It was wrong for the woman who found the $700 to keep it. She is guilty of theft. I hope that her guilt keeps her from sleeping tonight. Yes, the woman who left it should have been more careful, but it was a mistake & clearly she needed that money. And, it was rightfully hers. To even interview people to find out if this was wrong was ludicrous. One young lady said that the woman who took it should keep it & it wasn't wrong. Of course it was wrong! The honest thing to do would be to report it to the store & say you found a sum of money, then leave your phone number & allow the rightful owner the chance to claim it. Usually after a reasonable time, say a week or 10 days, if the owner doesn't claim it, then it's yours.

Does anyone remember the Andy Griffith episode where Opie found a wallet with $50 in it? There was no identification in the wallet, so right away Opie thought he had $50! Well, his father told him that they needed to put an ad in the paper saying they found a wallet with a sum of money in it & then wait 7 days for the owner to claim it. When the waiting period was up, Opie was told the money was his. He went & bought something with $10 & put the other $40 in his piggy bank. After he bought his prize, he returned to the courthouse to tell his dad. Andy wasn't there, but then the wallet's owner walked in & asked about the wallet. Opie ended up returning his toys to the store & giving the man back his wallet & $50. He told his dad that he couldn't enjoy his findings knowing that the rightful owner needed the money much more than he did.

It's too bad we don't have tv shows like that now that teach good lessons in humanity. Whether it's a crime or not to keep that sum of money, the ethical & moral thing to do would be to attempt to return it to it's owner. The same holds true if a person found a diamond ring or other valuable item.

I hope the woman who took the $700 does the right thing. Even if the news story gives her a change of heart, it'll be well worth it. I can't imagine her sitting in her living room watching the news & seeing herself on tv taking the money. If I was her family member, I'd nag her until she did the right thing. Let's just hope she does.

June,
By what you are saying that anyone who finds anything is guilty of theft? Why does have to be a large sum of money? Have you ever found a penny and not turned it in? If you have kept that penny than you have stolen it and should face the full extent of the law!!

I once lost my LITTLE wallet which held my monthly rent payment in cash. (before I started to buy and using a bank account)
I was too busy hauling my heavy 10lb. newborn that I did not feel it when it fell out of my hands.

I knew exactly where I had dropped it, but, it was gone by the time I went back.

But, I blamed myself for carrying that cash around with me and not being more careful.

I learned that there is no excuse for me to carry that amount of cash around unless I am going to run it straight to the bank to to pay what I am going to pay immediately.

Yes, it is the HONEST thing to do and turn it over. But, I don't believe that it is theft.

One, the person did not take it from anyone.

Two, the person did not steal it from where she/he found it.

Three, it is that person who has to live with his/her dishonesty if asked and said no.

But, if it is found, it is just that....found.

We know every situation is different. It wasn't like she was walking in the park and found it, we saw the raw video, lol.
That female picked that envelope up knowing that it wasn't hers. All she had to do was pick it up and tell the cashier to page the Manager to that register. They in turn call the police, and they make a report.
She leaves her name, and then she gets a huge Thank you, maybe even a hug or better yet a reward.
Instead shes pasted all over the news because she made a stupid greedy decision.
The police watched the video and are imposing whatever law that applies to 'This' situation.

i feel like if money (any amount over a few bucks) should be attempted to be returned. that lady clearly could have caught the woman who left it and said "here, you left this behind". they were in line immediately next to each other. the woman who took the money did it knowing it wasn't hers. i think it's a little different if you find money in a parking lot, or laying on the ground. however, this woman was standing right in front of her. she made no attempt to do the right thing. found money is not stealing i don't believe. but knowing who the owner is, and not attempting to return....is wrong!

Those people who don't think taking such a quantity of money like that, should think about if they lost their credit card. Would that give the finder the right to use it? I once found someone's credit card in a parking lot. I took it home & called the person's bank, had it cancelled & had them re-issue the person another card.

There is a difference here between right, wrong and crime,

What that woman did is wrong -- and despicable,

But it definitely is not a crime.

I recently signed an authorization for a one time withdrawl on my debit card

The merchant CHANGED the amount to a higher fee.

Since it is an electronic transaction the bank refuses to do anything about it and the district attorney's office says it is not a crime.

