The White House made a stunning admission Wednesday that appeared to suggest President Bush has directly contradicted himself about when he learned U.S. intelligence that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons program.

During a press conference on Tuesday, the President told reporters that he was briefed that there was new intelligence information about Iran,  but nothing specific.

"I was made aware of the NIE last week," Bush said Tuesday. "In August, I think it was [Director of National Intelligence] Mike McConnell came in and said, we have some new information.  He didn't tell me what the information was; he did tell me it was going to take a while to analyze."

However today the White House is saying the President was told much more.

After taking a reporters' question earlier today about exactly what the President was told, White House press secretary Dana Perino provided a response to reporters Wednesday night.

Perino stated Bush had been told in August that Iran suspended it's covert nuclear weapons program.

"In August, DNI Director McConnell advised President Bush that the intelligence community would not be able to meet a congressionally imposed deadline requiring a National Intelligence Estimate on Iran because new information had been obtained just as they were about to finalize the report," Perino wrote in an emailed response.

"He said that if the new information turns out to be true, what we thought we knew for sure is right. Iran does in fact have a covert nuclear weapons program, but it may be suspended," Perino's email said.

Perino also said McConnell told the President the new information might cause the intelligence community to change its assessment of Iran's covert nuclear program.

The latest National Intelligence Estimate -- declassified excerpts of which were released on Monday --  found that Iran actually shelved it's nuclear weapons program in 2003.

Despite the fact that Bush was told in August that U.S. intelligence agencies believed Iran's nuclear weapons program had been halted, the Bush administration continued to raise the rhetoric against Iran, calling for a third round of United Nations sanctions.

The President even warned publicly in October about a World War III if Iran didn't cease their weapons program.

"I've told people that if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them (Iran) from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon," Bush said in OcT.

So again we find out that George W is nothing but a liar.. war mongering fool that will stop at NOTHING to start another WAR!!!..But thats nothing new..We are already fighting wars on 2 fronts..I guess to George whats one more front... Those stupid americans will listen to anything I say....LOL

Believe it or not, I used to respect Bush also, until he referred to the Constitution as a "G*d d*mn piece of paper," and stated that "Bin Laden is no longer important" to him. And then, theres the numerous scandals.....

The references I found about President Bush's calling the Constitution a "_____piece of paper" were on far left web pages. And Keith Olberman apparently mentioned it. One has to be naive to believe without question what comes off a far left web site. If you want, I can cite articles that refute this sleazy piece of malignant rumor/mud-slinging. It is telling that so many are so quick to believe every bad thing they hear or read. What goes on? Are you looking for ways to cause yourselves to be unhappy? The Constitution has not been threatened, the President has not lied, the public is woefully ignorant and ready to believe anything that makes them feel better, especially if it means they can castigate another human being. There have not been numerous scandals - only in the eyes of some people who would be better off in therapy than in the news.

I'm a true independant. I voted for Clinton, then Bush the first time around. I'm not a blind, dedicated, right wing nutjob that can't think for myself even when the worst administation ever is sitting in the White House. I saw Bush and his cronies for what they are..pandering, crooked, liars. I"m still a little surprised and amused when these finatical, right-wingers try to defend the indefensable.

Right Miz, all that junk is mostly demo propaganda. It is ashame that people do not believe that a President only knows what the CIA tells him. And since Nam they were so dismantled, they are no longer dependable.

It's a lost cause, Moankie. We cannot rely on knowledgeable, thinking people to do the right thing. There is no point in trying to get anything across if it remotely absolves President Bush. They hate him and that's that. He could raise the dead and they'd hate him because of his "arrogance". He could cure cirrhosis of the liver and they'd hate him because he lost so many jobs in the medical industry. He could prevent their dying and they'd hate him for not making them rich at the same time.

Will the adm. of this site allow blogs of just certain people? I'd really like to do some brain-storming, but it's impossible with the caterwallering that goes on here. So few are interested in doing anything but complaining about President Bush - I am interested in RESULTS, and it takes people working together for that to occur.
