It was mildly funny, but it was against school policy. Therefore, they deserve the punishment they got. That is what is wrong with our justice system now. Deals are worked and people get a slap on the wrist and do not learn. Perhaps this will be and example to discourage others from doing something that could be more serious.

I saw this on the news this am, and they asked the one boy's father if he knew about this before hand , and he just starting smiling saying yesssss. I find it hard that a parent would give their child the 'OK' on this. His arse should be right beside his son for the entire 16 hours.
Geeeesh Parents, quit trying be buddies to your kids, and start being Parents. Granted it may not be as much fun, but the kids need you to PARENT!!!!

Danno, I agree. Why do parents try to be friends to their kids ? That is wrong. The biggest problem with kids today are the parents. Stupid parents breed stupid kids ! These kids deserve what they got, and the parents should be held liable, even fined.

This will be another long debate!!

They over reacted suspend the boys or something to that matter but not jail.

As for the parents I would have said "OK" but your going to pay for it. And believe me I am not easy on my children. They will tell you that.

I think it was all done as harmless fun but turned out bad for them. The school district was adamant about pressing charges.A stern warning and suspension would have been sufficient in my book.Think back to when we were all younger and did things similar to this in our own schools....it was a harmless prank...and everyone involved will look back on it someday and laugh about it.The gorilla passing up the bananna....thats golden! LOL
Wheres everyones sense of humor at nowadays?

Total over reaction! Come on people! Let's save jail for the real criminals. The school district should have handled this on their own. Ask your self this - was anyone hurt? Was there any real crime? It was trespassing and during a game at that. Everyone who was at the game could see them. It wasn't like they damaged property. Every high school senior wants to pull a prank on their high school and this was harmless.

We have to hold kids to a high standard and participate in them accepting the consequences they face.

Really Taco? Think back a few years to when kids were streaking during football games and through the halls of their schools and were getting in school suspension at the worst.

Wait just a minute. Did any of you ever take part in school pranks?

These two kids harmed absolutely no one. Moreover, I'd bet every kid in that school is still laughing and buzzing about it. I'd bet it boosted morale as well.

Are we as a society so stringent that we'll actually jail people for a harmless prank?

Perhaps now that these young men have had the experience of jail, they will think about lots of more serious things that could land them there again in the future. Perhaps that is the lesson the school is trying to teach. If so, good for them.

Years ago, kids would get in trouble and the parents would let them spend the night in jail instead of running down to bail them out because they were crying buckets of tears.

And their experience may go the other way, embitter them, and show them how we trivilize the law with many inconsistencies like this one.

My brother killed a man who broke into my mother's home in Ohio in the 80's. He spent 30 minutes in jail and never went back in again.

it seems a law suit precipitated this, if that's the case, school officials were upholding this to remind everyone why this rule or law is in place . I can very well understand why that rule is there, mayn of the laws we now have, were initiated becuz of expensive lawsuits over unforseen circumstances , unfortunately it happens and we all must live under those rules or laws !

Well, CBW, he shot the guy from a bedroom with a rifle and got the guy between the eyes. So "they" tried to read something into that much like a lot of bloggers do here when you say something.

Anyway, stunts like the one these two played were common when I went to school and they weren't even punished!

Methinks those from the Gestapo doth protest too much.

You're absolutely right, momcat. I empathize with them because I was quite a prankster in school. The worst damage I ever did in all my years pulling pranks was spit in a girls eye accidentally. For that I was kicked off the bus for the entire year but developed muscular legs as a result. It's all good!
