cyrusmartin's Blog

The majority of political discussion on these blogs revolves around the Presidential election. This time around, a lot of interest has been generated and there are considerably more of us talking about the candidates.

This should be a good thing... however...

There does seem to be a negative focus to most of the blog entries regarding the election. This is to be expected. It is politics after all... but driving up the opposing candidate's negatives does not get votes FOR the other candidate.

What do I mean by this?

Lets imagine our candidates are Bob and Bill.

Well if I tell you not to vote for Bob because he is bad and nasty and evil then how is this going to translate to a positive for Bill?

You would have to believe that Bill is not all of those things you accuse Bob of being.
Naturally, a lack of these negatives would be perceived as desirable however the lack of these negatives does not necessarily indicate that Bill has any positives.

Part 1 of your strategy has been to discuss the negatives of Bob but you must also discuss the positives of Bill.

In fact, it would probably be a good idea to discuss more of Bill's positives than Bob's negatives lest you appear to be covering up for a lack of positives in Bill and instead opting to exaggerate Bob's negatives.

If the group of people discussing Bob's negatives outweighs the group discussing Bill's positives then this could result in a backlash from the group still trying decide between the two.

This can be amplified if the group discussing Bob's positives greatly outnumbers the group discussing Bill's negatives.

Balance is key if the pro Bill group is interested in promoting their views.

Now there is another factor that could prove problematic...
If the pro Bill group has difficulty discerning or articulating positives for Bill then this may come across as an unintended anti Bill factor.

Please be mindful of how you choose to promote your ideas and attempt to diminish those of opposing bloggers. None of us want to do more harm than good in an attempt to promote a candidate.

Thanks
-Cy

Cy,

Nice try to "Spin" Bob's (Oboma's) negatives into positives.

I am an Independent that See's the Media and a cult following trying to force someone on me that doesn't foster the values I desire in a President. Basically my opinion is McCain is the lesser of the evils.

That is pretty much everyone's view Kestrel. This entire election will be an acceptance or a rejection of Obama, not a commentary whatsoever on McCain. Conservatives don't like McCain, but they dislike Obama even more.

How did I spin anything?
I didnt even mention 1 specific about either candidate.

Also, I am saddened that you feel that people are forcing Obama upon you. Since Texas will certainly be a red state in the general election I am a little confused as to how anyone could force him on anybody here.

Just because CNN or Reuters or USA Today or whoever does not openly mock and bash Obama this does not seem to be to be evidence of a "cult" like following.

You have your opinions though and I respect that. I just wish you had some substantial reason for them that we could discuss in a reasonable way without the pet names, doctored pictures and petty insults.

We dont see that done to McCain after all.

...but whatever.

Whatever Cy - they are always calling McCain old, married to a sugar mama, etc. Don't act like your side is the moral superior!

I realize the Dems , would like us all to concentrate stritly on issues but how do ya rule out the unknown issues, and since when is a candidates background not part of the issues, and their values and their past associations , so in actuality, a candidates person life and associations are just as important, as the economy, and the war , and He consistantly has compaigned on His judgment, abd it seems His judgment on people he associates with , is questionable at best !!

Cy, give me a brake.

What's forced on me is the nonsense Hype and "Dog and Pony Show" by the Obama campaign assisted by Liberal bias Media.
The media omits or fails to examine statements from Obama, such as the forming a civilian security force stronger than the military.

The photos speak for themselves, as Wolf Blitzer says "A Picture is worth a thousand words".

I am in no way morally superior to anyone.
People have called McCain old and focusing on his age as some sort of disqualification is wrong. I would not justify it or condone that kind of politics.

It is also not an excuse to do as you please against Obama.

Dak, I agree that we should discuss issues...even discuss what issues you feel are unclear or "unknown" as you say.
Again, I dont see how calling someone names and such accomplishes this.

We can ALL do better.

I am not better... but everyone should really quit pretending that the onslaught of hateful images, pet names, exaggerations, and inuendo against Obama is somehow justified.

