scottythecomic's whimsical rantings

The U.S. government is already fighting a losing battle with the War On Drugs. Rather than curtailment, more and more drugs continue to flood across our pourous borders, mainly from the south.

Now comes a Texas Represenative  from Waco, Charles "Doc" Anderson, who last year proposed a bill to criminalize the hallucinogenic compound, salvia.  Doc's bill failed to clear committee during last years session, thus he plans on reintroducing a version of the bill that would make the possession of salvia a misdemeanor.

I have to ask, why?

Is it truly in the interest of the citizens of Texas and/or the United States to criminalize everything that alters ones consciousness?  And what will be the result of this bill (if it passes), on those who dare choose to hallucinate...if they are caught?

To me it appears to be nothing more than a vain attempt to ruin lives, burden the taxpayers and create yet another law.  Therefore I am against it...totally.  Besides, once salvia is criminalized, it actually makes the drug more popular. Brilliant of you, Doc. Drugs can be bad enough without a campaign to popularize them.

For those unawares, salvia is an all-natural hallucinogenic that is either smoked like marijuana or chewed. The effects are near instant and are less powerful than LSD. It is available in over a half dozen locations in Dallas over the counter and, is legal in the USA.

Local hospitals have admitted that they have not seen any ER visits as a result of its usage, and this despite the fact it has been around for years. I am surprised that no one has experienced an ER vist as a result of the drug. OD'ing is not possible to the extent that you can't do enough, but I refer to the dangerous conditions presented when one indulges.

As bad as drugs can be I sincerely don't believe we do anything positive by outlawing recreational, personal usage.  It's akin to the failed draconian laws of the prohibition of alcohol.  Too, if local, state and federal law enforcement cannot curtail the myriad offenses of a deadly drug like alcohol, how can we expect them to do anything positive in curtailing a teen drug?

Your thoughts?

Isn't salvia usage primarily among Native Americans? If so, what good comes from outlawing a very rarely used drug? As an aside, there shouldn't be separate drug laws for Native Americans and Joe Schmoes.

Our neighbor tried it. She's 14. She claimed it wasn't for her but she wanted to see what al the hype was.

I sincerely believe that outlawing the drug will only increase awareness of it.

That's a good point, jla. I don't personally know what is what with this stuff. But like TI, I wouldn't recomment smoking whatever is in your back yard.

Salvia is available for sale in Dallas if you must try it.

Ted, that's my point!

When the government gets involved more and more will hear about it and rebel just because it is forbidden.

By the way, there are several videos on You Tube if you type in salvia in the search window on You Tube.

MAN - glad I read the whole post :

I've been holding my spit all morning

afraid I was going to jail !

Us old codgers are just not up with today's world !

No wonder all the kids in my neighborhood want to mow my yard, it's full of weeds !

I haven't tried it. Don't expect I will. I'm happy with cannabis. it doesn't, from the vid, appear to be anything to be concerned about. Putting a person in jail for laughing their proverbial butt off is absurd. Making it "forbidden fruit", is a great way to make many people curious. What you saw in the vid is what I have been told it is like. No big deal. Wasn't there something around called laughing gas? Still is isn't it. Maybe we should put this on the list of stuff the police should waste their time on also.

There are many web sites that give info on legal plants that can get one high. Salvia and morning glory are two of the most common.

It's a waste of time and money for government to try to control people and what they do. It will always be a losing battle.

Legislating morality is near impossible, cbfan, yet how do we educate people? It's a tough, tough choice.

How do we educate people? - Try to be good parents and teach our kids the right thing to do.

Oh, I'm there with you. The simple fact of the matter is that a lot of folks don't even talk to their kids about so-called taboo subjects.

Native Californian transplanted to Texas in 1989, and I love the Metroplex! I'm a veteran paratrooper/infantryman and very conservative minded. I have no qualms about confronting policies that are detrimental to the United States of America regardless of any political persuasion. I support a strong military, tough, no-nosense politics, truth, justice and yes, even apple pie. I am against the Oprah-ization of this country, liberal politics and seditionists at every level. I'm a firm believer in the idea that the coddling mentality has backfired and served to ruin the backbone of America. There's nothing a good BLEEP-kicking or some firm policies won't fix. I love sports, most notably NASCAR, the NHL, the NFL and MLB. I am a season ticket holder for the Dallas Stars and out at Texas Motor Speedway. Win or lose, I stick to my teams: Dallas Stars, Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians and the San Diego Padres.
