What has happened to Dunston's Steakhouse? It seems that Gene Dunston not only doesn't care to keep long time customers, but doesn't care about getting new business either. This is yet another example of business owners forgetting who keeps them in business.

For years, I have been a regular customer at the Dunston's on Harry Hines. The food was always great & the service wonderful. But tonight I dealt with Gene Dunston for the first time & realized that he somehow doesn't care to be in the restaurant business anymore. They couldn't get a simple filet mignon cooked properly. TWICE. Both steaks came out RAW. So raw, that to eat them would have been a health hazard. The first one I sent back. After about 20 minutes, I asked how my steak was coming along, they said the chef had a lot of other tickets & had just put mine on the grill. The 2nd one came out just as raw. I then asked for Mr. Dunston. I told him what happened & said how I didn't think I should have to pay for something I couldn't eat. He argued with me, telling me, "We have already cooked you 2 steaks!" Well, so? Both steaks were inedible. The first time I sent the steak back wasn't so bad, those things happen now & then, but the 2nd time was inexcusable. There was no reason they shouldn't have made it right. He even thought that I should pay because they had to waste those 2 steaks on me. He was clearly irritated about having to deal with a less than satisfied customer. In my life I have never dealt with a restaurant manager or owner who wasn't interested in keeping good customers. I wouldn't have been upset if he had been nice about it. Maybe he's just been in the business too long. But, as empty as this Dunston's usually is (& it was even emptier tonight), I think I have identified the problem. When you don't work at making your customers happy, you won't see them back. In today's world, with the economy the way it is & large chains taking over, you would think that private businesses such as Dunston's would make sure they not only kept their long time customers, but worked at drawing in new business as well.

Tonight Gene Dunston reinforced the general opinion that businesses no longer care about their customers. They have forgotten why they are in business in the first place & who keeps them in business. It’s the customers, Gene! Clearly Gene Dunston has fallen into that mind set. As long as customers stay quiet & say nice things, then alright, they’ll be nice. But if there is a problem, they will act irritated & argue that the customer should pay anyways, even for products that either are not delivered or arrive in unusable, inedible or otherwise unsatisfactory condition. I even told him how his attitude just cost him a good customer & he just shrugged his shoulders. Well, ok. It's no water off my back. I'm not the one with the giant, empty restaurant on a Saturday night. And, don't worry, Gene, you won't be bothered with good customers like me anymore. From now on, my eat-out money will go to someone who cares.

I agree June! My wife and I love Saltgrass and it is a lot better than Dunstons! I used to eat at Dunstons at lease twice a month and ran into the same kind of service that you received. I didnt say anything or talk to Mr. Dunston, I just left a lousy tip for the lousy service and took my appetite to Saltgrass.
Another excellant steak house is Papa Brothers but they are quite the $$$$. There service there is excellant, the atmosphere is wonderful and aside from Saltgrass, I couldnt recomend a better resturante.

Bon apetite'

I prefer Texas Road House for steak.

For the best service you can get, try Applebee's in Mesquite. I was served the wrong thing (not what I ordered) once and they gave me my dinner free. The asst. manager came over and said she was sorry and then said, 'did you know you were our 1,000,000th customer? You get a free dinner.'

The manager always comes by the table and asks how the food is.

Mornin June :)

I'd say that Texas Roadhouse, Saltgrass and Trail Dust are all equally good for a nice steak. If you like ribs, though, Texas Roadhouse is the place...LOL. And I agree with NTX, the service at that Applebee's really is outstanding.

My husband has his own business and I can tell you by the comments he gets that you're exactly right, too many businesses just don't care anymore. He's pretty old school when it comes to customer service and it's really kind of sad that people are surprised.

Good morning, June...Hey ww...

I'd have thought this would be a time where business owners were exceptionally nice...with the economy being so bad and all.

Yea Saltgrass always does me good. But I miss Traildust. All the others have the wimpy 20 ouncers.
I love to take home the rest from the "30 OUNCE STUD" and slice it thin with scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, thats real hash browns, and slice tomato and texas toast. A real Texas breakfast.

June,

I am somewhat astonished. We are regulars at the Lovers Lane location, and always get great service. We just love the place, and find the 10oz. fillet to be the best steak value in Dallas.

I did take my dad to the Harry Hines location for lunch one day. I was sorely disappointed as that place is cavernous- VERY LOUD- and no salad bar- just a few pieces of lettuce on a plate. The Lovers location has a true, old fashioned salad bar where you make your own salad, and it is not to be missed if you like salad.

I will also tell you we prefer to sit in the bar in the back, but you will need reservations, as it is usually full. As for the front of the house, you can generally get a seat without much of a wait.

As for the waiters and waitresses, they all seem to have been there for many years, and all give great service. So I say skip that HH location and give the LL a try.

10 ounce? Is that the appetizer or childs menu? :)
Do they have any steak for a man?

Just kidding. But when I want steak, I want steak.

They have larger steaks, including an 18oz, T-Bone, if that is your thing.

I just I don't eat that much anymore. Usually, after I have a good sized bowl of salad, I don't need a huge hunk of red meat. I also prefer a higher quality cut of meat, so that bacon wrapped fillet is just about perfect for me these days- no fat, no gristle, very tender, and cooked over mesquite, it is very tasty. They never miss on cooking it properly, either.

I'm not defending the HH location, I was not impressed with it when I dropped in for lunch. I suspect there are a lot of convention folks hitting that place. Either way, I would not go back just because it was so freaking LOUD inside. We couldn't have a normal conversation.

Some Saltgrass Steakhouses are good, others are not. Lawry's is the absolute best beef in town, but you pay through the nose for it. Mortons is good if you can find one. There used to be a place down on Greenville that my parents loved. You could select your own steak. But service in some businesses is a joke. I guess they don't care about repeat business although successful entrepreneurs will tell you that's where the money is.

They closed the Dunston's by my house in Mesquite but we always enjoyed Dunstons. Now they have closed the Traildust too there is a large demolition trailer there.

I have no excuse for Mr. Dunston, but I know that in my years of dealing with the family, I have always had a nice experience. My husband has eaten at the one on HH and has complained about the service, he said he will never eat there again, but the one on Lover's sounds an awful lot like the one that used to be in the Mesquite area, so I am sure we will go to the Lovers location when we need a Dunston Fix. Our all out favorite Steak place is Saltgrass now, we also enjoy Texas Roadhouse but alot of the times it is too noisy and you can't hear yourself think in the restaurant. For some really good ribs AND BBQ, there is a place in downtown called Baby Back Shaqs... he is on Akard close to Corinth, he has some of the best BBQ in town, the ribs are excellent and his smoked chicken IS the best in town. They also have these stuffed potatos that are as big as your head... makes 2 or 3 meals for an average person.. If you are ever downtown and want some really good BBQ, go visit Shaq.

Lawry's isn't bad at lunch price wise, they do a semi-buffet. I think the prime rib meal is about $15 or so...a bargain compared to Lawry's at dinner. The Keg is good also, but a bit high priced than Saltgrass, etc.

I like the biggest steaks. I like to take home and have the rest for breakfast.

I am a North Dallas mom of 3 daughters. I have lived in Dallas since 1970 & have watched this great city grow. I enjoy being a "tourist" in the Metroplex by taking my children around to different attractions. We are members of the Dallas Zoo and we enjoy road trips around Texas. Two of my new hobbies are exploring Texas' backroads and trying out different barbecue restaurants in the quest to find the "best bbq in Texas". I have grown up watching Channel 4 News & like my oldest daughter said the other day, "I won't watch any other news, Mom."
