Let's run through the list of problems Delta Airlines has had in the last few days.

First, there is the still unexplainable holding of passengers on board an aircraft for SEVEN HOURS.  This is after virtually every airline promised it wouldn't keep passengers trapped on board planes any longer.  That was at JFK, and a spokesman for the airline said they had no idea why it happened...other than a thunderstorm in Las Vegas.  Still waiting for an explanation from the pilot...I guess.  But it's not hard to pull the plane up to a gate and let people off.

Then there's the story about the lady who ended up dead in the restroom of a Delta flight.  This was an overnight flight from LA to Atlanta.  It's still unexplained why the flight attendants didn't check to see why the restroom was in use during final approach and landing.  But after all that, they went to go look, and found the woman dead.

The capper is the new policy that charges the poor guy whose traveling with a lot of luggage.  By the time you get to a third bag on Delta now, they'll charge you $125.  Add the $50 for the second bag (OK, it's true they don't charge for the first), and you're at $175 each way.  Do the math on that one:  That's $350 per round trip.  That could be more than the cost of the ticket to fly there in the first place.

Compare this to Southwest.  Somehow they fly people all over the country without charging for luggage.  And, as opposed to Delta, and virtually all the other airlines, they make a profit.

Looking at the one time industry leader (I put Delta in that group along with American and United), is it any wonder the whole airline business is in trouble?

I agree that it's completely absurd. Luckily, I don't do a lot of flying - if I did you'd hear me cursing all the way down in Phoenix.

But it WILL have an impact - they're slowly driving themselves out of business: just like the oil companies. When only the well-off can afford to travel by air, the airlines will go the way of the horse and buggy.

I am in favor of charging for extra luggage. Honestly, it is rude and elitist for Americans to bring so much luggage on vacations. I just spent 2 weeks in WI and MN and took 4 pairs of shows, 8 'bottoms', 16 'tops' and everything that goes along with it and managed to pair it down to a laptop backpack and a piece of luggage that I could have carried on if I wanted to. ANything more than that is ridiculous.

I learned this lesson when I went to Amsterdam and Paris for 2.5 weeks. I brought a huge bag that had to be lugged up 4 flights of tiny stairs by the bell man. I have never felt more embarrassed in my life. How disgusting of me to think I needed half of what I brought.

And Southwest didn't lose a ton of money during 911. Therefore, they had the ability and a great CEO (started jetblue) with the foresight to lock in at $50/barrel price.

Carrying extra weight takes gas and they are just doing everything they should have done a long time ago.

As for the other issues, there is no excuse for this. I just hope this never happens to me as I will be arrested for claiming that I have a medical condition (diabetes most likely) and must get off.

Im going to have to fly Southwest Airlines this travel hockey season. When my son has an out-of-town hockey tourney we have to bring a fully loaded hockey bag, stick bag, and 1 suitcase per person. Plus we each take a backpack. And if you think about it, there are at least 13 kids on a team, thats 13 hockey bags alone that are most likely going to be on the same flight.

I think airlines should go bald. I heard that the weight of the paint could get rid of alot of weight.

I feel sad for the person who passed away on the airplane. My mothers father passed away on an airplane flight to Vegas. It was extremly heartbreaking for my grandmother. My mother was only 12 at the time and it has always been extremely difficult for her to fly. And my grandmother never flew again.

C'MON DELTA
Just give it up, NOW
Southwest Airlines should be ready for a buttload of bankrupt airline sales.
You can double or triple your fleet for pennies on the dollars.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINE ROCKS

Culling of the heard Rick, nature just doing her job. The weak(United, American) and the sick(US Air, Delta) will be out of business very soon and the strong(Southwest) will remain supreme.
