Here we go with the corporal punishment again...

" Calling it a morally repugnant practice, two state lawmakers gave opening testimony for a bill that would ban corporal punishment in Ohio schools.

House Bill 406, sponsored by Reps. Jon Peterson, a Republican from Delaware, and Brian Williams, a Democrat from Akron, would affect 17 districts in the state that still administer paddling as a means of discipline.

“There is nothing to indicate that beating our children furthers [advanced learning],” Peterson told the House’s Education Committee today. “We all agree that discipline is important, but we should be focused on effective discipline.”

Under current state law, school districts that have adopted the appropriate policies and resolutions can administer corporal punishment.

Among the districts that have done so are West Branch in Mahoning County (two paddlings administered to one pupil in 2005-06), Mogadore in Portage County (16 paddlings administered to 13 pupils), Canton City in Stark County (91 paddlings to 50 pupils) and Barberton City in Summit County (three paddlings to two pupils), according to statistics compiled by the lawmakers. Under the proposed legislation, school districts would be banned from paddling pupils."

 

.........This is why many of our schools have become war zones...no "fear factor" when it comes to authority.

Parents expect the school to teach and watch over their kids safely for 6-8 hours a day, but take away the staffs ability to keep the population in line....ridiculous.

Next, it will be illegal to yell at the students...might hurt their self esteem....

They have to be able to do something. And some kids its the only discipline they get. The kids are not being BEAT they are being disciplined, plain and simple. Wake up OHIO our kids are BRATS!!

When the govt. takes away our` ability to control our` kids, then I think they should be responsible for them when they end up in trouble.

Yup, agree with both of you.
When I was in grade school, that paddle that hung on the principle's wall was a HUGE deterrent. Was there trouble, sure...but nothing like today.

This touchy feely crapola mentality today...how's that working out?

hmmm, this is a tough call for me. I'm all about getting control of these kids and schools having the ability to put the fear into kids BUT, I have a child with a disability who used to go to public school (kindergarten and 1st grade)... I can tell you that if they had spanking she'd have had a constant bruise on her bottom.

I'm not talking about running around the hall with a paddle wailing away...lol

I think these schools send a release form home at the beginning of the year. You can them exclude a child from this form of punishment if needed.
That's how it was once explained to me....

Ok, I just saw the news article about the 18 students riotting in the classroom and hurting their art teacher...

Corporal punishement in schools SHOULD be banned. It IS morally repugnant for teachers/principals to be allowed to beat people's kids.

As a person who was a student not too long ago I have to say there's no way in hell I'd let soeone hit me. You try to hit me and I'll lay your ass out. If you have a paddle I'll clock you across the face with it.

Well PB I agree but the kids in this news article are violent and someone should have opened up a can of whoopass on em!

These teachers should not have to fear when going to work... good thing I'm not a teacher though... some kid comes at me and I'll break their legs!

I know that's harsh, but we have a right to defend ourselves.

Its not harsh, these teachers DO have a right to defend themselve. They have kids and families at home that count on them to come home at night.

Since it wasnt that long ago that you were in school, then you should remember how bad some of those kids behave. It is WRONG to allow kids to terrorize other kids and teachers. Half of the kids in school now it is the only structure they get. Its not like they paddle the kids in front of a room full of people. Morals have to start somewhere no one can have morals if they are never taught any. The kids are not being beat.

Shark they do send home a release I get one every year. I sign it every year none of my kids have ever been paddled at school yet so something must be working

Perfect!! Whets wrong with that. Why does this damn state thing they have to run everything!
Let the locals schools and their parents do the job and keep the politicians out of it.

i'm with schannel (as usual) LOL i wouldn't be able to be a teacher...........what is WRONG with these kids? they can't be more than 13!!!!

if one of mine EVER even suggested something like that i would personally kick their tail end so hard they wouldn't sit for a month.

polerbear since it wasn't long ago you was in school i will go out on a limb here and say you was a student who thought that you owed no teacher respect unless they first respected you.if that is the case then you are dead wrong.
my kid have never been in trouble in or out of school.they was taught that even if you know the teacher is wrong you DO NOT disrespect them.you come home tell us and we will take care of it from there.
i can tell you from experience that paddling is not a beating (a beating is what you got when you got home) the humiliation of being paddled was far worse than the whack itself.

Polar Bear, you are doing a great job covering for Gorbash in his absence! I like the part "morally repugnant". Gorby would by so proud of you. Some kids now days need a swift kick in the BLEEP. This teacher being attacked demonstrates that the inmates are running the asylum!

I feel kids appreciate control in school. When we banned this type of punishment from other schools is when we started having school shootings. The respect for athority was gone.
