Here's a conversation I found myself having in the newsroom.  Why is there not an unprecedented effort underway from the highest levels of government to try to come up with solutions to the energy crisis?  Seriously, where is the leadership?  Why hasn't President Bush called the top leaders in business together with key people in his administration and the leadership in the House and Senate and said, we're not leaving until we come up with some concrete solutions?  The simple fact that it's just fodder on the campaign trail makes it seem like the two top candidates are just throwing out ideas (John McCain:  Drill More!) (Barack Obama:  Make Smaller Cars!) to see if anything sticks.

In the meantime, $4 gas is slowly choking our economy to death.

I remember having to give a speech on a newsworthy topic during my days in college at the University of Washington.  The problem, as I saw it then, was that we were relying on foreign countries to import approximately 50% of our oil.  That was 1979.  Here we are almost 30 years later, and guess what, we haven't learned anything.  We're now moving toward the unbelievable number of 70% of our oil being imported.  It was a problem 30 years ago, and we've done nothing!

Oh, no, wait, we have done something.  We've handed our very security and way of life over to Middle Eastern nations that we are now entirely dependent on.  So far that's only brought us to $4 gas.  Imagine what would happen if they decided to shut off the oil.  Don't laugh.  They did it to us in 1973, and it crippled us economically.  And that's when we weren't importing more than 30% of our oil.   Oh, yeah, and we've also allowed our standard of living to slip while enriching places like Dubai as we've sent billions and billions and billions of our dollars to the Middle East.

I know President Bush is in his last year in office.  But to simply wait for the next person to take office and try to come up with some solutions in mid-2009, won't cut it.  No issue...Social Security...Education...Iraq...is as important as this one.  I really don't know what the solution is.  In fact, I don't think there is one solution.  It has to be many things.  Everything should be on the table.  A consensus needs to be built.  This problem needs to be solved...or at least the first big steps need to be taken toward solving it.  Now.

As far as Im concerned RON let them cut us off. I can only see that as being the saving grace this country needs, Yes it would be devastating to our ecomony, WE WILL PREVAIL!We are Americans the strongest most giving nation on earth. What do you think the rest of the world will do if we decide to stop all the giving, cut off the flow of money that pours out of this country and take care of ourselves? It would at the very least clean house in DC with the crooked politicans who have DONE NOTHING FOR 30yrs!!! and get us off OPEC!!! I say to hell with the middle east, I am sick and effin tired of supporting those countries that think we are inferior to there barbaric belief's and want me to change my life style or die. Well maybe the only life style I can see me changing (of course I already did 3yrs ago)is to SELL MY CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Ron, for addressing this sad state of affairs..

It is absolutely unbelievable what our leaders have done to our country and it is our fault as well. Why aren't Americans out marching in the streets, demanding them to take care of business?? Other countries would be marching even if their very lives were at risk. The only ones marching in our streets are illegals, demanding "their rights". I think nativephoenician is right, it might start a fire under our butts to get us started.

We can start by cleaning out the crooks in Washington and taking our government back. Put the lobbyist out of business and QUIT voting the others back into office forever and ever.

RON--read the blog by Patch_W_Adams about a Continental Congress, doing a story on it would restore some faith in the Fox News show.
Our "leaders" are way too inaccessible, they need to wake up and see what the citizenry of this country wants, and expects.

Not all the 70% of our oil that is imported comes from the middle east. We get a big chunck from Canada and a big chunck from Mexico and these two make up more than what we get from the middle east. I agree that we should point fingers but, lets make sure we are pointing in the right direction. If we are to go on the offensive, we must be absolutely sure of our information.

Well Ron that is 51.1 million dollar question to the voters and to the Supreme Court.

Thats why I say, if you voted for George Bush, once or even twice, you should be barred from voting for at least another eight years until you have paid back $115,000 that my grand daughter owes the Chinese Government for borrowing 2.1 trillion dollars for a mere phony achievement for "HUNT OIL" Now John McCain's lobbyist foundation for more war!

So Please send money 50.1 million voters! We knew what was in the pudding before it was even in the refrigerator! Death, destruction, and a new Master Plan. Bush Kempf Knew II!

We have no leadership. When Bush first got into office he was surrounded with wall to wall repukelicans. He could have passed drilling oil in the center of down town New York City. But he waits until we have $4+ gas to get of his tooshie.
Now Bush is surrounded by a bunch of lilly livered liberals. He can't even pass gas. And I'm not talking the $4 a gallon kind.

Not to worry. The two candidates will have even LESS leadership.

The ONLY reason Bush won either election was because the dummycrats put Gore and Kerry up against him. If they would have put up a decent candidate, Bush never would have won. And we would be in worse shape than we are now.

