I literally spit my orange juice out when I heard this one. DISD has lost it's collective mind. This is ridiculous!!!!! You might as well just give everyone a C and get it over with.  Students need to be held accountable for their actions or lack thereof . Do overs if you fail a test? . Missing assignments, no homework Holy Carp  . Why not just give everyone the TAKS test September 1st and call it a day. If they pass they've graduated high school . This is just encouraging a nation of mediocrity, Why study ,why work, why try to excel! ARGHHHHH

Wow, you must have been schooled in the olden days to know how to spell mediocrity...or even know what it means! LOL!

Isn't it a shame that one can no longer be recognized for excellence. Only the "unexcellent" can be recognized for being mediocre.

Somehow, I don't think that is what this nation was founded upon; how sad.

Sheeeeeeesh! This DISD is so absurd! There is a school in Irving called the Academy and this school teaches kids what they need to know and how to get a good job. The have classes on different job fields and I was very impressed when we put our daughters name in "the lottery". Unfortunately, she didnt get picked. So she spent her last (sophomore) year at IHS (Irving HS) learning stuff that will be of little to no use to her in the real world. I would like to see schools teaching kids on how to manage money, bank accounts, credit cards, Learn about their credit score and their FICO score as to how it effects them. I didnt know about these things until my mid 30's. Then it took a long time to get my crap back in order. The importance of have insurance and warranties. The value of following through a task, assignment, or a controversy. Teach the kids about frivilous law suits...sheeesh just teach the kids about the law! But start off teaching the kids about consideration, respect, and courtesy torwards others. If this were to happen, I think this world...uhhh city would be a better place to live.
By the way, I am running for President...lol

Children do need to be prepared for the free world. However, they also need to learn about literature, science, biology the arts. This makes for a well rounded human being. I do wish we had more actual job training and accepted the fact that not everyone is college material. I would love to see more classes in technology, carpentry, welding, all real world skills. TAKS has nothing to do with the real world.
The idea of lowering the bar and letting students just get a passing grade for showing up is absurd. I am an old school teacher and this goes against everything I believe in and negates everything I tried to do in my thirty one years in the classroom.

I agree.

Raise the standard, raise the bar, rasie expectations from these student... don't lower. That's what you'll get.

While the public reason for this is to encourage kids to try, in reality I am betting it has far more to do with parents complaining about the students athletes who didn't pass, but were still allowed to play at a DISD high school. Too many parents put the extras first. They don't want their kids held to any standards and when their kids fail, they go to court. The man who turned in the coaches is out of a job in the DISD. What does that say about the job security of teachers who won't budge on grades? This is why I quit teaching the first time around 20 years ago. Any parent who thinks this is a good thing is a fool.

Funny how when I was in high school we had less classes, but we had high standards. We learned about music, art, our culture, what makes us who we are. And we learned about math, science, history and how to write. Now kids don't even know how to spell. Seriously, who are these parents fooling when they demand basic course work but don't want anything else. We have to inspire kids beyond the average. BTW, all economics classes teach money handling and credit card use as part of the deal.

People...check with the Texas Board of Education.

This is a policy that has BEEN in effect. The schools just did not let the parents and other know about it.

I found out about it last year from a school councelor.

Well, the way I see it, so long as your child is not in "the loop" of the "slacking" kids, it should not matter to those what other kids do and don't do.

This policy is for ALL kids, not just the "slackers".

Sometimes circumstances fall on some that need more time.

a good classroom teacher knows and understands circumstances and makes allowances. They also know who is making an effort and who does not give a a flying freak, Try and I will work with you , don't try and I will watch you drown in 0's then fail your butt without an ounce of remorse.

i am a student at a D.I.S.D. school, im mels daughter, and im a student athlete who has a 4.0 average. i think it is unfair for us kids who do our work and turn our assignments in ON TIME. then the next day watch the teacher give a student a "pat on the back" for turning their assignments in late. I don't get. the whole "it's okay to turn work in a day late" is stupid, or how bout this one if you fail a test you fail NO REDOS!

I saw this kinda junk coming when I went to a nephew's soccer game back in the mid 90s. The league was the FFPSL which stood for "Fun, Fair and Positive Soccer League". *puking noises* Anyway, they didn't keep score, everyone got a chance to play and at the end of the season every one got 1st place trophies! WEEEEEEE! Gimme a break. Now these same kids who were given these things and not taught to fight or persevere or overcome adversity are struggling to make it in school and life. Didn't make the team? Guess what, you tried harder to make it next year. Came in last during the race? You trained so that you did better. We definitely haven't helped these kids with all this coddling. Hopefully some eyes will be open with more news like this out there.

Exactly, Damage. This is the liberal agenda and political correctness in action.

This is one of the many reasons conservatives have clammered for vouchers for so long. No one who cares would want their kid in DISD. When I graduated from IISD standards were still high. Thank God! If you think I'm an idiot now...just think what I could have been!
