RENTON, Wash. (AP) - The organization that oversees high school sports in Washington is considering more specific rules for fans that could ban booing and offensive chants.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is drafting guidelines to crack down on negative conduct.

The association director Mike Colbrese blames rude fans for the dwindling number of people who want to be coaches and officials.

He says the guidelines will remind fans to cheer for their team, not against the other.

                                   *****************************

Next thing you know, We'll have to carry decibel monitors so our cheers do not exceed a certain prescribed level so as not to injure the athletes ears.

Give me a break!

Even I have to admit (being a big fan of banning all sorts of stuff), this is silly.

You might find it fascinating to learn that a number of athletic associations have banned booing negative chants and cheers several years back.

They say "Cheer FOR, Not AGAINST", especially at the high school level and lower.

There was a cheer that was led by a student body section at a high school game that went:

"Seven miles North there's a place 2 X 4.

Some of the people in it are nothing but a bore.

Oh they brag about the green and they brag about the fight, but Spaulding's got the team that's going to win this fight".

The Prinipal of that school's student body identified at least a dozen of the students involved in the negative cheer and not only kicked them out of the gym, he suspended them from school for three days!

The very next game, all of the student body showed up with newspapers and when it was time to cheer, they opened the papers up in front of their faces. It was hysterically funny. Even the Principal laughed.

All that happened at about this time of year in 1963. Just a scant 44 years back....

That's funny, KK.

Wish I could have seen that, but I'll bet no one has any 8mm film of it.

Everything old becomes new again. So now it's time to "boycott the boo" again.

It's always the 'PC' crowed, banning and making laws against normal activity. Fools seem to have taken over!

It was pretty funny, mykidz. I remember they had a front-page picture in the local paper, showing the "newspaper" section. It looked like one giant newspaper. :)) I've never heard that anyone had movies of it all...those movie cameras were for rich folks and there weren't many of those around.

In '68 out high school football team (The Artesians) were playing the Panthers for the conference showdown. Several of us made a huge mural that we hung from the top of the school building that read "Artesian Water is stronger than Panther Pee. About an hour before the game the principal found me and told me to remove the word "Pee" from the sign. I promised I would and climbed a ladder while he watched and I cut out the word Pee out in the shape of a "P". The principal laughed and said O.K!
