I spent 10 days with my Navy son on Pearl Harbor over the holidays. On Christmas Eve night I stumbled from security to the terminal through tears with the sound of my son's voice yelling "I love you Mom!" He is leaving for Bahrain the 12th on his destroyer. I felt so heartbroken leaving my son with tears in his eyes. I found myself, as I often do, where God most likely has put me for a reason. I witnessed the hand of God twice that night. First, the only place to sit in the terminal waiting for my flight back to DFW was by an Army soldier. I saw the red-rimmed eyes and he saw mine. We talked and I found out that he is going back for his second tour in Iraq. His wife had just left to go back to base to take care of their two children. They had celebrated Christmas two days earlier so he could be with his children. We comforted eachother. Second, as we got ready to board it was announced that we would be carrying soldiers who were being deployed to Iraq and everyone clapped their hands in support. After a while the flight attendant was scurrying up and down the aisles and the soldier I was talking to followed her up front. It was later announced that a couple had given up their first-class seats for two soldiers, and he was one of them. His last name is Wagner. My son's last name is Roland. Please keep these two in your prayers along with all the others who are out there away from their families and comforts of home.

What a wonderful post. Your son has my utmost respect and admiration, and I'll pray for his safe return. I remember sitting at J.F.K. airport on my way to Saudi Arabia before the Desert Storm war. I called my mother, who lived on Long Island at the time, and told her where I was. We were waiting on our connecting flight. She knew I always loved White Castle hamburgers, and brought a few dozen to the airport for me and my buddies, who were very appreciative since the flight to J.F.K. didn't have meals for us. WE WERE STARVING! Then I saw my mother cry as we boarded the plane....A moment not soon forgotten.

I have seen and read story after story where someone who can catch a baseball, throw a football or run a little faster than the other guy is called a hero. I cannot tell you how angry that makes me when there are young men and women who are willing to leave their family and friends to go off to another country and put their life on the line for our country. Your son Mr. Roland and the other young man, Mr. Wagner are two true heroes. I will indeed keep the two of them and as well as all members of our military in my prayers. Please tell your son thank you from a fellow Texan.

Thanks to all of you. I had decided not to post to my blog until I thought I had something worth saying. This was it. I appreciate the positive posts and support, but most of all it's comforting to know that others will be raising their names in prayers for protection along with all of our heroes who are serving. Thanks!

I hope all will go well with his tour. Those two men and all the rest of our brave soldiers will always have my thoughts and prayers. Whether this war is right or wrong, being run the right way or not is a personal decision. I get so tired of listen to A-Holes talk about how they see it and what they think should be done. A war is not a computer game; it’s real men and women risking their lives. No matter how we feel about this war, we should always respect them and honor them.

suecoop, your son is amoung some of this countries finest. I was born and raised on O'ahu and have visited the Arizona memorial many times.Did you happen to know that none other then Elvis, helped with the building of the Arizona memorial? It's a long story but a d.j.in Hawai'i had heard that the Defense Dept had run out of funds to finish the Arizona memorial. So Tom Moffat(the D.J.) contacted Col. Tom Parker and talked Elvis into doing three concerts in Hawai'i. ALL proceeds went to the Arizona memorial fund. Every time Elvis came to Hawai'i he'd make sure that he visited the memorial. God Bless you and your son for his bravery.

ELVIS? I had no idea! A teacher I work with also helped fund the Arizona Memorial, although in a much smaller way.

Thank you all for your kind and heartwarming responses. Behind every uniform we see is a story and we sometimes forget that since we see them so often now. I appreciate your support for me, my son and Wagner, and all the others out there.

DFW has some of the BEST people on earth!

So sorry to hear, but i will keep them in my prayers.

On another note, can your son look up another Navy Soldier and see where they are? I've been looking for my best friend but haven't heard from her since 11Sep when her and her newlywed husband were immediately shipped out. Noone will tell me anything since I am not "family"...how wrong they are on that.

I am married with three grown children. The last one just moved out so we are experiencing "empty nest" quite happily. No dogs, no cats, or anything else to take care of. I am a proud American, Texan and Southern woman. I am very proud of my son, who is serving in the US Navy. I am bilingual as I speak English and Texan. We are currently looking to relocate in Farmers Branch.
