You would think that with all the abandoned children or orphans that we have here in the United States, that the Americans would adopt one of them.  Well, no, they go out to China or Mexico or Guatemala to pay high dollar for these children.  Not only that, most of these babies that are being adopted are stolen from mothers to satisfy a particular "need" that these American couples are asking for.

Why would these couples just not adopt our American children??  Can someone please explain this to me to where it makes sense?

**********************************

Stolen Baby Found in Guatemalan Adoption System

Adoption officials said Wednesday that DNA tests indicate a Guatemalan baby reported stolen from her mother was being adopted by a U.S. couple, the first strong sign that the Central American nation's troubled adoption system relied in part on abducted children.

Authorities have long believed that children were stolen or bought to supply Guatemala's $100 million-a-year adoption industry before thousands of pending adoptions were frozen in May.

Previously, dozens of mothers reported stolen babies and at least two were found in orphanages, although they had not yet been put up for adoption.

But adoption officials revealed to The Associated Press on Wednesday that DNA tests identified toddler Esther Zulamita, who was reported stolen on March 26, 2007. The girl was in the process of being adopted to an unidentified U.S. couple.

Jaime Tecu, director of a team of experts reviewing all pending Guatemalan adoptions, said the DNA test results represent the first time officials have directly linked a baby reported stolen by its mother to the fraud plagued adoption system.

"This is the first time that we've been able to show, with irrefutable evidence, that a stolen child was put up for adoption," Tecu said.

The baby's mother, Ana Escobar, said armed men locked her in a storage closet at the family's shoe store north of Guatemala City and took the 6-month-old.

"When I got out, my daughter was gone," she told the AP in an earlier interview about the case.

She spent months searching hospitals and orphanages, looking for the child.

In May, Escobar says she was sitting in the National Adoption Council's offices, hoping to get access to the babies whose adoption cases were being reviewed. She looked up and saw a toddler who looked like her baby.

The image of the child being carried by an official haunted her, and she asked officials to see more photos. Soon she was sure the baby girl was hers.

All of the girl's papers were in order, including DNA tests showing that her birth mother was someone other than Escobar. But Escobar convinced officials to take new DNA tests.

"She was so sure that the child was hers that we agreed to search the house where the baby was kept," Tecu said.

The baby was placed with a caretaker while her adoption was pending, but Escobar convinced a Guatemalan judge in May to let her care for the child while the new DNA tests were performed.

"I can't explain how excited and happy I am," Escobar told the AP on Wednesday. "It's a miracle."

Tecu said officials will investigate the lawyers who handled the adoption, the doctor who signed the falsified DNA tests, and anyone else associated with the process.

"This was run by a mafia, and we going after them," he said.

Guatemala froze all 2,286 pending adoptions in May, and officials are reviewing each case to confirm there is no fraud.

At the same time, Guatemala is just starting to adopt babies under a new, more stringent system run by an independent adoption commission.

Before the reform, foreign couples, mostly from the U.S., paid up to $30,000 to adopt children.

The previous system was so quick and hassle-free it became the second-largest source of foreign babies to U.S. couples after China.

Funny you would post this.

Yesterday I was wondering why the Hollyweird couples would only adopt from other countries when we have so many here waiting for homes.

Exactly!!

I would love to hear what one of their answers would be.

Maybe something like..."We would like to think that we are helping a child out of poverty and somewhere where he/she can get a better life and healthcare."

Well, damn it!! Our children of American need all of that as well!

I always thought it was because in America it is harder to get thru the adoption process. It also takes a long time here. In other countries their laws are more lax

Yes, laws are more lax because they are crooked. And, I know that Americans have to be smarter than that.

Eitherway, if you really want a child, why not go through the process and help out a child here. These adopting parents will never know whether they are really getting a good healthy child or where the child actually came from.

The sad part is, that they do know that there are going to be some wrong doings involved and they don't care. All they want is the baby.

It’s chic to adopt a child in Africa or some other country. It’s not chic to adopt one here. That’s the story from Leftywood. You also have to remember that the left in Leftywood hates America, why would they want to adopt an American child?
Now so of you will say this is BS, but no, it’s the truth. Leftywood is all about being chic.

I know what you are saying about Leftywood, but, what about the "normal average" Americans who want to throw 30,000 dollars out to another country to have a child basically stolen for them.

Well, then again, I guess a "normal average" American would not have $30,000 to throw away, huh?