It is not justified against either candidate and if you think otherwise then I feel bad for you.

If it makes you feel any better though, a lot of people use "freedom of speech" as an argument to explain their childishness. You should try that in the absence of actual reason.

Another great post Cy! It should be no surprise to you that a majority of the mindless bloggers in here are going to be against Obama, this is after all a Fox blog. I agree with you that it would be nice to have an adult conversation with people that are for McCain whatever their reasons, but it's not likely to happen in here. You know the famous saying "ignorance is bliss", well most of these people must be happy as pigs in s**t! Although I have to admit they more often come across as quite angry and unhappy- pretty sad!

Here's to hoping Texas turns Blue in November, now that would be something to talk about.

I refuse to accept the hubris nature of Obama and his cult followers. I will expose him and them at every turn with his own actions and words.

Well I'm sure I have some opinions that dont make sense as well. I know I get pissed off really easily when I go to a movie theater for example. I just will never understand why popcorn was the choice for theaters... know what I mean?

I know... I know... everyone loves popcorn at the movies. I am probably wrong on this... but it is still annoying to me.

...so I sympathize.

Wow...exposing them all? That's a full-time job there!

I fall right in the middle, usually. I just hate "you all suck because you like him" instead of "here's why my guy rocks!", just as Cy was discussing.

McCain? Too old, and the idea of having a president who won't address the fact that he has PTSD and still displays the symptoms within his office environment perturbs me. It renders him unstable. He's also anti-choice, even regarding birth control, and is anti-stem cell.

Obama? Too general in answers, too gung-BLEEP about raising taxes (in addition to making sure the Bush rollback doesn't stay rolled back) and isn't very quick on the draw in discussions.

Gratefully, neither one is as Green as Gore or as clueless about geography or world issues as Bush was when he quizzed before taking office the first time.

How come we have to take tests to defend the country (including the FBI, ICE, Homeland Security and the Armed Forces, even though the tests are all different), but not to lead it? That has always worried me.

Once again you idiot I told you in another post the reason people should vote for McCain over Obama. Now I know what I told you was all true, but you being a leftist liberal you didn’t like the truth and now you want to post this trash trying to explain why Obama should be elected.
Now if we just want to compare evil against evil again McCain wins over Obama hands down. McCain wins over Obama when it comes to experience, McCain wins when it comes to protecting this country etc etc. How stupid can you really be? I sure you will tell me with you’re answer.

How stupid can I really be?

Hmmm... Well it is a good question. It's been asked before. The problem is that I'm too dumb to figure it out.

=P

You need to calm down and relax. There is no reason for you to come after me like this for suggesting that people try talking about positives instead of negatives.

I have to thank you though for helping me make my point. I'm not sure how your behavior lends any credibility to your argument.

I do appreciate your response though.

Again, you hit the home run with this one buddy. I can see right wingers coming out of their respective holes and trying to vomit their venom again.
Only advice to you: Bring a little edge. Be mean if you have to.

For once I have to agree with cool, evil vs evil McCain wins hands down. He is by far the most experienced at being evil, so where that is concerned I do have to agree- McCain is by far the most evil of the two.

My name is Cyrus Martin. I live in Euless, Texas along with a bunch of other people. I enjoy a healthy debate now and then as well as a heated discussion. I don't enjoy to argue though and I find it absolutely beyond annoying to see people spread ignorance, hypocrisy, lies and distortions in the guise of truth or Christianity. I am a proud Christian (which is sort of an Oxymoron) and I love God very much. I think most Christians do... unfortunately there are many that will use his name to promote a twisted and evil agenda and guilt any who would seek God's face into following them without question. For too long we have been cowed by this tyrannical Christian terrorism. One of the purposes of my life to help bring this into the light. If we are Christians then we should think about what that means and the responsibility that comes along with that comfortable label. Thanks! I hope we will have some great talks. -Cy