Oh, Ron, I so agree! We need leaders to actively develop alternative energy sources. For vehicles, we could come up with an engine that uses alternative fuel, if only someone would pay for the incentive to do so. (Money is always the bottom line, isn't it?) If an ASU student can buy a kit and convert his car to all electric, then why can't Detroit build cars that run on something other than gas. And as for electricity here in AZ, why do we have to have Palo Verde? Why didn't the state develop solar and wind power instead? Short-sighted politicians instead of real leaders!

WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP RIGHT NOW ..... and back then?

When incompetents are 'voted' into office to 'run' the country,
what do you all expect?
Look at the so-called leadership we have had over the years
(From both sides of the aisle!).

As long as 'people in general' vote for 'mere-personalities' alone
(without conscientious thought and without serious consideration
on the 'politicians' qualifications) ..... (mainly via statewide elections)
we will always be doomed.

It would be great if 'politicians' were all up-front and patriotic,
but they are not. Mostly, their primary concern is "themselves".

Politicians generally do what they do best......
"Seek Attention via espousing impractical ideas,
reinforce those ideas with false claims
and blame failure on another."
..... Most are merely ... manipulators.
Their conception of people in general, seemingly, is to
"Control" without empiricism (logic, analysis, and synthesis) reason".
They prostitute themselves for undeserved fame and power.
It is a Personality Game! It's a fantasy game!
'Most' are self indulgent parasites living off their host; US!
It really doesn't matter if 'anything' is done for the 'people' or not ...
Their Ultimate Importance is merely being ....."The Politician".

Leadership? What leadership?
This sham has been going on for decades!
So what's really new?
NOTHING!

Politicians create more problems than 'they' supposedly solve!
Doubt it? Just re-do history ,say, these past twenty years!

We have a President that in 2004 said that the US needed to find alternatives to oil. Then in 2008 that same President says we need to drill off the US coast to get more oil? Funny how that man, along with the man running for the Presidency (McCain) have both said the same thing. McSame or something completely different?

The good leaders have all been hiding, out of the ever prying eyes of the MEDIA. What person in their right mind would want to face the onslaught of endless nitpicking by the press? No matter how much they nitpick, they have not and never will find someone who is PERFECT but, they do a good job eliminating people who are really good leaders because of some minscule flaw in their background. If they ever find someone perfect, they will probably hang him on a cross AGAIN.
RDJVZ: He is still saying alternative fuels but we need the oil now to sustain until those alternative fuels are available. I see you are back from the cool country -- TOO BAD!

Have you noticed the past year or so the smirks on Cheney and Bush's faces. It's like I don't care, we're lame duck repulsivegans that screwed up and now we'll pass the mess we made on to the next generation. We're rich, we can do as we please, suckers.

Ron, these are all very good points. As much as I don't like Bush, I can't blame him for all of this mess. Government in general seems to be just "The Good Ole' Boys Club." They're all concerned with lining their pockets with Lobbyist cash and gifts while the people's voices go unheard. Check the list of current politicians on the boards of the pharmaceutical companies alone....then tell me it's not a "what are you going to do for me" atmosphere. This is not new, it's just business as usual. I guess we're not speaking (or yelling) loud enough, they like us distracted while they go on about their business of raping the average worker in this country. Most folks really aren't paying that much attention.

OK worldlessone, he says we need oil now. That makes about as much sense as anything else you've ever posted. It will take years for the process to make a dent in the price of gasoline or haven't you heard about that yet? How about someone tells the Saudis to kiss their collective asses instead of taken it in said BLEEP? I can answer that in four words BUSH IS FROM OIL. Sorry I didn't get lost in the woods as you wished. You see I have a GPS Tracking device. It shows me where all the morons are and I've hit the jackpot on this site. That last statement is not for everyone, just those of you that are in fact moronic.

You do know that the President is not the same as a king or a dictator. Why isn't our democratic congress doing anything about all of out current problems?? I don't believe they've done one damn good thing in 8 years.

Please Explain!
I am confused (via your explanation regarding 'sticking to the subject), when, in fact, you actually 'redirect topics' on another's blog or attack others on another blog. Why is that? Yet, when someone does try to question you at your site, you immediately "DELETE" any such comment!
Oh, I get it ..... "Do as 'you' say and not as 'you' do"!
How convenient for you!

ALSO.... how is it you modified what I wrote to 'change my message' to your own wording? (Fraudulent Postings NOW?)

Misrepresentation of TRUTHFULNESS is a LIE!
What does that make you?

The U.S. Congress is made up of two parts, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Congress meets at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Its primary duty is to write, debate, and pass bills, which are then passed on to the President for approval the Congress majority is currently democratic.

And then the President vetoes them. What's the point again?