Aw, hon, I'm sure you know where I stand on this...

People who can afford to throw money to other countries for babies (illegal or not) want pretty perfect little babies with no known family history of neglect, drinking, drug use. They especially don't want little disabled babies.

I talked with three different adoption agencies when i was contemplating placing Little Dude up for adoption when I was pregnant. After his disability was dxd at 5 months pg, they all dropped me like hot cakes, or were quite open in telling me that he would be "in the system" (read: 'unwanted') for a long time.

And to think folks think raising an adopted child is easier...that's just crazy-talk.

I know what you mean, Mamatat. My son who passed on, was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus and life was very hard dealing with everything we went through WITH him, but, I never would have thought of giving him up for that reason. (I know that you were not giving your baby up due to that. =0))
But, I see so many children here that just looking at them, makes me want to give them whatever I can when I know that they don't have it.
But, even so, these people still don't know for sure that these babies are not sick or that the parents came from "clean" backgrounds. There is no way of them knowing that for sure.

BTW....How is Little Dude?

Aw, he's fine; may be looking at decompression this fall. But maybe not, too!

He's obsessed with the Antichrist (Barney) and likes live music, especially honky-tonk and rockabilly.

Had his first UTI...the usual, lol.

And he keeps bruising my calves by running into them. That really hurts!

Having kids is like gambling (or the Box of Chocolate sin Forrest Gump, lol): you never really know what you're going to get, and there's no guarantee that it will consistently stay that way. Kids change; life happens.

I'm still waiting on my 'normal' kids to rebel, too. I bet they'll go all conservative on me....ACK! *smile*

Cool is right - Hollyweird freaks do it for show

others do it because Hollyweird won't let them in !

Besides, when they leave them in hot cars to die, the parents won't sue them !

I guess you're right, Furbie.

Well, Mamatat..I am glad to hear that he is going good. I know that he was recently in the hospital. Yea, kids will be kids and, I am so glad that mine are grown...well, just a teenager left and that's it!!! (rebellious stage)

Do not...I repeat...do NOT send that teen to my house! LOL I'm a bad influence: dinner at the table, no Eminem or nasty/raunchy song lyrics, no concerts unless grades are straight A's...I'm just a bog ol' meanie head.

You know, my pal who fostered, then adopted 6 kids, moved to Rhode Island to get that done, and stayed because the system was more upfront about their expectations, CPS was far more on top of things regarding the kids' both parents and contact, and my friend was actually taken seriously as a parent, rather than as just another person who was taking strain off the over-burdened system. She says she felt appreciated for what she did. All those kids are hers, no doubt about it. So little of their abusive old lives or their corresponding mental illnesses shows up, it's obvious that she's the mom because she gives the love, respect and guidance they needed so much.

Yes, I know who you are talking about, Mamtat. She is a wonderful person. Too bad she has to go back to Rhode Island for some of the families to visit. I think they should come here since they would not take the kids in themselves.

And, I know these boys well!!!! LOL

I think a olt of has to with our court system and cps, , thos are formiddable things to deal with, and always requires lawyers to get anywhere, if ya ever do, nothing is ever simole or cut and dried in theis country anymore, thanks to all the lawyers running congress !!

I think it has to with it being drilled into the heads of Americans that we don't deserve all the luxuries we have and we MUST help other countries.
It's not PC to help Americans (we're the world's biggest problem). It's only politically correct to help other countries.

I think most would rather pay upfront, and be done with it, than go thru months of working with courts, lawyers and cps which takes months

Good points, Dak. Since my spouse & I were unable to have children together, we considered adoption. But then I decided if I was gonna raise any brats, they were gonna have to be my own. See, I've found that it's perfectly acceptable to tie your dog out front; people tend to frown on tying your child up in the front yard! Figured if I was going to end up abusing any children, they'd have to be my own! (Hopefully people will realize this is "tongue in cheek" stuff!)

All good points, DAK and GR.

lol.....is that sarcasm I'm hearing, Char? jk

But, it is true, it does happen more if not only, in the foreign countries. Sad that people have to resort to purchasing babies from these countries, though.

terrelmom, you gave the correct reason that so many people adopt foriegn children. My daughter has a friend that recently adopted a beautiful Chinese baby girl, and it was easier and less expensive than adopting a baby locally. They had to make several trips to China for their little girl.
The trafficking of kidnapped babies is heart-breaking.
