I was up at the CRACK OF DAWN!!! (4:30a) and heard about a girl in Junior High getting suspended for wearing perfume and getting suspended for this because her teacher says she has "allergies". I don't understand why the girl was suspended. I think the teacher should had told her to go wash it off and come back to her seat. Not get suspended. I can't help but roll my eyes on this one. She was allowed back to school to take a test but then had to go back home when it was done or whatever. What happened to the days where a kid would get  suspended for a fight or bringing a weapon to school? Has it now come to being suspended for simply wearing perfume? What about the boys who are just starting to shave? They have to put on after shave and that has a scent to it. Plus when I was in Junior High, everyone wore some kind of smell good to SMELL GOOD. The girls wore little make up and lip gloss. I mean, keep the kids who are threatening to bring a gun to school and shoot up everybody and send the kid who wore perfume home. This doesn't make any damn "scents" to me. Sound off if you agree with me! If this is going to be the case of things to come for schools, then when I have kids, then I will not send them to public schools. I will home school them. This is silly. Let me know your thoughts...

I used to get severe migraine headaches from some perfumes so I understand the "ban" but suspension...I don't think so...I also heard that report at 4:30 this morning and I believe if I was awake enough to remember she had been warned previously...but this does not seem to warrant a suspension...unless there was some kind of confrontation..I worked in an office just a few years ago and we were not "forbidden" but it was suggested that we limit our "smell good use" Just maybe..the young girl was "overdosing" to the max..I too remember when it was so exciting to be grown up enough to "wear perfume"

Hey dawn, Thanx for speaking up! I do agree with you however I some times get slight headachs from guys walking in the store who wear the stinkiest of colognes. But I do agree with you, love. I don't think I was awake enough to hear the part that she was previously warned. I was still pretty groggy. zzzz... Hey thnx again for putting in your 2 "scents". ;-)

Doesn't' make any 'scents' to me either. Suspension is way overboard, regardless. Like a kid was suspended for drawing a picture of a gun and bringing candy to school - NO common sense.

yeah....sounds a little extreme....but some folks DO take the cologne thing to the extreme too....we had a lady in our shop yesterday....not sure what she was wearing, but you could still smell it for hours after she had left....

either way....the suspension for something like this is going way overboard...

Hmm I dont know I am 50/50 about this one. I dont know what to think. I know how yall feel about strong amounts of perfume or cologne though. People will walk past me at work and I gag with how much stuff they put on its like dang drown yourself some more I dont think you quiet put enough on today. Or you can still smell their trail they walked. Its horrible. I dont think the girl should have been suspended though thats crazy.

Suspension seems kinda out of line to me. I mean there are showers in the gymn right. Why not just send her to the shower to wash it off and return to class?

I do have to throw out this question though....After being warned and told that this teacher had health problems because of perfumes, you think she could have doused herself with it on purpose to irritate the teacher? Just wondering. Working in a public school lets me see all kinds of things that some parents just can't believe their little angel would do.

suecoop...ya think? Very possibly the case here..once my son was told not to bring his Walkman (remember them) to school again...so he didn't ...he took his sister's and it was taken up and I had to go up there to get it back...oh yes my kid (an angel...NOT) thought he found a way around the rules...the hard part for him was telling his sister why she did not have her Walkman...

OK, let us all bow down to the ISD GODs. These people are absolute IDIOTS. I had a "conversation" with my sons high school principal because he is an idiot. He later prooved it when he got caught in the school parking lot in a car with another faculty member. You can guess the details.

Okay, so the next thing is, the kids can't bath with certain body washes, etc...

Or the parents use certain detergents because the teachers/officials are allergic?

Makes no sense AT ALL!!!!

I'm with the homeschooling.

I understand the smoking.....but, parfume????

PUUUULLLLLEEZZZ!!

I love the smell of perfume and cologne. At one of the places I worked you could tell when the receptionist arrived because the whole office smelled like her perfume. It didn't bother me but I can understand with that much on how it could effect some people. I knew a guy who was allergic to the perfume poison and would get a migraine if anyone wore it.

I think a suspension is ridiculous though. With everything going on in the schools these days that is just stupid.

Hold the phone here, she was not suspended for wearing perfume. She was suspended for insubordination. She had been already been warned this would happen if she wore the perfume again. She got exactly what she deserved.

Perfume often triggers asthma attacks as well as other allergic reactions to many people.
I know the staff in most medical clinic are ask not to wear perfume or cologne for this resaon. Also the gym I work out in has posted a request for members not to wear scents for the same reason.

If smells trigger reactions, then that's the problem of the victim, not the kid. I say this because everyone has the attitude like their personal space is sacred ground. I used to work with a woman who not only asked me not to use perfume-which I do, but lightly-but had the unmitigated gall to ask what deodorant I used and to say that I needed to change brands because of her allergies. Sorry, I am allergic to cats, so when I visit my relatives who have cats, I take measures to avoid a reaction. Now I can understand if it smells like someone bathed in the stuff, but I just think folks are getting way to high and mighty about what their rights are in this world. If you have nothing better to do than harrass a kid over this issue, then you really need to get a life. BTW, I am a teacher, and this woman is out of line. Headlice, pink-eye, the flu-yes get them out of class. Perfume...give them a break.
