Wal-Mart mobilizes against Democrats: report

(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc is mobilizing U.S. store managers to lobby against Democrats in November's presidential election, fearing they will make it easier for workers to unionize, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if store workers unionize, the paper said.

About a dozen employees who attended meetings in seven states said executives stressed employees would have to pay hefty union dues and get nothing in return, and might have to go on strike without compensation, and warned that unionization could force the company to cut jobs as labor costs rise, the Journal reported.

The Wal-Mart human-resources managers who have run the meetings didn't tell those attending how to vote in the November elections, but made it clear that voting for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, would be tantamount to inviting unions in, the Journals said.

Wal-Mart could not be reached immediately for a comment.

Cy, Cy, Cy. This post is taken directly from the Obama website. And, of course, the intent is to portray Wal-Mart as being another example of how everyone is picking on poor Obama. Hint: When you find something on the Obama website that you would like to post, go to the source cited by the website and post directly from the source. By doing this, the credibility of your post will be enhanced.

Wal-Mart and other businesses are not mobilising against Senator Obama and Democrats, they are mobilising against proposed legislation known as the Employee Free Choice Act.

First introduced in 2003, the bill came to a vote last year and sailed through the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, but was blocked by a filibuster in the Senate and faced a veto threat by the White House. The bill was taken off the floor, and its backers pledged to reintroduce it when they could get more support (Wall Street Journal).

The November election could bring that extra support in Congress, as well as the White House if Sen. Obama is elected and Democrats extend their control in the Senate. Sen. Obama co-sponsored the legislation, which also is known as "card check," and has said several times he would sign it into law if elected president. Sen. John McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee, opposes the Employee Free Choice Act and voted against it last year (Wall Street Journal).

Under the proposed legislation, companies could no longer have the right to insist on one secret ballot. Instead, the Free Choice, or "card check," legislation would let unions form i

Instead, the Free Choice, or "card check," legislation would let unions form if more than 50% of workers simply sign a card saying they want to join. It is far easier for unions to get workers to sign cards because the organizers can approach workers repeatedly, over a period of weeks or months, until the union garners enough support.

The link I got the info from was on Yahoo. I posted it at the end of the message. Last time I checked, Yahoo was not Obama's web site. Maybe I missed that though and it is now. Heh.

Walmart corporate is being reported as telling employees to not vote democrat in November. This was even reported by the ***GASP*** Wal Street Journal.

I'm sure that source is not supposedly pro Obama though so maybe you will consider that information credible.

You wont... but I figured I should at least set the facts straight.

Thanks

Here are quotes from the news story posted on The Wall Street Journal's web site which is owned by Rupert Murdoch... who owns Fox News... so this is prolly not a "Liberal" pro-obama site.

First, here is the title of the story.
"Wal-Mart Warns of Democratic Win"

and then some quotes...

The Wal-Mart human-resources managers who run the meetings don't specifically tell attendees how to vote in November's election, but make it clear that voting for Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama would be tantamount to inviting unions in, according to Wal-Mart employees who attended gatherings in Maryland, Missouri and other states.

The meeting leader said, 'I am not telling you how to vote, but if the Democrats win, this bill will pass and you won't have a vote on whether you want a union,'" said a Wal-Mart customer-service supervisor from Missouri. "I am not a stupid person. They were telling me how to vote," she said.

Wal-Mart, like George Bush, is guilty until proven innocent, right, Cy?

I'd have loved to have heard this on tape. Other than that, it's all hearsay and a story to aide the most unworthy candidate to come down the presidential pike in our lifetimes...well, next to Carter.

She said he said. That's hearsay.

Once again, Cy, you have missed the point. Wal-Mart and other businesses are opposing the enactment of the Employee Free Choice Act, which the Democrats want to become law and Senator Obama has said he will sign if passed. I know that many people believe that the universe revolves around Senator Obama, but in reality, it does not. Regardless of who is elected as President, Wal-Mart and other businesses will still talk to their employees about the dangers of the Employee Free Choice Act. The statement "if the Democrats win, this bill will pass and you won't have a vote on whether you want a union" is correct. Under the proposed legislation, companies could no longer have the right to insist on one secret ballot. Don't you believe this bit of information is important for employees to know?