There is absolutely no difference in changing an electronic transaction than there is on changing the dollar amount on a check -- except in the eyesof the law.

The woman who took that money should be boiled in oil --but she is not a criminal in our society/

What bothers me is this, what is so complicated about right and wrong?

All of us should know from what we observed on the security camera is this.

If the woman knowingly and intentionally picked up that envelope full of money IT WAS WRONG.

What about my friend who found a "gangsta roll" with $1000 and some drugs under some movie seats? Is it wrong of him to keep the money (toss the drugs)?

Difference between right and wrong and theft.

Been there, done that....but, did not blame the person for my own ignorance. Just of dishonesty.

TI...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....what do you think? LOL

I don't know if it is okay or not, luv. Is it okay to keep it because no one is going to come back demanding their dope? Or because the money was ill-gotten? Or is it wrong because that was someone else's money? I don't know.

The lady in the grocery store - if it was indeed on purpose - is a theif. The woman who carries around $700 and leaves it at grocery stores is of questionable intelligence.

I don't carry cash. Evah. The last time I carried cash I got my purse stolen out of my car by a prostitute (not a joke) in a prostitution/ID theft ring that targeted moms dropping off kids at daycare.

A "gangsta roll" with $1000 & drugs needs to be turned into the police. If you keep it, you are abetting a crime. Also, how do we know that the woman who took the cash had distracted the woman who owned the money? Criminals & con artists have good ways to distract others. When they see someone with a good amount of cash, they will distract them someway. It almost looks like the woman who took it knew what was in that envelope. She didn't look in it before she took it either. So, it's likely this woman is a criminal.

I didn't find it, june. My friend found it while cleaning the theater. He was young. He kept it and paid his rent (bought a video game too). What are the cops going to do with it? Finger print it? I'm not saying it is okay. I'm just saying that I understand either way.

How did the lady know she had a lot of cash? Was she flashing it around? Why was her cash outside of her purse anyway? Was she not careful? I know this is one of those situations where we don't have all the facts. I'm sure with her face all over TV this woman will either step forward or have a face transplant.

Yes, it is theft. When you take something you know doesn't belong to you it is theft. She didn't find the money, it was left NOT lost.

Finding a penny on a sidewalk, you have no ability to know WHERE to turn it in to. This woman knew exactly where she should turn it into. Additionally, I have found dimes on the floor of a store and tried to turn them in. When they won't take them I just leave it on the counter.

Also if I found a bag with thousands upon thousands of dollars, yes I would still turn it in. Character is how you act even when people aren't watching.

Rule of thumb-treat others the way you would want to be treated...if you lost hundreds of dollars would you want it back, THEN YOU NEED TO TURN IN ANYTHING YOU FIND.

i agree with lee. the lady who took the money should be ashamed of herself. she will be the first one on the news wailing about how her drug dealer child is a "good kid" and doesn't know where he got these influences from.
i too, have lost money. the money was donated from my church, no less. it was about $300 in cash, i dropped it, POOF, gone. but it was my fault. and though i feel the lady's pain who lost it and wished someone had turned it in (as i would have and HAVE done before), it was the fact that she wasn't paying attention that it was lost. again, i IN NO WAY advocate the loser taking $700 that she knew wasn't hers. but should she be arrested for someone else's irresponsibilty... i don't think so. just my thoughts.

It would have been easy for the second lady to catch the first lady and return the evenlope to her...that is what I probably would have done. Did the second lady commit a crime? I dont believe she did. I also dont beleive that what she did wasnt right either.
In this day and time, when so many people live paycheck to paycheck, its easy to become a "vulture".
Another thing...if I find a "gangsta roll" or a drug cash stash, you can bet your sweet little bippy that I am camping on that! I aint about to turn it in or try to find the druggies or gangsters that lost it. That is their loss and my gain. Maybe it will put some druggies out of bussiness or less guns on the street!

I am a North Dallas mom of 3 daughters. I have lived in Dallas since 1970 & have watched this great city grow. I enjoy being a "tourist" in the Metroplex by taking my children around to different attractions. We are members of the Dallas Zoo and we enjoy road trips around Texas. Two of my new hobbies are exploring Texas' backroads and trying out different barbecue restaurants in the quest to find the "best bbq in Texas". I have grown up watching Channel 4 News & like my oldest daughter said the other day, "I won't watch any other news, Mom."
