive after drinking though, so if we make it more difficult to get a drivers license then that may help lower the rate of teenage drunken accidents. Then again with all these kids out there that think that they have to prove to all their thug friends that they are "above" the law and they are untouchable it really doesn't matter if we leave things as they are.

I think if a kid is 18 and in the military he should be allowed to drink, on base. Not off base on base only. But those are the only 18yr olds I feel should be allowed they are serving our country. Exceptions should be made in this regard.

Here we go again with being 18 and being in the Armed Forces, Right to Vote, Right to Drink.
I grew up when the drinking age here was lowered to 18. Although I'm not a drinker and don't do it for social or sport. I found that those who did drink at 18, did at times do it in excess. Thus, the more Holyer and Thou groups in our state mainly Republicans. Pushed for it's repeal to 21. Stating driving safety, less crime, better schools.
What a joke...
Kids still drink at 18 or before, still now today, many still have drunk driving problems, and teaching responablity as to drinking in our society is still not being done.
I'm in favor of MAD, yet we see interest in this group dwindling around the area.
I know I should not say this, but it seems to me to be more the norm around here than the exception, People in St Louis are just plain STUPID...!
They tend to lack any type of commonsense at all.
Drinking at 18 is not the problem. Being responable is.
We, the people in this state are to blame when it comes to teaching our children the Do's and Don'ts, to drinking in our society. Along with teaching them resopnablity.
We must remember, for every action (mistake) their are equal and oppsite actions. Being responable to handle them is just part of being an Adult.
I see too many people in this area not that grown up to handle there actions now days.

I remember when Illinois had a 19 year old drinking age (for beer and wine only). I was in that 19 to 21 age at that time and thought it was great also. I also remember when you had to be 21 to vote. Both were changed because of the logic (during the Vietnam war) that if you're old enough to die for your country, you should be old enough to (fill in the blank). Now that I've had a chance to mature a little, I can now see that 18 year olds (myself included) are not really mature enough for things like drinking.

I'm 34 and I don't see the problem with it. 18 year olds are going to drink anyway, may as well make it legal instead of having the "minor in possession' stuff when you're 18, and waste courts time. Some adults at age 55 aren't responsible enough to drink so saying 18 year olds aren't responsible isn't an argument. And yes if you are old enough to go to another country and defend our freedom and put your life on the line you're definitely old enough to have a drink at the end of the day and be thankful you're still alive.

littlebow2000, “Drinking at 18 is not the problem. Being responsible is.”

YOU HAVE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! We need to put some teeth back into the laws (not create new laws) so that people/kids will think twice before making the wrong decisions in life!

While I have thought that those in the military should be able to have a beer (not hard alcohol) before they are 21, I stopped drinking while I was in. It was my choice not the military. I think a clear head in a bad situation is better than a foggy one.

Now before someone asks, yes I did drink while in HS but I never drank more than one or two beers. I never drank just to fit in as most kids do today.

Pugman - if the law said I would go to jail for life and I was 18 and wanted to drink, I still would. Consequences are needed of course, but they do not PREVENT anything. They punish after the fact. If you dont want your kids to drink, be an example and talk to them. I did not let my son drink till he was 21 at home or anywhere and when he saw me have a drink or so, he saw a person who stuck to a strick max amount and kept her head and control. He does the same and feels no need to drink to excess like his friends.
