You know, on a daily basis, we drive past all the big 18 wheelers and cut them off. We don't care if they are there or where they are going or what they are hauling. All we care about is getting to where we need to get to. I used to think like that all the time before I became a security officer at a trucking terminal. Not a truck stop, a truck terminal. Big difference. We really take for granted that they are they and that they keep things on the move and deliver everything we need on a day to day schedual. Two years ago, I met and fell deeply in love with a trucker and he told me and showed me the ways of a truck driver on the road. I was very suprised to see and learn all the things that they must endure during a day of driving. We got engaged and he is still hauling what he is told to haul. The drivers of cars and other POV'S (personal occupancy vehicles) are actually very rude to truckers because they don't know the rules of the road toward truckers. Truck drivers do not get enough recognition like they should. If it wasn't for them, America would cease to move as fast as it does if at all. Thanks to them, we have all the things we need to keep our day going on a day to day basis. So next time you see a truck driver be him/her in a small local truck or an OTR (over the road) truck, just tell them Thank you for what they do. They drive 10-14 hrs in any given day. They need to hear some thanks. I let my man know that I appreciate what he does daily! Just by saying thank you can make a very big difference! They need to hear it and see it on the road! Be careful and watch out for them as they will watch out for you!

I agree with you Nived23. Every time there is an accident and an 18 wheeler is involved, people often think it's the big truck is at fault.

Truth is, many times the person responsible isn't even in all the wreckage. That's cause time and time again people are always in a hurry to get to where they are going and they can't stand to be behind a big truck so they rush around them and sometimes cutting too close to the nose of the truck, causing the trucker to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision and causing the trucks to jack knife.

Big trucks can cause alot of damage when involved in a wreck. I use to work for the Texas Dept. of Transportaion. I saw many wrecks involving 18 wheelers. Most of the wrecks were caused by being cut off and trying to avoid hitting the car cutting them off. The truck loses control and hits cars in other lanes and the punk in a hurry keeps going after causing a major wreck. Dash board cameras ought to be installed in the dash of trucks. Truckers rock!!!

Packer, I also worked for TxDot. I have seen many accidents that were caused by irresponsible truckers. I have seen truckers maul cars, kill people, run cars off of the road, and countless other things. They destroy roads, signs, bridge rails, and the list goes on and on. There are a great many truckers who need to find another line of work. There are also many very fine truckers. I have to say, over all, truckers are far better drivers than the general driving public. People in cars are dangerous.

I have a couple of male cousins who are truckers, and they complain all of the time about how inconsiderate drivers are.

I get very nervous driving past those big 18 wheelers, especially in the rain! OMG! They splash water on your windshield and you are totally blinded! It is VERY scary!

I hate to rain on this parade, but most fatality accidents involving trucks are rockhaulers. And most of the drivers involved are either unlicensed or have a score of incidents against their record. My dad used to work selling trucking contracts. They had a fund to cover fines. And frankly, anyone who has driven I35E has seen trucks come into the Denton area going way over the speed limit. I have had several instances where truckers nearly ran me off the road. So if you want respect, start policing your own.

I've been married to two truck drivers ans both told e (plus others) that if they see a wreck about to happen, make it good. For insurance. However some of them tend to drive as if they are gods or srew with the logs..
I agree about ppl cutting them off tho. It takes a bit to stop one of those big boys. Ppl don't understand that sometimes and blame the trucker.

The worst, most ill-mannered, inconsiderate, rude drivers live in Texas. It’s been a long time since I ran interstate but when do I get out, I still see the same old things. Drivers’ speed-up when you turn on your signals and block you from changing lanes. When you see a sign saying left lane ends 2 miles ahead you should start trying to move to the right ASAP, When you try to force your way in to traffic 30 feet before you run out of road you are risking road rage, you might run into some IDIOT as rude as you are, and when you hit each other, you block everyone else while waiting for the cops to arrive. You can never tell you might even cause a drive by shooting when someone who has been stuck in traffic for 30 minutes to an hour or two loose it. I think my favorite is the ILL-MANNERED IDIOT who will pass you when you are running 71 in a 70 zone then immediately slam on their brakes and turn left and not even signal, if your in a fully loaded 18 wheeler that can’t stop on a dime you don’t know what to do _ _ _ _ !! or go blind. Afterwards while trying to scrape you cargo off the front of your trailer you get mad at yourself for not making a 4-wheeler your new bumper sticker. You could paint a car on your door with a circle and X thru it. You also hope if it happens again you think quicker than you act and don’t even brake……….. THINK ABOUT IT. This is not an isolated incident. I would also like to say that when you make a left off Hwy 51 onto Hwy 114 , the left lane is marked for you to stay in until you can safely merge, it a fact that will save lives. I drove west coast

Continued
I drove to the west coast for almost 10 years….. No accidents, 1 ticket speeding and ruined 5 - 55gal. Barrels of grease and had to replace two very expensive wooden panels and insulation in the front of the trailer. Also cost $500.00 to have trailer cleaned all because a stupid 4-wheeler ran a red light and I stopped before I hit him, I was able to stop in time because I knew he wasn’t going to stop, I have regretted many times not just slowing enough to total his car and not hurt him too bad.