Ivy, Cy will defend Obama to the end. That's how it'll be when the real Antichrist arrives on the scene. People will be astounded by his looks, his demeanor, his abilities, and yet it will all be to their destruction. Sad that.

Cy, I forgot to tell you that thus far, Wal-Mart is not in violation of law by conducting the meetings.

Wal-Mart may be walking a fine legal line by holding meetings with its store department heads that link politics with a strong antiunion message. Federal election rules permit companies to advocate for specific political candidates to its executives, stockholders and salaried managers, but not to hourly employees. While store managers are on salary, department supervisors are hourly workers.

However, employers have fairly broad leeway to disseminate information about candidates' voting records and positions on issues, according to Jan Baran, a Washington attorney and expert on election law.

Even though this is not hearsay... as it was verified by multiple employees... I will not get into a debate about the definition of hear say.

Scotty, dont write me off like that. If Obama does something terrible then I will absolutely admit it and discuss it openly. We're just expressing our views here. That doesnt make me an automaton.

Also Ivyman, I am not accusing Wal-Mart of breaking any laws. I was just pointing out something they had been doing. Are we not allowed to know the politics of the places we patron?

"I know, Scotty, but for me it is a moral imperative that I try."

Its good that we have enough concern about one another to continue to try to communicate. I will also keep trying... though I am willing to accept that I'm probably not going to change any minds here. My main purpose is to try to persuade people to not be so childish and hateful here... but expression and learning are also good. regardless of our disagreements, I almost always enjoy the discussions. It's good to have a place to do that.

...and yes I do learn things here all the time. I am not just here to read my own posts.

I think its bad PR for Wal-Mart to be opposed to anything with the words "Free Choice" attatched to it but then again it does have a monopoly on consumer products and distribution and the Waltons and Wal-Mart Inc. have done quite well raking in billions every year by denying employees proper benefits and decent wages ...but I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?

It's funny how hard unions are pushing this view. Unions had their place in the bad old days of the Industrial revolution, but the current union demands have driven jobs overseas while driving up the cost of domestic goods. Why do you think there are so many things from China sold at popular prices? In short, unions and their high wages and compensation are resulting in massive early layoffs and retirements due to the downturn in car sales. And that is due to the high prices required to cover union compensations. If union moved into Walmart, it would be accompanied by higher prices across the board. Now tell me how that helps the middle class...

TTB, I disagree with your assessment of unions being to blame. Bad management is to blame the majority of the time.

And I'm curious, as a union railroad trainman, how much do you think I make per hour, and what do you think I should I be paid? While you are trying to figure a fair wage, please keep in mind that our CEO last year was compensated $3,741,667. And if he were to cash out all of his options, he would make approximately 38 million.

CY, why do we know to know the politics of places we spend money at? I know that Hollywood is totlaly leftist, but people still pour billions into it every year, but corps always play play both sides of the fence. I have worked for a company that is I guess if you tagged it would be republican, made no bones about it and they service and make gagets that you use each day of your life, that is if you drive a car, but basically its this, Unoins are outdated and serve no use in todays economy, great along time ago, but they usually will bring everything down with them...Thats all no unions

I promise, in some fields unions are still necessary. My union not only stands up for us, but the public also. They keep pressure on the railroad to operate safely.

My name is Cyrus Martin. I live in Euless, Texas along with a bunch of other people. I enjoy a healthy debate now and then as well as a heated discussion. I don't enjoy to argue though and I find it absolutely beyond annoying to see people spread ignorance, hypocrisy, lies and distortions in the guise of truth or Christianity. I am a proud Christian (which is sort of an Oxymoron) and I love God very much. I think most Christians do... unfortunately there are many that will use his name to promote a twisted and evil agenda and guilt any who would seek God's face into following them without question. For too long we have been cowed by this tyrannical Christian terrorism. One of the purposes of my life to help bring this into the light. If we are Christians then we should think about what that means and the responsibility that comes along with that comfortable label. Thanks! I hope we will have some great talks. -Cy
