Any person, especially a family member who uses a deceased persons social security number should be punished harshly.  I think that it is one of the worst ways of someone gaining for their benefit.  I don't care what the excuse is.  It is bad enough that they were probably taking from them while they were alive then go on after their death and keep using their name and social security to steal from the government or any other group.

DHA former head chairwoman has resigned after an audit found that they had paid out nearly $20 million in rental assistance to social security numbers belonging to deceased people.

Written in the DMN:

According to the audit, the agency spent $167,000 on 45 clients whose Social Security numbers identified them as dead.

Over a two-year span, the agency also paid assistance for 235 clients whose Social Security numbers indicated they were dead as of April 2007.

The agency confirmed that it provided assistance on behalf of dead clients and said it has taken action on 204 possibly deceased clients identified by the federal audit and is working on recovering the funds, the newspaper reported.

Now that this DHA chairwoman has stepped down, she is being offered a $90,000.00 severence pay.

Wow!  Is all I have to say.

Excuses, excuses, excuses - is all we hear from criminals/lawyers.
Anyone using a deceased persons SS# is committing a FEDERAL FELONY. They should all go to prison (like in Arizona), live in tents and WORK at hard labor until they're repaid their debt.

the woman allowing all those ss cards to be used should also go to prison...not given a 90,000 bonus

I am with both of you. I know that SS is quick to jump on cutting off a social security number. When my son passed, it was done within 3 days. I have never bothered checking on his number. Maybe I should.

My question is, how do some of these people get the numbers? My sisters son's number was used when he was only 10 by someone (mexican, of course) to lease an apartment and now it is on his credit and the apartment complex will not remove it. Even though we have argued with them that he was only 10 when it was used.

But, like TM said, gotta go find me a job and let people steal from the company or organization and then get me some BIG BUCKS!!!

Let ya know what I land.

Luv, my SIL wanted to check my brother's SS# recently to see if anyone was using it. He passed away in '94. I tried doing it online, but since he had been reported as being deceased, it has to be done in writing along with a death certificate.

She was getting calls from a collection agency on a credit card debt just because he had the same first and last name, but not the same middle. She told them my brother was deceased but they wanted her to send a death certificate to them. She refused as she knew he had not had an account with that company.

Most people who have a stolen # buy it. I have heard they are gotten from people who are in positions to have access to records. Could be someone in a state held position.

A severance package for conducting criminal activities. Interesting. I hope her bail is 10x that. DHA and DISD have huge leadership problems, especially with continued scams, cons, theft, etc. The DHA chairperson may be stepping down (with a nice serverance package) it's about time the city boots out the head of DISD.

If they would go through programs such as housing, WIC, ADFC and such and try to compare the social security numbers of the children and parents against the existing database, I can guarantee there would be millions in overpayment. A lady in front of me had two Texas welfare cards. While I am clipping coupons and buying meat from the markdown bin, she had enough food for an army. And paid nothing. And with all the bling she had on and the almost new SUV she was driving, I have to wonder who is assessing these folks as poor?

Hmmmm....seems like this was more of an interesting topic when it was an illegal using a deceased persons ss#. lol (jk)

But, seriously, there were more people talking about that then finding out that one of our own has let more than one get away with it causing us millions of our tax dollars. I mean, where do people think this money comes from to house the "needy"?

I would seriously be worried about a situation like this.

And, you are so right, xsinister....there are MAJOR problems with all of Dallas government offices!

What I don't understand is the SS# belonging to the deceased being used.
For instance, Person A dies in 1965. Death index shows a listing including SS#
Person B starts using above mentioned SS# in 2008 when they filed taxes.

Why does a warning not show up that Person A died meaning SS# should not be being used?
I mean, if that happened, then the IRS could immediately move in and arrest the person using the # since an address is used when filing taxes.

Although I like being able to verify genealogy records with the use of the death index, not so sure the old numbers should be so readily available to just everyone.
