It's that time of year again. We will begin to hear stories of babies, toddlers and dogs being left in hot cars to die. It can be abuse, neglect or just plain stupidity but it will happen.
Harried parents with multiple children somehow lose count and babies die. Don't ask me how but it does happen. A few years ago I chanced upon a woman who had locked her baby and her keys in the car. She was hysterical and the baby was screaming and it was August. She was afraid to break the window because her husband would be mad. Luckily, the fire department didn't care if her husband was mad.
I have stood in crowded stores and announced that unless the owner of whatever car with the dying dogs in it appeared I was breaking their window and calling the cops.. Not too surprisingly thirty years in a classroom has given me a voice that carries very well in public. Someone will usually slink by and drive car and dog away. I have only had to break two windows , the police, many of whom I taught ,are very understanding.
So my friends, remember to check the back seat for baby and leave the puppies at home. You never know when I might leave Waxahachie.
