A 129-year era is set to end at AT&T, as the telecommunications giant will exit the pay phone field by the end of next year, the company said in a written statement Monday.

The move affects approximately 65,000 pay phones in the company's traditional 13-state service area. BellSouth, which was acquired by AT&T in late 2006, became the first major phone company to exit the pay phone business in 2001.

AT&T said reduced pay phone usage, coupled with increased popularity of cellular phones and wireless devices, prompted the move.

Senior Vice President David Huntley said the company will work toward a smooth 13-month transition, as both public pay phones and phones provided under contracts at government correctional facilities will be phased out.

AT&T  said the number of pay phones in use across the industry has declined by approximately 1.6 million since 1998.

One of the largest remaining pay phone providers is Verizon A company spokesman said Verizon owns about 225,000 pay phones in 29 states and the District of Columbia

So why is this news? Well First of all when I was a kid I always saw payphones on every corner while living in CHicago. Not to mention payphones in every restaurant as well as payhones at rest stops..And now to see that they are disappearing... and why..Well the entrance of cellphones is the big reason...Currently there are over  220,000,000 cell phone numbers in the US. So why use a payphone when just about everyone has a cellphone. Well allI can say is I guess this is progress..Things must change...

They've no longer needed... almost everyone has cells & they get vandalized and destroyed. I wonder if the 'land-line' will be next.

We'll be able to 'date' movies where they use public phones, just as we can 'date' them by the LARGE cell phones used 15 yr. ago.

Another reason to get out the payphone business is the rep the private companies have caused with their overpriced service. Most people think all payphones belong to THE phone company in town when it fact they are privately owned. Without regulation these owners can charge whatever they want and the phone company has to deal with the angry public.

Crazy....if you had told me 10 years ago that payphones would become obsolete, I would have laughed.

Naw, land lines will keep put. Burglar alarms for home work off land lines. I know, I wanted to ditch my land and just have cell. Oh well.
That's gonna be weird tho, no pay phones.

I'm glad they're not totally getting rid of pay phones. There IS still a need for them. Not everyone has a cell phone. And, cell phones don't always work. Batteries go dead, signals get dropped...Pay phones pretty much always work (unless someone ripped the handset off...LOL)

Land lines won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Too many people are still on dial-up internet. I was so glad when we ditched it and got cable, but I guess I can see why people don't do it. Dial-up is cheap, everything else is expensive in comparison.

It IS progress and yes, things must change. I never thought I'd see the day when pay phones would become obsolete.

Remember pagers? Who needs them now?

WW is right, though. I guess they can't get rid of ALL pay phones because there are still those who do not own cells.

How much does it cost to place a call on a pay phone nowadays? I haven't used one in a long time. Last I remember, it was 50 cents. How long has it been 50 cents? Used to be a quarter, didn't it?

Shoot, it used to be a dime! My dad used to answer the phone and say, "It's your dime."
