I was watching the news last night on a different channel...not 4.....there was a story about a Katrina family...3 adults who were griping about having to move ...They had been living FREE for 18 months in a beautiful house in Plano...now they had the option of purchasing the house with $15,000 from Fannie May  or moving on...the house was priced at $189,000..and they were complaing that it was too expensive and the price should be lowered for them..P...l...e...a...s...e.......they have had 18 months of living there FREE to  work and save  ...3 adults...they had an exotic bird (probably expensive) and the young adult had several musical instruments..I was appalled at their thinking and "b....." about this ..NO ONE ever gave me a house to live in free for 18 months and if they had I'd been working my tail off in that time to put away some money..I grew up "dirt" poor but I worked and saved and went to school....no handouts either...I had no sympathy for these people only contempt for their total lack of thankfulness...gimme...gimme..gimme!!!!! Think about it...when you total up the amount they didn't pay in rent  they were probably already given another $15,00-$18,000 ..I guess I'd be griping too if someone took my gravy train away

Give me a break.

People who take advantage of others make me SICK.

That's pitiful. Count about 1% of he cost of the home for the rent so that makes it 1900 a month X 18 = 34,200. and that is just principle, interest, tax and ins...no profit on the owners part.

I feel the same way you do Dawn. They have had plenty of time to get back on their feet.
I know a couple of people from New Orlean and they are working and supporting themselves.

I have also meet a few that still has nothing, by choice to me it seems, because one guy drinks and smokes all weekend and complain about how WE did not do enough in the beginning. I told him he was a full grown man and should be taking care of himself.
Yes, more could have been done, once they realized the extent of the damage, but that is not a free ticket for the next 10 years, or for that matter, this next year.
I'm sorry and I had compation at the beginning, but not now, not for the ones who DON'T want to work.

I only help those who help themselves. This disgusts me!!! I haven't EVER had anything handed to me... the compassion is gone for these folks!!! they should get off their laxy a$$ and work like everyone else!!!

And if they're not gonna get up and take care of themselves, where can I jump on this gravy train>?

Sad, but true.

Our church let a family of 8 stay in a church house. They lived there for a year then asked to move to help out another family.

THEY TRASHED THE PLACE.

Wow..TM...I didn't do the math like you did...makes me even angrier..I was just "guessing" a $1000/month house payment but I am sure you are correct...lets see that is about $30,000 plus the $15,000 Fannie Mae was willing to give them....we are up to at least $50,000 now and they think the house is overpriced....who do they think is paying for all of this????

I saw that same news piece. My first thought was f*&^ you. Get a job and earn it like everyone else has to. Sadly thats one of the problems with many people. If you help them a little they just want more. Plus its that type of attitude that makes people think all welfare recipients are like that. I'm sure they aren't.

I honestly did not know that there were still people out there managing to milk the whole Katrina deal.....I would have to say that they have had more than enough time to put their lives back together....mabye not totally, but at least enough to stand on their own two feet....

They should be happy I wasn't in charge of their financial banks. I would have started cutting them off at 6mths and at 1yr, nothing.

18mths of a Free Ride is rediculous!

It is truly sad that people are still milking the Katrina deal. Everytime I hear about Katrina, I flip the channel or get up and leave. That whole situation of people (not all mind you) taking advantage of what they were given is just sickening.

Get a BLEEP job!

My sister’s phone at work became the hot line for those who arrived from New Orleans to call. She said she felt really bad for the first few callers but after that she had no sympathy. She was given a list of questions to ask each caller and the majority of them had not work in NO and had no intention of looking for work here.

I remember seeing a story after the first year about a man who was a truck driver in LA but had not looked for work for a YEAR because his family did not know if they wanted to say here. They were living in a rent free apartment and he was crying that he didn’t know what they were going to do. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t find any logic in that statement, nor was I concerned he was going to have to move. If I remember correctly, many of them got extensions on rent.

What infuriates me the most are the people who were living in the run down "shacks" in the poorest part of New Orleans were demanding millions for their losses.

Um, excuse me, but their total possessions and home+land wasn't worth a total of $50k. Getting ANYTHING more than what their homes and possessions were valued at is atrocious!

Be happy you're getting one bloody nickel from the government!! 9/10 of them had no insurance, so they should be thanking their lucky stars that people pitied them and snet them money.
To continue to take take take is a spit in the face of those who donated. Guarantee because of this whole crappy situation, many people, including myself, will not be donating hard earned cash. My taxes are going to them anyways, so why add to the tally?

Get a BLEEP job!!

One man is filing a lawsuit against the govt for something like 4 quadrillion dollars but his attorney does say he will settle for less.

that family that lived rent free for 18 months should just count their blessings and walk away with whatever dignity they might be able to muster

i still don't understand why it was the government's responsibilty, or anyone else's for that matter to take care of these people.(evacuate, feed, house etc) how do they have a "leg to stand on" so to speak to complain? i mean honestly, if my house burned down tonight, i would not wait for someone to come and pick me up to get away from the fire. especially if i had a warning that tonight my house would catch fire and burn to the ground. these people need to place blame where it belongs. most had nothing, by their choice to begin with. why should i feel sorry? the only ones i feel sorry for are the kids who do not know any better. hopefully they go to school, get an education, and decide not to mooch off of the government or anyone else and make it on their own. they have to break the cycle. i raised 2 kids on my own for most of their lives. no help from the government, nor the ex. just me. i was barely above the poverty line $900 to be exact. my kids shared a bedroom in a tiny apartment, and sometimes we ate veggies for dinner, no meat because i couldn't afford it. we didn't starve. we had everything we needed and my kids had no idea we were that poor. i was so proud of myself for getting away from my abusive husband, and my kids were so proud of me too.we basically left with nothing but a few sticks of furniture and clothes. they said that they were so happy in our little apartment. my kids were always well groomed, clean clothes and went to school every day, and on time. no free rides for me. (even though the ex's family is extremely wealthy here in the metroplex...polit

politics, jets-yes more than one, land etc)i did not look for or expect anything from anyone..well, i did hope for child support lol..but that was a joke!
the point is, if you put your mind to it, you can do it...these people are lazy, they were lazy before katrina, and they still are. and as long as they can continue to be lazy, and get handouts, they will. let them go hungry a day or two, and see what happens. crime may go up, and then i guess they can get 3 meals a day, behind bars.

Beleive me Chatterbug. I know the struggle. i think the government should have cut the apron strings a long time ago.
Why should we keep taking care of people who won't help themselves.. goodnight
