Here's the original blog.  I had not heard of this situation until this morning, and I'm not sure if the OP has seen any resolution yet.

Suffice it to say, Steak & Shake in Chicago refused to serve a deaf woman.  They refused to even accommodate her at all. Who was waiting on her? The manager of the restaurant.  Apparently Steak & Shake thinks that customers with disabilities aren't worth as much as those with none.  Too bad, because my family is huge, and so is the disabled community of which we are a part.

No moe Steak & Shake for us, and we hope you'll join us.  I'll post more when I find out about any official boycotts or contact campaigns against S&S.

Really? Surely there's part of the story missing.

Either way, Steak and Shake is overrated and blows.

What deaf person goes through the drive thru to begin with?

Sorry...Ignorant actions = ignorant results

And yes, S&S blows hard!!! Ewwww...

I happen to like their side by side shakes....preferably banana and chocolate...but there is no excuse for treating a customer that way.....any customer....

Ted, you are right...

But, demanding a witch hunt on a business because of this is wrong.

If I were deaf, I would never get my food from a drive thru.

Let's think about that for a minute...

Sorry, my brother is deaf. I grew up around this, so I am not just shooting from the hip here.

Common sense is dead!!!

I specifically despise the banana shake because it tastes like laffy taffy.

I still think there's something missing. Maybe she was a B about it and they just didn't want to help her.

She should have just gone inside.

Anyone who has gone through the drive thru knows as a hearing person you can barely understand the person on the other end.

To attempt it as a deaf person?

OK, I am done...This strikes a nerve with me...

Another example of someone wanting something for nothing.

Got people on that blog saying she should be "compensated".

PLEASE...

Sal....it reminds me more of those "banana fudgecicle" things....i know its a totally artificial flavoring kinda thing, but i like it....

back on topic....its hard to believe that this hasn't happened to her before....at some other place....but i agree with the going inside thing....if she really wanted to make it easier for herself and everyone else, just write your order down on a piece of paper and hand it to the counter person inside.....I had a deaf customer do this for me before....it was no big deal...

I agree with Sal 100% My sister is deaf and I have seen her raise a ruckus when she doesn't get her way. I too believe there is more to the story.

By the way, I don't like their food either but their shakes are smokin' good!

I would say that knowing you couldn't hear the person at the window, it would be a better choice to go inside. Even if someone had been literate in American Sign Language, they wouldn't be able to help you over the intercom-that's just common sense. Having said that, both my oldest kids are fluent in American Sign and have used it in their jobs at just such a location. Please consider that this is also a security measure. Most places won't allow walk up traffic because a cashier at the window can be held up by someone. They probably could have been more cordial, but that's a two way street.

from the original blog , apparently the person could hear enough to hold a conversation at the window and only complains about the speaker .

she should join the crowd , half the time i can't understand the speaker either , put my order in , drive up and check what they give me anyway cuz most of the time they get it wrong even if you hear them right

1) Lets say the story told is the eact truth

2) Why discriminate against the whole company because of one persons ignorance
thats like CONDEMNING A WHOLE RACE OF PEOPLE FOR THE MISTAKES OF SOME

3) I doubt the company policy is DONT SERVE DEAF PEOPLE

4) the worker might be fired but WILL SURELY END UP AS A GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE

Im thinking myself, that there is two sides of the story, and this is only one side of it. BOYCOTT??? ROFLMAO...Thats tooo funny. They wont miss you I am sure...kinda like the Irving boycott....it affected who??? Try bocycotting Starbucks ....nothing can justify the treehugging price gouging going on there...they are good, but not that damn good...."but its a peacful place to meet friends"....pffffffft blow me.

This story sounds really made up to me. Any deaf person knows they can't hear, so they'd not go through a drive through. Is the original poster a "former" employee of S&S?

Thirty years ago I worked at the Coca Cola Bottling Company. Every week, without fail, a mad consumer would come in complaining that his wife or kid had swallowed some glass, a toothpick, a mouse, or some other item, from one of our bottles. He would shout "we are getting an attorney". This stuff happens evry day on a non-stop basis. people are out for some easy money. This incident described above sounds like a very bogus complaint. It is hard to understand what is being said at those drive-ups. Some of those speakers are nothing but static noise ! But this lady needs to get a grip on life, and get rid of the chip on her shoulder.

Instead of indicting the deaf woman, consider that she can read lips. She couldn't use the speaker, because it has no lips! Many hearing-impaired people function very well because they can read lips. She used the drive through for the same reason as any of us, convenience. She said the drive through was empty so she was not causing any traffic delay initially. It was the stubborn refusal of the manager to make an exception to policy that caused the delay.

Thank you, Logic! that's my point exactly! The rest of us take for granted that we can have the same conveniences for which disabled people have to fight. For the manager to insist that she go back through and re-order is beyond asinine: it was bullying, degrading and prejudiced against her because of her disability (note that I didn't go off on a tangent & say "because she's a woman" or any of that...) he owed her the common decency of treating her as a customer who pays his bills. Common courtesy goes a long way...this reflects the sorry state of workers more than the 'demanding' nature of a customer whose disability wasn't accommodated.

Then again, if it were me, I'd drag my kids inside the store and show them what behavior of them I never expect to see, simply by showing them the manager's behavior.

I can't imagine how that would have gone down if it were my family with our kid in a wheelchair: are we not entitled to the treatment that enables my child to eat in public with the rest of society (HC parking spots, ramps, lower tables, etc)? Should we just stay at home so that we don't 'inconvenience' those of you who just can't possibly be bothered with the possible delay it might cause those around us?I can only hope you don't suffer paralysis, hearing loss, MS or ay other debilitating illness in the future. Sure would bite to have someone actually act human and not robotic toward a customer...

Looks like most of you are living 'in the land of the pretty people' or something. Do they not have disabled folks anywhere else, or are you all just blind to it, h

Fierce mama bear. Committed to raising responsible, thoughtful, compassionate children. I fall squarely between conservative and liberal, and that's fine with me. I'm a married mama with a bunch of kids. I own Cherry Canary Clips and sell handmade flower hair clips and punk rock/pinup hair bows. I own a shop at Etsy and my products can now be found at Baby Britches in Denton, as well as at The Clandestine Project's store in Denton.

If I didn't laugh...life would be scary.
