I've heard on the news this morning how some people have complained that the hurricane wasn't quite as bad as they thought & how they're upset that the DFW area will miss the brunt of Ike. Just like with Gustav, some people were angry that they had to evacuate & that the hurricane coverage took up most of the news time. I saw a blog yesterday where the blogger was irritated about all the Ike coverage.

Well, let's all thank God that the meteorologists have the capability to predict these monster storms. Let's thank God for officials who help evacuate people & save lives. It wasn't that long ago that even with the best equipment, meteorologists were unable to accurately predict these storms, much less predict their path. My mother remembers the terrible hurricane of 1938 which devastated the Eastern Seaboard & New England. Back then, nobody knew there was a hurricane until it was on top of them. That hurricane killed over 600 people. Think about how many lives might have been saved had they been able to evacuate people ahead of the storm. Even as devastating as Katrina was, think how many lives were saved because of the evacuation order.

The same holds true for any other hurricane. Hurricanes aren't just "bad storms". They can completely turn lives upsidedown or destroy them altogether. Reports said that about 500,000 people were evacuated from the Texas coast ahead of Ike. Imagine the devastation if there was no way to predict Ike.

I have no problem with storm coverage, I'm grateful for it. People can prepare & be on alert because of it. It's far better to be prepared & then say, "Wow, that was close, thank goodness it wasn't so bad", than to be caught unprepared.

Last night I talked to a man who was a cop in Louisiana when Isodor hit. People were evacuated, but there were still some people who decided to stay to ride out the storm. He said how he ended up having to rescue a family from their home in the middle of Isodor. In the 5 minutes he was in the house, the water had risen 3 feet in the front yard. The storm completely destroyed the family's home. Had they not been rescued, the entire family wouldn't have survived the storm.

So, instead of getting irritated because the "storm didn't affect me, so they need to tailor the news just for me", think about those it did affect. Think about those who had to leave & bring only what they could carry. Think about those whose lives were saved because of today's advances in weather coverage. This storm affected somebody & those somebodies are sitting on pins & needles wondering if they even have anything to go home to.

Girl, you are singing my song. I think those people who complain about a show being interrupted have nothing else in their life to look forward to. I got tired of the coverage once they said it was going to miss us, so I just changed the channel. What a concept?

Can you imagine the outrage these days if 1600 people were killed like once before because the news media didn't cover a storm?

Good blog.

The entire news hour should not be dedicated to it tho. It's not going to damage the metroplex...but i bet there is loads of news stories that are happening that we're not hearing about

First off - NO ONE SHOULD EVER USE THE TERM EVACUEE again!

I am forcing myself to maintain every time a news anchor says "evacuee" - I want to shoot my TV. FOX NEWS ARE YOU LISTENING???

The thing about leaving home though is not that you need to leave for a day - it's that after the storm they won't let people back for days or weeks.

I think that it just makes more people decide to ride things out, not knowing when or if the "authorities" will let them back in.

The storm coverage is great, but you have to admit that every storm is built up to be the storm of the century now. Live coverage wall to wall on every channel.

When they end up like the last few, well they are bad right on the coast and some flooding inland - but Houston floods with any good rain.

All news reporters that stand in the storm reporting ("Cheerleading for disaster") should be tied up with microphone cord and hung in the middle of the next hurricane eye. Broadcast that live.

I've been flipping channels. My older two kids came home and they are keeping in touch with college friends from the Houston area via text messaging. Because some of them are young, they don't have battery powered radios and with no power, they have no way of knowing what is happening. (Hint: The crank up flashlights that have radio and siren and a way to power cell phones are a nice gift-my kids each got one last year....)So my kids are relaying information to those kids. As for the media, I saw Geraldo tempt the levees last week and then get splashed yesterday. I wonder at some point where those media/celebrities become more of a liability than an asset.

Not only did Geraldo get swept off his feet by the surf, he got hit in the head with a piece of debris. It stunned him but he wasn't cut.

I don't see the need for them reporters to stand out in the pouring rain and wind and report. That part just seems dumb to me.

