My daughter is doing her student teaching in one of our metroplex middle schools...she comes home with some incredible stories...this is the latest and TEACHERS..I am in NO way blaming you!!!! The eighth grade students were asked to address a mailing to their home and this should have taken 5 minutes...twenty minutes later they had  barely finished...they either did not know their address...did not know what city they lived in nor did they know HOW to even address the envelope...These are thirteen and fourteen year olds...asking the teacher what city they lived in!!!! My daughter had to check these mailings and add stamps...again she was aghast....some of the addresses were in the postage area...I asked.."Have these kids never written a letter, a note or a thank you to a friend ...a relative or an organization that had gifted them?" She questioned this too but was told ....everyone emails now!!!! Have they never seen an addressed envelope???? The FWISD wants us to okay a bond issue in todays election and several thousand dollars are slated for cheer leading or pep squad uniforms...uhm don't think so...My daughter said it takes so much class time just to "settle" the kids that teaching time is greatly dimished...I admire anyone who dedicates their life to the career of teaching..BLESS THEM......what they have to contend with in the classroom and with so little discipline options.. I know I could not and would not want to do this...I think my daughter is  now questioning her career choice....At this time she is opting to go to grad school after graduation next month.

HONESTLY, One day I had my students address post cards to themselves for a contest over the holidays. Five of them had problems. It took one student four tries to get his right. Folks, I taught in a Trade School. They all had high scholl diplomas from DISD or GEDS. Most were in their twenties. It is not the teachers fault, it is the school boards fault. Social promotion is killing us.

First of all, any middle or high school has a student population that are living at addresses which aren't in the attendance zone. They are afraid of putting down the real address, because then they get kicked out. But they don't know which address their parents used. Frankly, all of our schools would be much better served if there were personnel paid to validate addresses. Secondly, kids cannot and will not read or write. Period. I am constantly amazed at the inability some students have to write even a short paragraph about anything. For all the bells and buzzers, our students were much more able to succeed before computers were in elementary classrooms. All the do with computers is the same things my mom did fifty years ago with flashcard. And they do not teach handwriting in the schools. Try reading some of their essays. It's illegible. And they seldom bother to spell things correctly. And this is in an affluent school with "concerned" parents.

TruBlu, most of them knew their address.
EXAMPLE: John

That is what I meant by not knowing how to address a postcard. And they had High School diplomas or GEDs. Most from DISD. You should have seen them trying to do simple math. Out of 30, maybe 2 could balance a checkbook. Again, its not the teachers fault. Its the parents and the school board.
