scottythecomic's whimsical rantings

The worst isn't over but rather is to come.

Between Mayor Ray "Dunce" Nagin, the plethora of meteorologists (local and national), and the media, they have collectively and perhaps unknowingly combined to set up N.O. residents as well as the rest of those that live in the coastal areas.

Gustav was overrated. There, I said it. The incessant maybe's and myriad what if's that drooled from the mouths of those "in the know" sent chills and pangs of guilt through the masses.  The automons watched...while they could.

When politicians gave the order to evacuate  the media was right there to hype it. Dunce Nagin even called Gustav the "Storm of the Century", and no one ever dared question him on it.  People fled in abject horror. In the end, 8 people died as a result of from evacuating, not the actual storm.

All of this hysteria served to set the Gulf residents up for a future, major disaster. Masses are now second guessing the evacuation. No matter what the warnings are that will come from the next major hurricane, many will ignore them and remain.  And why wouldn't they?  The media can hype a moehill into being Mt. Everest. Sadder still, many believe it.

Thanks, FEMA! Thanks, Ray! Thanks, meteoroligists!

Overrated is an understatement... and no need, EVER, of 24/7 5 days coverage. My gosh, you'd think the 'news' ppl were having an orgy on some possible storm. Dreadful over coverage - nothing new.
And yes, thanks to the Republican Governor... things were totally handled correctly. He was in contact with FEMA days in advacne, unlike the Dem Gov, who didn't want to talk to "Bush's ppl".

It was a combo of guilt and a slow news day that kept Gustav on TV. I swear to you I really believe that the worst will come one day as a result of the proclivity of those who would dare "Cry Wolf", all the while knowing the moral of that old story.

Ppl are told to leave, most of the time they don't... so they die or lose their homes. But, it's their choice. They just have to be willing to pay it and not whine about it afterwards. Katrina was flooding, not wind. Money had been sent for decades to improve the levee and the democrat leadership spent it elsewhere.

THIS MUCH COVERAGE was totally unnecessary and silly - but they will do it again.

One of these days when the media cries wolf, may will not hear, stay, and thus die.

This reminds me of my home state of California. Since I was a kid I heard about the "big one" in terms of earthquakes.

Well-meaning people have warned but few have heeded the peril and still live on the absolute biggest fault in the world.

Funny how Hollyweird is right on it, no?

scotty, they usually DO ignore and die. Thus, Katrina. It's normal human behavior and then when it goes really wrong, they whine like it wasn't their own fault. As if the government should have SAVED them from their own ignorant selves.
The big will happen but I think it will be during the Tribulation. Much of California gone? Probably.

After my study of John I am headed back to a study of Revelation.

I wonder if the government could make a positive out of this good evacuation and use it to train people how to go the next time.
It was good training.

I agree, Impervious. The training is invaluable. My point is that many will no longer flee hurricanes because of the non-destructive nature of Gustav in comparison with Katrina.

I know Gustav did a lot of damage.

Read the blog again for comprehension.

eh, if they HADN'T called for an evacuation, and it WAS bad (your guess is as good as theirs) and disaster struck yet again....then you (and the evacuees) would blamed nagin, the meteoroligist, and the fact that the majority of them were black. you can be lumped in with the people that complain about the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter, the drought when it doesn't rain then wishes for the rain to go away. you cannot be happy or thankful that it was not a total disaster.

Wrong, noradar.

I said from jump it was hyped and overrated to appease the masses and cover rear ends.

I was right from day 1.

The simple fact is that people have been riding out hurricanes for most of mankind's history.

Only recently have people been evacuated.

Put that on your radar screen and deal with it.

scotty, is it? yeah, most adults drop the 'y' after....say, 5th grade?

they shouldn't have evacuated. it was a choice. even when katrina called for mandatory evacuations, dumbasses still stayed and then went wah-wah-wah all the way to FEMA.

Radar, you evacuate then. That's your choice. But when you figure the odds based on the myriad hurricanes along the gulf over the past 100 years, they're overrated.

My entire point is that people will ignore future warnings. Hide and watch. It really doesn't matter all that much to me what they do.

i agree with hurricanes being overrated. i am not arguing with you there. it is a catch 22 for nagin and the media. when katrina hit, n.o. blamed nagin, media, and anyone that wasn't poor for the disaster. this time, nagin decided to TELL them to evacuate and tax dollars PAID for them to leave, and the cities they evacuated to did nothing but accomodate them AT NO EXPENSE and they STILL complained? the evacuation itself turned out to be THE disaster for the evacuees.

i do not feel sorry for them having to take an all-expense-paid minivacation, that's all.

I agree, radar, thus my blog. Moreover, all this crying wolf will cause the death of more in the future.

Too, when you look at other countries and islands, they don't evacuate at all.

Crying wolf..yeah, I absolutely HATE these people that are always like..bleh, it was overrated..don't blame the meteorologists..like I said before..why don't you TRY to figure out where the storm is going to go. There's MUCH more behind the scenes than you realize..and don't come complaining once severe weather hits here and say it was overrated once again just to be able to have it on TV and cut off so and so show..who really CARES! I'm a storm spotter and actually send reports to channel 4..so, just leave it be!

Txweather, I really don't care what you are. If I was wrong as often as you are on my job I wouldn't have one.

Native Californian transplanted to Texas in 1989, and I love the Metroplex! I'm a veteran paratrooper/infantryman and very conservative minded. I have no qualms about confronting policies that are detrimental to the United States of America regardless of any political persuasion. I support a strong military, tough, no-nosense politics, truth, justice and yes, even apple pie. I am against the Oprah-ization of this country, liberal politics and seditionists at every level. I'm a firm believer in the idea that the coddling mentality has backfired and served to ruin the backbone of America. There's nothing a good BLEEP-kicking or some firm policies won't fix.
