Three years later, we, our own cities, are still trying to recooperate from all the devastation that was brought to us because of Hurricane Katrina.

Now, I am sitting here talking to my sister and asking, what is going to happen this time with Gustav?

I have been keeping up with this storm/hurricane myself because I know that we will go through the same thing again as we did with Katrin victims.

I remember when I volunteered to feed the "victims" that were staying at a large hotel in Arlington.  We worked hard, the church, to get good meals together for these people.  But, all we got was complaints.  That they did not like the food because it was not what they ate.

Well, I took it upon myself to fix a whole meal of things they said they liked.  That evening, when I went to serve it, I only had 4 families come down and eat.  The rest, were coming in on buses with fast food and bags and bags from the mall.

Seems, that they had started to receive their "victim money" and were enjoying spending it where they shouldn't have been.

I remember hearing all the awful stories from many people all around Dallas County about how these people acted and what they did with the money or assistance that was given to them.  I remember the huge fight that the New Orleans kids caused in the Grand Prairie high school against the  kids from here.

Is this what we have to look forward to again?

I am praying that we are not.

Houston has closed the Astrodome.  It will not be used to house anyone.

The Reunion Arena is out of the question.

And, the worst is...that alot of these people from New Orleans are already being given warnings that they might have to evacuate but, alot are still sitting and "waiting it out".

Did you not learn your lesson the first time?

God help us.  We don't need this again.  We are still trying to recooperate ourselves.

IF there were another big hurricane to hit N.O., it would be much different - there's a REPUBLICAN Gov. in charge, Governor Bobby Jindal. And if Texas were to help, we could do so successfully and well, as before.

Of course, that failure, Nagin, got re-elected Mayor... but that was by their (dumb) choice.

I don't think it makes a difference who is running what.

It is the people's choice as to whether or not evacuate on time.

Lots are saying, as before, we will wait it out. They want to see if the levee will hold.

And, we did not do successfully the last time.

It was horrible. And, it still is.

Maybe they need to take a lesson from the Midwest flood victims and take responsibility for themselves. You didn't hear of any of this crap going on with them.

The point was, the Dem Governor refused to ALLOW FEMA to come in and offer assistance. Jindal wouldn't do that. He could ORDER an evacuation, that either of the others did.
Who's in charge makes a DIFFERENCE - the reason we need informed voters!

They are probably already planning on which stores to loot, and what they will buy with the free debit card ....

He has already told everyone that the possiblity is there and started a list of people that can sign up for transportation out. But, only 8,000.

Still, the problem is that even if it was only 3 days before Katrina hit that they were told to get out, they didn't.

Like they said before....they can't be forced to leave their homes.

Many residents hadn't yet made a decision about leaving. Lawson "Sonny" Brannan, a construction company owner, was busy renovating a client's home Wednesday, just blocks from where a levee was breached in the Lakeview neighborhood. A wall of water up to 15 feet deep wiped out the home.

Brannan calmly went about his business, but nonetheless kept a watchful eye on the weather.

"I'm not going to worry about it until I see it in the Gulf," he said. "Then I'll make my decisions."

IMO....I would leave now and be set somewhere where I will not have to deal with being stuck on the freeway and possible getting caught up in it in any way.

My other question is...."how did we do successfully before?"

We had so many convicts living here hurting people who were trying to help.

Stealing, fighting, ruined homes where the victims stayed and did not want to leave after a year of free rent, etc.

Where was the success?

I was living in Houston at the time Katrina came through and then Rita after that. Katrina was a disaster to Houston, not because of weather damage, but the influx of people coming into Houston from New Orleans. The Astrodome was used to house folks and volunteers lined up to help out. Made me proud of my fellow Houstonians but then it angered me to see the way they were treated by these "guests". I was with the Sheriff's Dept and we were assigned to work the Astrodome. Believe me, the shifts there were some of the most trying with having to deal with the New Orleans folks. Governor Jindal has already ordered mandatory assisted evacuations. Good to see someone in charge that knows what they're doing.

Yes, I just wish the people of New Orleans felt the same way.

Don't wait til the last minute.

I remember all the bad things that Houston went through because of the "visitors". I don't really think any one city who took them in got appreciation.

I know that there were a few houses that a church here in Dallas let some families stay in. Almost 2 years later, there were still trying to get them to either pay rent or move out. Well, they moved. But, destroyed the houses. They threw food allover the walls and destroyed furniture that was not theirs and the kitchen appliances were all broken.

Sad.....but, true.

I saw it first hand in Houston and many of them were nothing less than savages.

My wife works at a motel, rather nice one, that had Katrina victims staying there. She discribed them as slovenly, low life, pigs, and hopes they never come back.

Prostituting, drugs, loud music, loitering, etc.

The citizens of NO were and maybe still are horrible people. Am I judging? Yes, with proof. Sue me.

If the good people of Dallas were run out by a tornado, I have no doubt these stories would be different. Dallasites, by and large, are a civil and respectful bunch.