I had such a phobia of big rigs that I refused to ever drive into the metroplex. If we just HAD to go, then I made someone else drive and I kept my eyes shut the entire time. My anxiety level would be through the roof the entire time that we were there.
Six years ago, we moved to Wise County. You want to talk about anxiety!!!! Needless to say, I have had no choice but to conquer my fears and simply pay attention. I think Wise County has the biggest ratio of fatal truck involved accidents than anywhere else.
I personally know a lot of truckers with the attitudes such as "they'll have to move over because I'm bigger" or "I'll make them move".
But I've also heard a lot of POV drivers complaining about trucks and being just as nasty and rude.
I believe if the majority of POV drivers would stop and realize what the trucks are on the roads for (to deliver our goods) and learn to be a little more patient, then we could all share the roads equally and safely.

I have a hubby who drives trucks for a living. Thank God he gets to come home every night. But it is horrible out there. There are always people in POVs who just dont care about anything other than their own time and schedule. Trucker dont get the recognition that they deserve. It is alot of work having to get those huge trucks up and down the highway. Some of the longest trailors are 59 feet long!!!You try making a right turn with a truck that is longer than 70 feet!!! My hubby comes home stressed all the time because people can be considerate and courteous to truck drivers. Since I know how they feel, I always try to be courteous to truck drivers. Give them plenty of room. Stop well before the stop sign if they are turning toward you. Dont drive in their blind spot. Dont get in front of them until you can see both headlights in your rearview. I think if people driving POVs would follow these simple rules, there would be a lot fewer accidents involoving 18 wheelers. But I dont guess that people will be nice to truckers any more than they are going to be nice to other people driving POVs. It is a mad house on the road. I live in a small town and dont drive in Dallas unless it is absolutely necessary. Good luck out there everyone. Be kind to truck drivers.

I am also married to a driver. Before we had children I would ride with him all over the country, and saw first hand how rude people can be.
Its really no different than driving your own vehicle and seeing the idiots driving, its just in an 18 wheeler thats loaded, weighing in at 50k pounds and more, its a lot more dangerous.
Truckers are the back bone of our country and deserve respect

There are good truck drivers and poor truck drivers. In fact, if anything, thanks to Bush and this NAFTA mess, there will be MORE incapable truck drivers roaring through Texas.

My husband has been a truck driver for over 25 years. And I have rode on many trips and have had first hand accounts of being cut off, changing lanes at the last minute, etc. Please understand that when you have 50-75,000 pounds traveling at 60-65mph you can not just stop at the last minute. Please be considerate of this guys because they have families at home just like you and we want htem safe. But there are some "king of the roads" that think because they are bigger they can take over. SHAME ON THEM!!!!! to all truckers and families as you go out GOD BLESS you and I will keep you guys always in my prayers!

You're correct, moka - I agree 100%. If it wasn't for truckers, we'd all wouldn't have the nice things available in stores!

It is not only truckers that get cut off. I drive a motor home with a vehicle in tow, and I get cut off everytime that I am on the roadway. I retired from the Dallas Police Department, and have worked many a wreck that involved a vehicle being cut off or people running red lights and other infractions. I had pride when I was on the department, not only for the department, but my fellow officers as well. I have been next to squad cars, during this new era, when someone runs a red light and the officer just looks away. Is he on a call or is it too hot to get out of his vehicle?
Enough said on that subject, please, everyone slow down and be more courteous of the other drivers. The life you save maybe a mother, father, husband, wife, sister, brother, and the list can go on and on. The other safe driver may be the one that saved your life.

I agree nived23. Wrecks involving big rigs are more often than not caused by cars that make unsafe lane changes while in moderate to heavy traffic. The one part of the trucking industry that I would like to see handled better is the upkeep of the trailers! Just last week I saw a truck in the high five on the side of the road that was hauling huge rolls of paper. In this case, the side of the trailer simply fell away from the bottom and all the huge rolls went tumbling out. That's something that truck drivers have no control over and that's no fun. It also could have been much worse and is in many cases.
