I read a story online about an unmarried teacher, age 23, who had been teaching 5th graders for about a year in a Catholic school in Minnesota and she got pregnant and now she has been fired...unjustly she says....article didn't mention any contract issues ..she says she should be able to keep her job because it would show compassion and forgiveness...just wondering what the thoughts were in the blogging world?   Given all the controversies in the Catholic church....in re to the  abuses and coverups......

I think it's a Catholic school, so she should be held accountable to adhering to Catholic morals and they have every right to fire her.

Far as I know it's illegal to fire anyone because of pregnancy. Church school or not. I'd call a lawyer.

well the catholic church allows pedophiles to stay and preach i don't see why they won't allow a preg. teacher

Ain't that the truth!

Yeah, she probably needs to remain fired. Just because she teaches at a Catholic school doesn't mean she is Catholic or that she believes in anything she teaches. One need look no further than the Christian colleges and their staff to see that.

All priests, in the catholic schools are not pedophiles.
I am Catholic and really am sick of people saying ALL priests are bad

There have been pedophiles found in other religions as well.

You're correct, babysister.

It's politically correct to bash certain groups but not others.

Go figure.

Good point babysister....that minister at the Agape Christion Church in Mansfield was just tried and found guilty of sexual abuses in his church...

Right on babysister. Sexual abusers/pedophiles come in all sorts of packages, from every religion there is, priests, doctors, men with polio (my childhood best friends dad...nice huh) rich, poor....it has no specific color or look or social status.

and, to the OP, she's not a good role model for the students being pregnant and unmarried.

hmmm....this is a tough one! She should be able to keep her job because she's right it shows forgivness for having *whispers* SEX!

But on the flip side she's got to set an example for the Catholic beliefs. I guess they don't like pregant unmarried women? Not such a bad crime in my eyes. Happens all the time. The kids know you can get pregnant without being married. You're not going to burn in hell for it though. Hmmm...like i said tough one and I'm just thinking out loud. sorry there's not substance to my post...tehee.

I say if she gets fired for her job then the BABY's DADDY should get fired from his (whatever that maybe)...evens up the playing field a bit. He's setting a bad example too.

Day2...I had thought the same thing about the baby's daddy losing his job....won't happen..we're not quite there yet!!!Don't think much has changed over the years...when I was in high school many years ago..the pregnant girls were asked to leave...(kicked out so as not to taint the rest of the girls) but if the baby's daddy happened to be a student also..he did not have to leave....

The interesting thing is teachers can be some of the meanest people to other teachers who get pregnant while not married. Mainly because many teachers believe they are automatic role models and should be held to a higher degree of behavior. I know teachers that have all but shunned teachers for getting pregnant. To be honest sometimes the teachers are the only positive role models in some students life and when they start to appear like everyone else in the student's life, where does the student turn for good examples.

P.S. The Catholic church has always had a double standard for women and men...and I am a practicing Catholic (just a realistic one).

that's why we have JESUS! He's our role model. Everyone else in this life will disappoint you. time to get the head out of the clouds and set the expectations that we are all sinners. The catholic teachers included...and if what she did is so bad, well we are all bad to a certain degree.

reminds me of the story when everyone wanted to bash (literally with stones) that lady in the bible for having an affair, the only one who came to her defense was Jesus. makes you wonder. What would Jesus do?

"JESUS! He's our role model"- and you think these kids have their head in the clouds???? These kids are grounded in reality, most don't have Jesus/God in their life...so like I said teachers are some of the most positive role models. And what a sad commentary "Everyone else in this life will disappoint you"...maybe you should not expect perfection from everyone, because I have people in my life who have not disappointed me.

Yes, we are all sinners but there will always be a difference between a serial killer and me.

Jesus was devine- humans are not, so to compare the two is a bit short sighted. Although, we try to live to his "expectations", we do not ever expect to become him...or least we shouldn't.

"everyone else in this life will disappoint you" ORPHAN is true. That's reality. so speak of reality. when one of these loved ones of yours dies are you not going to be disappointed? At some point, you will be disappointed by the ones you love. We should not look to the people down here to be role models.

We should look up to our ultimate role model, Jesus/God. he's perfection, yes, we will always fall short yes. Are you a Christian?

No, someone who dies does not disppoint me. Why would I be disppointed because of something that is going to happen. And most importantly if they die of old age why would I be disappointed in that person. My grandmother lived to the ripe old age of 96, she had a great life...is she missed yes, but I am not disappointed in HER. How sad that you would blame your loved ones for dying (especially if it is natural causes).

To disappoint (by definition) a person must not live up to your expectations. What exactly is your expectation for your loved ones, that somehow they have it in their control to live forever????

So, DAY2 "everyone else in this life will disappoint you" is NOT true for those people who have realistic expectations of their loved ones...like living forever is not in their control. Maybe you should focus your disappointed to the place it belongs in that situation; on the event, NOT the person.

"Are you a Christian?" This definitely answers my question to whether or not you are actually reading what I have said...which is obviously no you aren't.

"We should look up to our ultimate role model, Jesus/God. he's perfection" ONCE AGAIN, these children don't have parents who care too much about them (food and shelter wise), so their spiritual well-being really isn't on their lists "to-do". So although it would be peachy-keen to have God in their lives...THAT ISN'T THE CASE. So do we leave them with absolutely no positive role models, and they will just be fine with the most recent man beating their mother, the drug dealer on their corner that has not problem using under age kids to deliver drugs, or the many other people they are surrounded with daily????

In addition to that, your minister/preacher has told you there should be NO role models in a person's life, but GOD. He should be the ultimate role model, but not the only. Should your children look to you as an example? Guess not because that would mean you are a role model to them, and why should a parent be a role model to their child. BTW a child can't learn to be a good Christian without (uhoh here it comes) ROLE MODELS TO SHOW THEM THE WAY!!!!

Gee, looks like Orphan's on a roll.

The Catholic priests and nuns are kind of like the modern day "Disciples". They are not to have any kind of sexual contacts, they take vows of celebacy. Most of your teachers in Montisori schools are either priests or nuns. Very seldom will you find one who isn't.

Now, how would it look to the students, if you're preaching celebacy, and you come up pregnant, AND the kids KNOW you're not married, because you're supposed to be married to the church.

Everyone should look to the Father, as a role model, but you also have to have people in your life that you look up to, as well. Those people are not meant to take the place of the Lord.

"If you run with Wolves, you'll learn to howl, but if you soar with Eagles, you'll learn to FLY." (sorry, don't know who said that)

That's why we have Role Models, someone to look up to. To aspire to be like, emulate.
A pregnant teacher is not one of them to Catholic students.
