Haven't heard much about the Trans Texas Highway, news organizations seem quiet on this. Recently read that it will be 1/4 of mile wide running from south Texas north. Haven't heard what our northern neighbors feel about this. Gov Perry is for it, his aide worked for the Spanish Co that has the contract to build it as a lobbyist for the Spanish Co. The Aide now works for Perry again. Can you say conflict of interest. Seems no one else running for Gov is in favor of this. Why? Why is this highway private and why can't we find an American company to build it if it passes the legislature. Seems it will be good for getting illegals from the border north as soon as possible. OK, that's getting them out of Texas. Can't be all bad.

This is a bad deal. For the profit of few, the biggest land grab in US history.

But get this, Mexican trucks (not up to US standards) will be able to travel from Mexico through Texas up to a "Smart Port" in Kansas City without have to stop and go through customs.

Its going to be toll road, with the profits going to a private Spanish company, not to the taxpayers who will be using it, not to build new roads, not to lower gas taxes. Strayhorn, has been the most vocal against this, but she has taken money from companies that will be building the road.

I generally like the idea of the Trans Texas Highway, but I don't like how they are going about it. I don't care what company it is that develops it. I do care about the conflict of interest. The idea is pretty good if you ask me. Create a toll way with higher speed limits, larger roads, where all the trucks if I am not mistaken are required to drive on their own roads, the mexican trucks which I think should go thru customs at the border would not be on the same roads as regular cars.

There would be a high speed rail service between the cities, immagine going to austin from the dallas area in about an hour or less, with out having to go thru all the hassle at the airport. I agree its a 'land grab', but if you look at the state of transportation in this country its in the dumpster compared to other countries. We have NO high speed rail due to the airlines filling the pockets of lobbiests. It would certainly allow for faster commutes, I could possibly commute to Austin from Dallas daily. The tolls for cars would certainly be worth the traffic head aches on 35 in my oppinion, and remember, if you don't like it don't use it :)

Oh back to the land grab. I can't see how much a 1/4 mile or just over 1300 foot wide swath of land from Dallas to San Antonio is going to affect that many people. There is hardly anything between the cities. Mainly used for grazing. They should be able to get a premium for their land, then they would also own the land around the highway should gas stations etc crop up.

terrelltoday : as far as the comment about the profits going to a Spanish c

chris: trucks would not be required to use the toll road, and trucks would not stop and go through customs.

I agree, something needs to be done about the traffic, but this plan will do nothing to ease the traffic in DFW.

Thanks :) I don't like the idea of customs up in Kansas, and I think the idea of semi lanes for trucks would be a good idea (I thought they were doing that, and if not they SHOULD :) ). I beg to differ about traffic in DFW. Think of a semi coming from say, Arkansas down 30 going towards Austin, They are probably either going to go thru down town or on 635 and then 35 south to get to their destination, from my understanding the last time they were talking about the road, it would be east of rockwall. Keep all those semis out of rush hour traffic where they take up the space of 4 or 5 regular cars might actually make a difference in the amount of traffic around here. This was a great topic btw :)

The plan appears to be moving more to putting it closer to Dallas. They think this will help development, but access will be limited. They do not want traffic to be getting off the toll road. They want it to be a ribbon THROUGH Texas, the way I see it the trucks can either pay to use a toll road, or use 35 for free. I think they would take the free road. I went to 2 of the hearings and I heard Jeb Hensarling address it also. This deal is opposed by the Texas Republican Party and the Democratic State Party. The only ones who favor is are Rick Perry and Todd Staples (who wrote the legislation).

I wont be voting for either one. Governor will probably be the person who is running 2nd on election day for me.

I don't like it. The company building it is not an U.S company first off. Sounds like we'll have alot more drugs getting in. I won't be voting for Rick Perry either.
