Skootzkitty's Litter Box of Stuff

I was just checking out  ABCnews. com and found this article:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/scienceandsociety/2008/04/
death-and-your.html

You know, I have never thought about this but it does have me wondering about ethical and legal ramifications: What if someone you love committed suicide and they left no explaination as to why? Would it be ethical to search for this by hacking their accounts or for ISP's to provide you with correspondence that may shed some light on the why? Would the privacy of someone they told, who thought perhaps they were not serious be protected? And should it? Or perhaps [in the extreme] someone who said 'Oh dude, why don't you just off yourself!' in a saved IM, text or email and they did - would that person then be liable for charges? Where do you draw the line between privacy and death? After all this was a 'private' communication right? Or at least as private as one can get in the digital age - is there a line between privacy of the person in question and the families need to know? Should there be a line? Is it ethical?

Well, if it was someone I cared about, my arse would be off in that persons machine, hacking in from mine, anything to find out why. If the emails were deleted, good luck with getting an ISP to play along. Most will tell you it isn't possible (HA! AGAIN).
Nothing online is private.
As we have seen in this forum, most anyone can be an BLEEP when it comes to the online word. Even with the excuse of trying to make others stop (HA!). If someone dies, finding out why should be first most. Screw privacy.

But why? I mean there are ethics involved. True that I would want to know, but in my thinking it is also private and the choice would be do I violate my loved ones privacy because they are dead - where is the line? I wouldn't do it if they were alive, so where is the line? Should there be a line? It is, for myself anyways, an ethical v moral decision. WHICH is right? Is one more right than the other and if so why?

Anyone that would commit suicide isn't in the right mind to have privacy. Maybe it wouldn't have happened otherwise. Plus, it's a matter of the living needing to carry on. And what if there were more to it than that? If someone was mentally torturing someone to the point of them killing themself, they don't deserve the privacy either. They may need to be charged with something.
I just noticed my HA and HA AGAIN aren't in the right order. I blame dyslexia. ;-}

I have an in law who committed suicide.

My thought on this is if we can find out why they did it maybe it could prevent furter sucides. Some of these private issues need to be investigated privately of course. How are we to go fix or try to help a problem if we never know what the problem was to begin with? More harm than good can become from speculation.

Bella - I have known 3 ppl that committed suicide, plus a family member that tried. I would do ANYTHING to make sure it didn't happen again and would find out why, if it does.
I agree, find out why in private, unless it involved someone goating them into it. Then that person and I use the term lightly, would pay. Dearly. But I have and would again, find out why.

Sometimes people are in so much pain it comsumes them. Even though they may have friends and family they love the pain is overbearing. Suicicde is a way out. A lot of people commit suicide because of depression. A lot think it is their only way out. It leaves the ones behind never being able to be at peace or understand it. They always are gonna think "I could/should have done something. Suicide has become so popular that things/laws need to change to better understand the symptoms and why this is happening. There needs to more than a "suicide hotline". There are drugs now to help with depression. Back in the day you were labeled "crazy if you saw a shrink or therapist". Some people need to talk to someone who is a third party so to speak. But I think now more than ever when you care for someone and things began to change we need to try to help in some way.

This sorta of thing did have to an 11 yr. old girl ... ADULTS harassing her, pretending to be a boyfriend, dumped her and told her to kill herself, which she did.
I'm sure laws will catch up to technology sooner or later....... but some adults will never be 'responsible'.

Right - but that was on MYS. Not really private....but emails so is there a line?

Nancy and bella - been there. I was so depressed I DID think it was a way out of the incredible pain I felt. Almost was 'sucessful' [if you can term it that way] except for a perceptive black cat named Mercury who jumped up on the tub and knocked the razor blade out of my hand. That single little act by an animal who I loved, brought me out of the fog to stare in horror at a bathtub full of hot water. Made a call not 5 mins later and got help. Thanks Mer-Mer!! I miss you!

That aside - would it have been right for my folks to try to find emails as to why? I didn't leave a note for anyone, I didn't tell anyone - not my folks [my dad was as your decribe Bella - when I told him i was in therapy he asked if I was crazy, nice] none of my friends in the BBS community, no one I worked with, not my LTR [because he thought depression was BS] no one. So would invading my privacy for no reason have been ethical?

The cops can get a warrant to look at our 'private' emails.
Employers have the right to look at private emails.
And I'm sure a family has the legal right so they can do what they want. Best idea is, if you don't want anyone reading what you say... don't say it. It's all save on the hard drive anyway.

What's so bad about suicide is, I imagine the majority of ppl have no idea where they'll go next.

BINGO! I was hoping someone would come to that conclusion! : )

I knew where I would go - question is would I have had to come back and do it all over as I would have taken an 'easy' way out for myself? Yeah no thanks - rode the ride so far, might as well finish it, get the t-shirt then it's off to the pampered life of a housecat [my nirvana] *lol*

ah! Nothing like the life of a house cat! We have 4... of the laziest, most indulged creatures you've even seen. Gotta loooove the kitty's!

It surprises me when ppl think they're emails @ work at private. I had a friend who's employer MONITORED every word. Kinda sick. lol
