NEW YORK -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton marched for labor and stumped with Democrats on Saturday, but sidestepped questions about the woman who has taken her place as the nation's most-talked-about female leader.

Clinton brushed aside questions about Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin during appearances at New York City's annual Labor Day parade and later during a stop on Staten Island.

"This election is about issues, and that's what's going to matter to people at the end of the day," she told reporters who asked her about the Alaska governor at a rally for a Democratic congressional candidate at Wagner College.

Clinton joined other New York politicians for a Saturday morning breakfast with union leaders in Manhattan, then marched up Fifth Avenue in the city's annual labor parade.

In the afternoon on Staten Island, she stumped for Democrat Mike McMahon, who is running for a congressional seat being vacated by Republican Vito Fossella.

Fossella decided not to seek re-election after a drunken driving arrest and a revelation that he fathered a child outside his marriage.

No longer a presidential candidate, Clinton was still welcomed warmly at all three events. Some supporters at her Staten Island rally brought old "Clinton for President" placards.

She only mentioned Palin by name once during the day, at the labor breakfast, when she uttered a modified version of a line from her speech at the Democratic National Convention.

"No way, no how, no McCain, no Palin," she said.

We all KNOW the only reason she said this ONE thing and ONE thing only about Sarah Palin was because she was FORCED to by the Oblahblah camp.

The election is about the issues facing every day average hard working americans, and the contenders are McCain and Obama.

Attention is being given to Palin just like it was given to Obama, because he was new on the scene and everyone wanted to know more about him, now its her turn.

Hillary took the right position, she wants to send the message she is not intimidated by this rookie, to engage Palin is to give crediability to her, and Hillary will not go there. Who knows they may be contenders one day. Smart move Hillary.

I would contend that there is a big difference in the media treatment of Senator Obama and Governor Palin, unless you consider the media's fawning upon every word and action of Senator Obama as being the same level of treatment as is being focused upon Governor Palin.

Senator Clinton is a very good politician. She knows that if Senator Obama does not win the election, she will be positioned to run for the presidency in 2012. She also knows that if Senator Obama does win, he probably will be a one-term president, in which case, she will be in position to run in 2012.

Senator Obama's feeble attempt to compare his level of experience to that of Governor Palin has given Governor Palin credibility. Eventually, Senator Clinton must publicly defend Senator Obama and his campaign against the arguments of Governor Palin. Right now, neither Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, of the Obama campaign know how to contend with Governor Palin.

I disagree, if Obama wins then he’ll run for re-election in 2012 with the full support of most if not all Democrats – Hillary couldn’t oppose him, she wouldn’t get anywhere in trying to.

Hillary knows better than to attack Sarah Palin too harshly, because Palin could totally humiliate her for a variety of reasons like riding on her husband’s coattails, ect….

If Senator Obama wins the election and implements all of the programs and tax increases that he is proposing, the outcry of the American taxpayer will be so great that every Democrat in this country will run for cover.

not only that hacksaw, perhaps hilary is thinking about life AFTER the election when McCain & Palin are in office.

if hilary is too hard on her, Palin will NOT forget it, nor will she forgive. i wouldn't.

but, if hilary plays nice, there could be something in it for her in the future.

above all else, hilary IS a politician.....

You have all hit on possibilities about Hillary, and yes she is a smart politican.

Hacksaw, I don't think Palin will go there with Hillary about running on her husband's coat tail. Palin is a smart poltican also, she would not want to start a war with Hillary's 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling. After all John McCain chose Palin to deliver those votes, not to turn them off.

If Palin starts on Hillary she will turn off more women voters and men because women do not like a "cat fight".

If Obama is not qualified then neither is John McCain.

Ivyman, Obama has not gotten a free ride from the media at all. If anyone has it's been McCain.

I hadn’t considered the possibility of Palin offending Hillary supporters, and that is a consideration that I’m sure she would make – I doubt if it will be an issue though, as Hillary will attack the entire ticket, but will most likely steer clear of attacking Sarah personally or she could face a backlash as well.

Obama is not qualified because in addition to his severe lack of experience, his bi-partisan credentials and judgment also come into question – it’s kind of hard to say any of that about McCain though….he’s definitely experienced, with 20+ year careers in both the military & elected service, and has reached across the aisle and embraced Democrats more times than anyone can count.

I don’t recall any late night comedy shows running parodies of how clearly McCain was being favored, but we saw several of them about Obama…they were so funny, because they were accurate and the only reporters to even ask Obama any questions about his numerous controversial associations (moderators during ABC debate with Hillary in the primaries) were brutalized for it, and after that the media has been very “hands off” with him, if not flooding him with praise & adoration.
