I got another summons for Jury Duty and then I read E. J. Montini's column about a guy who was outraged that the jury summons asked for his nationality.  And it got me thinking, what difference does it make if I'm white or black or Italian or Russian.  What impact does that have on being a good juror?

Anyone know what they ask such outrageous questions?

Rick

If you're of this nation, your nationality is American.
NOTE:
A legal relationship involving allegiance on the part of an individual and usually protection on the part of the state. Membership in a particular nation where fidelity is owed by a citizen to a government via devotion and/or loyalty.

"Anyone know what they ask such outrageous questions?"

Possibly, just playing their game to be politically correct. {Fail-Safe-Inquiry}

In some cases you are not required to answer that question. I never answer.

I believe it might be to verify it's really you who the summons is for. That's my only explanation for the question. Otherwise it shouldn't matter the nationality as long as you're a legal, law abiding citizen you should be able to serve on a jury.

The story goes that the original jurors were picked according to their astrological sign, 12. Perhaps they are changing to make sure that they have different nationalities. LOL

Its likely because if your white and the defendent is black, it may cause bias in your judgement, etc....

Rick - I can't imagine why they would ask, unless they dont' want nationality favoritism (I think that's a new one) to play a role in how you would vote. I too am an Italian American - so maybe they wouldn't want me on the jury for Sammy the Bull or Gotti Jr.!
By the way - I really miss you in the early AM - I watch from 5:30 - 6:40 before work.

You have a point rick, but it not only applies to jury duty detail's.It also goes along with many job applications even loans.More then less skeptic about it but i would think it would be a preference for background screening for crimnal records or for future investigations if one were to surface. It just come to show how intrusive people can be and is an epidemic with the world today.

I'm not sure exactly what they call it, but I think it has something to do with being sure they have a balanced group of people. It's stupid for sure though.

I'm thinking it's called "stacking the deck."

I know my black friends basically have nothing good to say about whites, same with my Hispanic friends. When you voir dire a jury, I think those considerations would be considerations.

I think it is for the lawyers mostly, who pick juror's that will most benefit their cases for trials. Rygg is right its to balance the jury box in favor of either the defending or prosecuting attorneies depending on the case.

If a certin minority was on trial, they(attornies)would want a certin "blend" of
ethnic favoritism in their jury pool that would best benefit their client.

Hence the saying "being judge by your peer's"

The thing is, I'm Italian, Madonna is Italian, Janet Napolatano is Italian, Robert Dinero is Italian, Jerry Collengello is Italian...EJ Montini is Italian - as he pointed out in his column - would we all act the same on a jury?

Even if one claims oneself as 'a hyphenated American',
and though who is legally American
(yet having a different national-heredity-name),
they are First ..... American!

As an example: is O'bama an Irishman?
