In debate in the Dallas City Council is inacting an ordinance to tow vehicles without insurance.  They already tow those involved in accidents, but want to extend it to tow anyone stopped and unable to show proof of insurance.  It seems simple enough and makes complete sense to me.  If you don't have insurance, you have a higher chance of having your car towed and having to pay those charges on top of the ticket for no insurance.  If this prompts just half of those who do not have insurance to go get some, then I'm all for this!

BUT....according to one of the member of the city council, councilwoman Davis....it's targeting poor, Hispanic and especially young black male drivers.  (Her words in the interview)  So is she saying that if you are poor, Hispanic or black there's an escuse to not live up to the responsibility that comes with the priviledge of driving a vehicle?  These folks can always take public transportation, walk, or ride a bicycle if they can't afford the total expense of car ownership.  Isn't that part of the reasoning behind public transportation to provide transportation for those who can not afford vehicle ownership?  What is so ridiculous is the camera crew focused in on some of the cars that had been towed....and it's really the sad kind of funny that those who can't afford insurance can afford fancy wheels and tires.  I think it comes down to something called personal responsibility.  If you can't afford the basics, then you most certainly can't afford the luxuries!   So will it also be ok for poor, Hispanic and poor black males to commit other crimes because of their socioeconomic status? Yes, I'm exaggerating, but this mentality makes me cringe.  It's like saying they can't be responsible because of who they are.

Just my thought for the morning!

If they can't afford car insurance, then they don't NEED to be driving. It's bad enough, when I get hit by one of these irresponsible ppl and MY insurance has to pay for my vehicle (we need no fault insurance) but they have NO business being able to continue to drive! Irving already tows if you have no insur. or can't show who you are (illegals. Unfortunately, cops don't always, but always should!)
Yammering about being 'poor or minority', is for the ignorant who see racism where none exist. Sounds like Dallas CC, alright.

but it's a catch 22, if they lose their car and can no longer work it will increase the people who get medicaid, food stamps, help with housing...etc. one must maintain ins but i can understand why some don't

perhaps there just needs to be affordable insurance. my ins. on 2 trucks (full coverage) is $240.00 a month.

Life is hard, but easier here than any other place in the world. They don't have any excuse for breaking the laws that the rest have to follow. Insurance isn't that bad for older cars & for those not having tickets! Either follow the LAW or take the bus!

Can the general public be guaranteed that white police officers will NOT profile minorities and pull them over just to "SEE" if they have insurance or not?

No...you know why? Because whether we like to admit or not, racism is alive and well.

Can we HONESTLY say that minorities will not be the population who suffers the most from this...granted...legitimate...but also...illegitimate (possibly) ordinance?

Hayell NO.

If we could be GAURANTEED that minorities will NOT be profiled, I'm all for it. But, that guarantee is null and void (isn't it), and unless your head in stuck in the sand like an ostrich, you would know that. End racism and this kind of chit will end with it.

This has happened to me to me before. I was pulled over for BS (threw a tiny...I mean TINY piece of paper out the window. You know, when you tear open your cigarette pack and you toss the silver paper out?) I dared him to even find the fingernail size strip of paper. I wasn't ticketed, because he felt stupid. But, I was asked for my insurance. But, man did they look like the racist fool he was when I could produce it!

I've had insurance for the 25+ years I've been driving. Sure isn't fun making that payment every month...but OH WELL. It's something that I have to have to drive a vehicle.

So, quite frankly, don't care what color your skin is...you can't afford insurance, don't drive. Period. I'm sick to death of having higher rates due to other people not doing what is REQUIRED BY LAW. But those of us who do abide by the law end up paying for those who don't. ENOUGH ALREADY.

If you can't afford insurance, you can't afford to drive either. Sometimes reality bites, but it's high time that the remedy for driving without insurance protects the public.

As far as the proposal that this law targets certain groups, I agree that it does. it targets those who place their desires above the law and above the wellbeing of others.

if the minorities wouldn't do 90% of the crimes, then they wouldn't be looked at 90% of the time, facts are facts, they want the easy way, if they want it they steal it instead of working for it..I have been supporting a family since I was 17 and I have never had a government handout...I say put them to walking if stopped with no insurance (everyone that has no insurance) I am tired of paying for them too!!....

If the insurance companies were'nt such thieves like the oil companies, all of us could afford insurance. Also, there are all races of people who don't keep insurance on their cars, so it is not a racist issue, it's the law!!!!!!

I'm with you Char...if you can't afford the full responsibility of car ownership, then take the dang bus!

"Can the general public be guaranteed that white police officers will NOT profile minorities and pull them over just to "SEE" if they have insurance or not?"

No guarantees on that, just like I can't guaratee that a Hispanic or black officer doesn't pull me over because I look white. I fugure that I have the same chance of an angry officer "getting even" as profiling. I give our officers much more credit for a job well done.

I can't believe you owned up to littering and by your post you seem to think it is normal for people to throw out their cigarette junk and it's ok to just throw crap out the window. I really didn't see this coming from you.

I knew someone would take a tiny...TINY piece of paper being tossed out of the window and compare it to a macdonald's bag of trash and litter.

The officer couldn't even find the TINY piece of paper. He only saw me toss a slither of "something" from the window.

Your assessment of this...

I really didn't see this coming from you. I expected a person way more ignorant to make a big deal out of that. Ignorant, just like that officer.

Think whatever you will. I told you, "I'm done".

Texas is a no fault State in a manner of speaking. Where a lot of perpescents occur (on purpose by a perpetrator primarily due to dumbing up at the wheel) is on private property and that is no fault territory. Having no car insurance is just like not having health insurance, those who do have it pay more because of those who do not.

I am married with three grown children. The last one just moved out so we are experiencing "empty nest" quite happily. No dogs, no cats, or anything else to take care of. I am a proud American, Texan and Southern woman. I am very proud of my son, who is serving in the US Navy. I am bilingual as I speak English and Texan. We are currently looking to relocate in Farmers Branch.
