On this very sad day of the shootings at VT, I think it is very morbid of the news medias to not only show a cell phone video of the actual shooting happening but to also show photos of students who were shot!  To me I think it is disheartening how the news media feel that good reporting is showing the injured and the chaos as it happens.  I just feel that todays news stations steps way over the line of glorifying violence.

My heart goes out to the families who were watching the news and had to see their sons or daughters fate on TV before being properly notified.

hello... we know that everyone thrives on seeing this sort of report on the news. It makes it more real and intersting. it is just the way of the world

News was interesting before the news media decided to go with the show all concept. Now that everything has been shown on TV for so long people have now been desensitized to violence that it just don't bother them anymore and no one speaks out about the content that is shown in the news today. You have ask when is enough, enough?

Unfortunately it IS the way of the world now.

I also think by seeing so much of this in the everyday news...it gives sick people ideas.

As a Police Officer for 11 years years and now still a Reserve Officer, I have a theory about this kind of violence. Without a doubt the News Media contributes a certain percentage to the problem.

I hope and pray that it doesn't trigger a copy cat crime as it has in some cases in the past.
With so much information available on CNN, internet, cell phones and newspapers, it puts way too many ideas in the minds of criminals, would be criminals, and mentally unstable types.

There are people out there that will do horrible things to other people, just to get on the News or go down in history as the person that killed the most people in one day.

This guy today made history and I pray to God that some deranged psycho, that wants to take a bunch of people with him, doesn't try and break his record.

One more thing, Hollywood, and video games contribute a certain percentage to the problem also. America is desensitized, to a certain extent with violence.

America is so intrigued by the murder and mayhem that we see at the movies and on TV. This is obvious when you see the popularity of such shows at the box office. Deep down most people know this, but most don't want to admit it.

So Hugs...That is my theory and I hope I'm wrong. After the dust settles on this horrible incident they just may not be able to make sense out of such senseless act.

I agree that we see too much. Is the news even safe for the whole family to watch?

And it's not only the visual, it's also the things that news media TELL us also. Ever heard the expression "too much information?" The news is already enough, I really think we should be spared the grusome details. I can't think of a reason I would need to know whether a robbery victim was raped or not (when the report is that "it is unknown at the time whether the victim was raped"). Someone being robbed is enough to know!

But you know, people love drama and we slow down to gawk at traffic accidents. It's just our nature now and the news reflects that for us.

Yes ma'am....it is human nature.

As for me... I have seen way too much blood and gore and have never gotten used to it. In real life people get shot and die. They don't get up and star in another movie next week.

I don't discredit or shame the news media for showing it - if they didn't, they would be bombarded with complaints that they were "censoring" or they would lose viewers to other stations that were showing the footage.

I am ashamed that someone out there - while their classmates were staring death in the face - decided to turn on their camera and film. In my opinion, that is FAR more disturbing.

I wonder if they recorded before or AFTER they called 911 or campus police?

That is just sick. Filming while hearing or seeing gunshots SO close would be the farthest thing from my mind.

i dont blame media for telling the story i do belive we should all pray for the famlies and that this dont ever happen again i do however think whoever took the time to film it on there cell is sick and it bouthers me that this person was worried about filming it instead of there life or outhers and hope this person called the police before they did it

IS - As a photographer, I'll try to help first, then whip out my camera. Two men died ten feet away from me last year, and that is what exactly I did. As another blogger mentioned, we are living in a technological world.

Hug,

So you are saying media should not have shown video of the September 11th attacks on America?

How about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina?

You are making the argument that the media should keep video to ourselves and force the citizens we are supposed to inform to imagine what significant events are really like.

Is that really what you would like to see happen?

What I am saying is I don't think we need to see the broadcasting of dead bodies, injured loved ones and the act of violence as it happens. We didn't need these images years ago to get the news across and it made an impact then. Even thou someone else took the video does not mean you have to air it. Hurricane Katrina was an act of nature and not an act of violence by human hands. Even when 9/11 happened did the public really need to see the constant images of the jets flying into the building killing hundreds of loved ones, while their families grieve not knowing if their family member was killed during that horrific act of violence. During both of those incidents there were constant photos and live coverage showing the dead and injured laying in the streets, was that necessary to get the public's attention, I say not because both incidents where horrific enough just by hearing about it and it seems the news media tends to push the public's anxiety over the top when you air such traumatic images. I just wish it could be toned down a bit but as someone else said because of the world's technology today it will most likely not happen.
