The
AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center reports that Gustav has intensified to a strong tropical storm with maximum-sustained winds of 70 mph.

At 7 a.m. EDT, the storm was 80 miles east of Kingston,
Jamaica, and 170 miles south of Guantanamo, Cuba.
Gustav is forecast to strengthen to a hurricane tonight as the storm pushes away from Jamaica. Expert Senior Meteorologist John Kocet says there is nothing to hamper development as Gustav moves through the western Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. The storm this weekend is forecast to become a major hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph. The storm will pose a serious threat to lives and property next week along the Gulf Coast. All interests from the Florida Panhandle to
Related NewsTropical Depression 8 has strengthened to Tropical Storm Hanna with sustained winds of 40 mph. This system is an environment of warm waters and a low-shear environment. Hanna will move in a northwesterly direction during the next few days with gradual intensification. Hanna is expected to become a hurricane over the weekend. The storm is currently at 20.5 north and 59.2 west or about 305 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands and is moving to the west-northwest at 12 mph. This track will keep the system away from the major island in the Caribbean and the Bahamas in the short term but may become more of a concern for the Bahamas and interests along and off the Atlantic coast late in the weekend and next week as it begins to take a more westerly track. The central pressure is currently 29.59 i
nches.

Fort Lauderdale resident Kevin Kearney is in critical condition Tuesday after attempting to kite surf in Tropical Storm Fay. By News Video Tuesday, August 19, 2008
lFORT LAUDERDALE ? Emergency officials warned South Floridians to seek shelter during Tropical Storm Fay but a man in Fort Lauderdale seeking some thrills on the rough surf didn't heed that warning and ended up in the hospital after being hurt in an astonishing kite boarding accident that was caught on camera
The kite boarder was harnessed into his sail when the wind violently picked him up and slammed him onto the sandy beach. Then, he was dragged across the sand before being lifted up into the air again and blown across the street where the wind slammed him into a building.

Strong winds and downpours will continue to pound South Florida over the next day as Tropical Storm Fay picks up strength on its journey north.
Most of the region, from Monroe County to Palm Beach County, has already been hit with storms and winds associated with the system, last reported over the Florida Straits and making a beeline for the Lower Keys.
A tropical storm warning was extended along Florida's east coast north to Cocoa Beach and all along the west coast.
"Floridians should not focus on the storm track -- it's a broad area where the storm is going to have an impact," said Gov. Charlie Crist. "We want every Floridian and guest to be a survivor. I know it's only a tropical storm, but we take it seriously."

Tornado watches are likely to come later today for South Florida and the Keys, Crist said. South Florida tornadoes are generally small and narrow, but they can still be dangerous. They can easily flip a car or a trailer. Take cover immediately, weather officials said.

Postoffice Street Cam
Once notorious for its bordellos, Postoffice Street was the bustling core of retail commerce in the Southwest's most important Cotton and Oil port. It survived the 1900 Storm and the depression of the 30s only to fall prey to the suburban shift of the 60s and the building of the Houston Ship Channel.
The Postoffice Street restoration of the 90s created a revitalized arts, entertainment, and residential district including more than 25 historic buildings. Besides the growing number of residential lofts, the area includes art galleries, boutiques, and shops.
The Galveston.com Postoffice Street Cam is located at MOD Coffee House.

STS-123 Completes First Full Day in Space
Image above: A look inside the payload bay of space shuttle Endeavour. Credit: NASA TV
Circling the globe aboard space shuttle Endeavour, the STS-123 crew members have completed their first full day in space. The astronauts inspected the orbiter’s heat shield and prepared for their arrival at the International Space Station tonight at 11:25 p.m. EDT.
Crew members used the shuttle’s robotic arm and Orbiter Boom Sensor System (OBSS) to check out the underside of Endeavour and the leading edges of its wings. The purpose of this inspection was to ensure that, during the vehicle’s climb to orbit, no damage occurred to the tiles that protect Endeavour from the heat of reentry.
Endeavour’s crew also extended the Orbiter Docking System Ring and checked out rendezvous tools in preparation for their arrival at the station.
The STS-123 astronauts checked out spacesuits they will use during the mission’s five scheduled spacewalks at the station. Three of these will include tasks devoted to assembly of Dextre, the Canadian Space Agency’s newest contribution to the station and the final element of its Mobile Servicing System, and installation of related equipment. The spacewalkers also will work to unberth from Endeavour’s payload bay the Japanese Logistics Module - Pressurized Section, the first element of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Kibo laboratory.
Other spacewalk activities include the installation of spare parts, tools and a materials experiment, as well as the replacement of a circuit-breaker box and demonstration of a repair procedure for tiles of the shuttle’s heat shield. The astronauts also will stow the OBSS onto the station’s main truss during the fifth spacewalk.