NorthTx,you must have been reading my mind again! I've been saying this for so long now, especially after seeing Anderson Cooper from Fox news almost get decapitated by a stop sign that whizzed past his head while he was covering Hurricane Katrina. If he hadn't ducked he would have had his head handed to him literally.

Dallas, I guess I have been peeking over you shoulder and didn't know it. I had not heard about the Cooper thing, but Natalie Solis was having a tough time talking and breathing this morning on her shot. It has to be hard on the body to do that not to mention things flying around to hurt them.

Did you see Brandon Todd's report on how the rain stung as it hit his face.I've been in that type of situation during Hurricane Inki that hit the Hawaiian islands, and when I saw that it brought back some awful memories of how wind swept rain can feel like pellets hiting your face. After awhile this wears you down as well as struggling to keep your feet on the ground.

You have to realize that News anchors get very few chances for thrill seeking. Think about it, most the time they are stuck behind a desk talking to a camera. How much fun is that.

Have them sign the liability release and tell'em to get after it. As for as Geraldo is concerned, he has'nt been the same since that guy hit him in the head with a chair. lol

I did see that. I have been in the rain during a hurricane, but I was at a concert at the Cotton Bowl in Aug once and a bad storm rolled in. We were in no way prepared for it and not only did the rain hurt, it was cold.

Got caught on a lake once and it happened again. I am sure neither compares to hurricane force winds driving the rain and I think that is an experience I will skip.

Oh Outspoken1, you haven't seen my post on Geraldo have you? This one will bring back a bunch of memories for you including his getting his nose broken by Skinheads. But, what many of you don't know about him is that very early in his career he exposed a mental hospital in Staten Island New York. I fully remember seeing that piece on T.V. and trust me it wasn't a pretty sight either.

I noticed Delkus rode this one out in Dallas unlike last time when he was in Lafayette. I guess they are running tag teams on reporting hurricanes now. So when's the next one?

Gerry Rivers, better known as Geraldo Rivera is a major league panderer to the lowest form of infotainment. Believe me, if Jerry Springer never existed, Geraldo would be doing that show. Do you remember Al Capone's vault?

Not just that vault, TTB, but how about drawing a map in sand showing our troop movement. If I remember correctly, the Army told him to go back to the states.

TexasTruBlu,I sure do remember Al Capone's vault in fact I did a post on Geraldo Rivera, but do you also remember what his first assignment was? Ever heard of Willowbrook Mental Hospital in Staten Island New Yor? If Gerry Rivers hadn't exposed that mess when he did there'd be an even bigger mess today.

I, too, am greatful for the hurricane news. I would rather be prepared and not need it, than to be caught unprepared and suffer the consequences. Also, people should have an interest in what is going on in other places and not just their own little world. You can learn a lot if you expand your area of interest.

The media has done an excellent job with the storm coverage.

That's hilarious, Cari, but it is indicative of the utter frustration for the media that hypes things that fail to deliver.

I can only stomach so much of any story. The hurricane coverage of Ike I grew weary of sooner than I expected. The drama queens were out and about, despite "certain death" for those that failed to evacuate.

Here's my gripe. Keep your piehole shut unless you know with certainty what will happen. And here's why I say that. Have you heard of the 1,000's who say they won't evacuate the next time? These are the people who will perish IF and WHEN the BIG ONE arrives for real.

Then I will be quick to cast blame on the media hype and the stupidity of those lulled to sleep by the aforementioned.

I laughed at the one channel 4 reporter. She said "you can see the waves "crashing" down on the beach behind me. My cat could have waded in those little waves. They were nothing. Come on there is enough drama without making it up.

I am a North Dallas mom of 3 daughters. I have lived in Dallas since 1970 & have watched this great city grow. I enjoy being a "tourist" in the Metroplex by taking my children around to different attractions. We are members of the Dallas Zoo and we enjoy road trips around Texas. Two of my new hobbies are exploring Texas' backroads and trying out different barbecue restaurants in the quest to find the "best bbq in Texas". I have grown up watching Channel 4 News & like my oldest daughter said the other day, "I won't watch any other news, Mom."
