I would like to know what you think about the story of the little kindergarden boy who is laying in ICU because of an injury in school.

He has to be helped to breath and eat through tubes.  Doctors are not sure that he will come out of this condition.  His future is not clear.

The school report read that he was RESPONSIVE BUT, SOME WHAT LATHARGIC.

RED FLAG!!!!!  Does that not constitute calling parents and ambulance right away?

This is not the first time a school nurse has messed up like this.

I am tired of hearing the excuses and the fault being placed on the child or the parent.

What excuse does this school have for this?

The life of this little boy might be gone.

How could she not call 911..was she afraid of how it would look to the school? I hope the little boy recovers from this. I'm sure the nurse is having a hard time accepting that she made a huge mistake by not getting medical help. It was kind of weird to me that the school rushed to let the family know that they are not financially responsible...you know that school is preparing for a lawsuit right now. if they aren't they're stupid...cause one is deserved.

how are you doing? been racing anymore?

TM I think that state licenses should be revolked, criminal charges should filed, and a civil lawsuit should be sought.

LOL, TM....no, not racing!!!

I wanted to post pics for you guys to see what is going on...but, they are not very pretty.

Anyways...I am so glad that the parents got themselves an attorney right away. It will never bring back or change what has happened to their little boy....Lord Be with him...but, maybe they can get to the truth and find out who is really to blame. If you read the whole story and listen to the interview, it starts with the PE teacher then his homeroom teacher then the nurse and finally, the principal.
That's alot of people passing around the blame.

They are ALL to blame for what this poor child and his family are going through.
They expect parents to follow policy and procedures when they can't even follow them themselves.

I hope this is a big wake up call to all these damn schools that don't care about these poor kids and just keep complaining about not getting paid enough.

I responded to BYY's blog re: this so I will post it here as well:

This is from my point of view as a school nurse after seeing the video:

First, as I understand it, the kid "fell" while playing basketball. I don't know if any ADULT saw him fall, but it was reported that there were no complaints of injury or hurting by that student. He went back to class, & did not seek out any attention for any perceived problem.

An hour later, he told his teacher his neck hurt. Teacher had him rest his head for a few minutes. Then he went to lunch.

At lunch he was still complaining, so was sent to the nurse. It sounded like he was ok when he got to the nurses office, then deteriorated to the point of being unresponsive.

Now, what I would have done, after the child got to me, was to assess his responsiveness (is he alert, does he know where he is?. How did he fall, and on what part? Next call the parents (I DON'T call for everything, I only call for head/neck injuries or if I find an abnormality). When he started to become "unresponsive", call 911 and monitor his ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation) until paramedics got there. Fill out incident report. "CYA".

You cannot call 911 for every fall or possible bruise. By God we could have an ambulance at every school if that's what people want.

I agree that the nurse should have called 911 when the child became unresponsive, Other than that, I'm not sure what else could have been done. (given the information I have)

Call parents wben a kid skins their knee?? Call a parent every time a kid complains of a headache? Call the parent every time they complain of a stomach ache? Call if they get poked by a pencil?

That won't happen in my world unless there is an abnormality or a head or neck injury.

Also, the state doesn't require RN's, but most schools do have an RN or one that is shared by another school. RN's employed by DISD MUST have a Bachelors degree (not an LPN, and not a 2 year or 3 year RN degree).

I have called the ambulance to my school when kids have asthma attacks, parents KNOW the kid has asthma, but do not have any rescue inhalers at the school. Next up is a filing with CPS..............

And, although it's unfortunate, nurses DO NOT have xray vision. In any case where there could POSSIBLY be a fracture of any kind, I "recommend" (with WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION), that they seek medical attention if the problem persists. CYA.

We understand what you mean about not calling 911 everytime.

But, you should know how serious a kneck injury can be. Especially on a baby like that!
