ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Alaska lawmaker leading an investigation into Gov. Sarah Palin's dismissal of her public safety commissioner should be removed because he appears to be manipulating the probe to damage her vice presidential candidacy, a Republican legislator says.

Alaska state Sen. Hollis French "appears to be steering the direction of the investigation, its conclusion and its timing in a manner that will have maximum partisan political impact on the national and state elections," state Rep. John Coghill said in a letter dated Friday.

Coghill, from North Pole, is on the Alaska Legislature's Legislative Council, the body that appointed French to oversee the investigation. The letter was sent to the council chairman, Sen. Kim Elton, D-Juneau, whom Coghill asks to convene a meeting to discuss whether French should be replaced. Coghill's efforts were reported by Newsweek Saturday.

Coghill said the council instructed French, an Anchorage Democrat, to keep politics out of the investigation.

"He just failed that, in my view," Coghill said Saturday.

Elton did not immediately return a message left at his office.

In July, the council approved $100,000 for an investigation into whether Palin abused her power by firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Monegan has said he felt pressure form Palin family and staff to dismiss a trooper, Mike Wooten, who went through a messy divorce with her sister before Palin's election as governor.

Coghill wrote in the letter that French was quoted in media reports that the results of the probe were going to be an "October surprise" that is "likely to be damaging to the administration."

Coghill said he was not approached by the McCain-Palin campaign to draft the letter, but that called the campaign to "apprise" them of the letter he sent it.

"I'm on my own in this one," he said.

What an interesting coincidence that French is a Democrat! Or is it?

How convenient a Republican accusing a Democrat, how partisan is that. This investigation was going on before anyone knew she was going to be the republican VP choice.

The investigation began in July. There were no problems then with the investigation, now suddenly we have a problem. The Republicans must have something to hide because when the truth comes and or they cannot defend something they go on attack mode. Just look at how dprin behaves.

The Obama campaign and the Democratic Party are very worried about the selection of Governor Palin as the Republican Party's vice-presidential candidate. This is another example how low the Obama campaign and the Democratic Party will stoop in order to smear Governor Palin in an attempt to embarrass her, her family, and the McCain campaign.

Alaska State Senator French acknowledged that he had improperly speculated about possible outcomes of the case and expressed regret. Unfortunately, that apology is not good enough. His public speculation about possible outcomes of the case tainted the credibility of any findings of the investigation. If Senator French had any honor or integrity, he would resign from the investigation in order to preserve, at least, the appearance of objectivity.

Many members of the media now are focusing their attention toward Governor Palin in an attempt to help the Obama campaign discredit her. Thus far, their attempts to discredit her have resulted in positive support for her.

I am disappointed, however, at the response of many women toward Governor Palin. I believed that more women would have rallied to support her as a result of the media's attacks on her and her family, especially her daughter.

Everything reported about Palin has been true facts, nothing has been made up.

She is getting just what you all gave to Obama, how soon you forget.

You have your opinion of how the facts reasonate with you and I have mine. Yes we will wait and see how it turns out.

Yes, I am biased Obama is my candidate, and those who support McCain are also. Therefore, I do not try to sway your opinion about who you support, and I do post information that may interest others on this blog. You can weigh in and give a different point of view that's your choice.

i figured she wouldn't garner the support of droves of women. gangster said it well last week. alot of women can't stand a beautiful, sucessful woman, no matter WHAT she does.

it's pathetic out right jealousy. but it won't matter in the end........she doesn't need their support, it's pretty fickle anyway.

if she was ugly or old, these women would be all about Palin. LOL

mommie: Facts are neutral; they are neither right or wrong. The inferences drawn form facts, however, can be right or wrong. It is my intent to persuade as many people as I can to support the Republican Party ticket of Senator McCain and Governor Palin for President and Vice-President.

dprin: This will be a close election and every vote will be important. It would be a disgrace for Governor Palin to be denied being the first woman elected as Vice-President of the United States simply because women voters were jealous of her.

Jealous of her, not a chance. First of all why would the average women be jealous of her. Those are dprin words and her mindset. When a person disagrees with her she attacks and call names, she is the typical republican.

I actually said I liked Palin when I first heard about her and I posted those thoughts in a blog on this site.

I do support her for vice presidenr because she is too far right wing conservative for me. However the more I find out about her the less I like the things she does in the name of advancing her career. Voters need to be informed voters and need to get a sense of who Sarah Palin is and get information about her that has not been pre-packaged.

It is my intent also to persuade as many voters as possible to vote for Obama. I will post the facts to counteract the lies posted here about Obama, don't ever think that you all can say and post what you want about Obama and we supporters are going to sit by and let you do. That's not my intent, I will support my candidate tooth and nail!

Obama/Biden 08!!
