This election is getting  uglier by the day. As much as people can and will say color is not an issue in the end it will be the big issue. There are those who will vote for Barack because he is Black , there are those who note for McCain because Barack is Black. I personally will not vote Republican ever. But I know a great many older Americans , some life long Democrats who will vote for McCain because of race. There are days I wish we were all just beige it would make like much easier.

There are those who will vote based on such things as race or religion. Look at the flak Kennedy got for being Catholic or that Romney is getting due to his Mormon faith. People pick on such shallow things to latch on when they vote, but the main issues they should be considering is the issues. And right now, if you choose not to support Obama, you in danger of being labeled racist. It's just a name game worthy of the schoolyard.

UCant, that is the age-old hypocrisy of being a liberal: Never look outside the Democratic Party for answers to government issues.

A better way to denote this phenomena is the supposed freedom of speech that liberals always claim such affection for: The "Fairness Doctrine" is a case in point.

Funny, I have never considered myself locked into voting for someone strictly based on party affiliation. However, based on Speaker Pelosi's emphatic "NO! Never!" to a vote on drilling, I have decided that until such vote is allowed in the House, I will not vote for a Democrat running for any national seat. The fact is, the "People's House" under Pelosi resembles the Kremlin under Stalin.

And I will never vote for a Democrat again, because they are the party of socialism, who wishes nothing more than big government power for themselves and to destroy free capitalist country that we were. Communism is a bad thing and sadly for BHO, one of his MENTORS IS a well known communist. Add that to his buddy's Rev. Wright, etc., Obam is a BAD DEAL.

p.s. and I don't see anything "ugly". THIS is what elections are... disagreements. Bi-partisan is a foolish... KNOW what you believe in and stand by it. That's what ppl are elected on - their beliefs.
I don't care what color Barack is - he's BAD for the country, with his communist leanings. HE'S the one that keeps playing the race card. Desperate.

I would not consider one's religion a shallow thing. I think your religion, or lack of, is VERY important. I don't have to agree with your choice of religion, but having one is better than none. Islam? Would I want someone who is Islamic? What about an Athiest? Or perhaps Scientologist. Yes, just imagine our President being sworn in and placing his hand on a Koran, or on nothing.
I think race has an important role in any election as well. I too, wish we were all the same...same color, same language etc. But we are not. But I think most importantly is the individual. One can overlook race and religious differences if the candidate is a good person, qualified for the job. I don't care what color he is. However, if there was a black man or a hispanic man/woman running, and all they talked about were affirmative action, civil rights etc...yep, i'd be concerned about his race and his agenda.
My problem with Obama is he wants it both ways. Barry wants to be white, and reminds everyone his mom was white. but when he is talking to majority black crowd, he's black. He is sounding more like a wolf in sheep's clothing if you ask me now.

I hadn't brought in religion . As I recall we have a separation of church and state. I do want morality but I am seeing a dismaying lack in either candidate. We have had a great many presidents sworn, hand on the Bible who proved to be less than moral., RIchard Nixon comes to mind as does Bill Clinton. At this point, in this race, it is win at any cost. What I hate is that race will separate this nation. I had hoped that here at the beginning of the 31st century we were past that.

I think race has very little to do with people's decisions to vote against Obama. Maybe in the sticks of Alabama where folks don't have teeth and still use the term "colored". By the way, that is a very small percentage of the voting population.

Maybe those Democrats voting for McCain don't want to chance the inexperience of Obama and the possible dire consequences his election may precipitate.

Check this out (and I'm sure someone will somehow gripe about how this site is funded...

VoteSmart

Each candidate's voting records are listed.

Look at that and you'll see why both Momcat and I are frustrated this election season: neither candidate likes kids, farmers or really the idea of scheduling campaigning around working. They should be required to show up for work and at the very least vote.

Race will always be a factor as long as blacks continue to scream about something neither you nor I had anything to do with.

This is why I am against reparations. Why would I pay money for slaves I never owned to someone who was never a slave? You liberals must stay high.

No such thing as separation of church and state momcat54. Perhaps it exist in Marxist doctrine, but you won't find it anywhere in our constitution, sorry.

Senator Obama, not Senator McCain, keeps injecting race into the election process. I believe Senator Obama tries to get voters to focus on racial issues in order to avoid having to explain his political positions, which, at best, are shallow.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof (First Amendment). This means that government cannot create a State sponsored religion. This does not mean that religious people are prohibited from participating in the affairs of government.
