“Sushi made with deer meat, anyone? How about a slice of raw horse on that rice?” This morning Martin Fackler wrote an article for the New York Times (Waiter, There’s Deer in My Sushi) concerning the shortage of the high quality tuna used for sushi. As the popularity of sushi rises worldwide, the depletion of bluefin tuna is rising, and it doesn’t look like it will stop. This is driving tuna prices up, and forcing Japanese sushi chefs to look for other alternatives. Some are considering using deer or horse meat as substitutes. Other sushi chefs even look to American restaurants for inspiration, bringing back smoked duck or sea urchin sushi ideas.

I think that's barbaric. Why not puppies and kittens while you're at it!!!! I tell ya, it wouldn't take much for me to give up meat, anyway.

I don't understand why it is okay for raw meat to be served in a 'Sushi' restaurant but not any other restaurant?
And as for sushi in general count me out.
As for horse meat, I think that is beyond gross. you're right Char why not puppies and kittens too.

What is barbaric about eating a horse if that is a source of food?

We slaughter and eat cows, chickens, pigs, etc...

Not to say I would eat a horse, but what is the difference?

I love sushi. I was "wigged out" by it the first time I ate it.

Now I eat it about 1-2 times a month.

Cows, chickens and pigs are livestock.

Ponies, puppies and kittens are PETS.
It is abhorrent to think of eating them.

I've only eaten two things in my life that absolutely disgusted me: sushi and blood sausage.

Traditionally, pommes frites, the original French Fries, were cooked in horse fat. I don't think I could eat horse unless there was something seriously wrong going on. Lately I am even having problems eating beef. But on the other hand, the vegans that want people to stop eating meat claim that they will save animals lives. Seriously, who do you know that will keep a cow, a pig or a chicken as a pet? There may be a few, but generally speaking the only reason there are so many herd type animals is because they provide meat and leather. Facts, as they say, is facts.

No sushi for me. My wife likes it, but having a basic background in biology, I have trouble eathing anything unless it is well done.

I might have eaten a number of questionable meats, with all the places in Southeast Asia I've visited. It is best not to ask...but at least it was cooked.

I would love to try some sushi

But first they are going to have to roll it in yellow cornmeal and deep fry it

What the heck is blood sausage?Sounds awful.
I've tried alligator and also rattle snake and they both tasted a lil like chicken actually, but not raw, batter it up and fry it.I have a younger brother and he loves calf fries..now thats just plain ol nasty to me.

Willie, deer jerky is good stuff. So is deer sausage, and black bean/corn deer salsa. Elk is even better. Think I will pass on the horsemeat.

Have you ever been deer hunting in New Mexico Marks? The deer are very large, about 3 or 4 times bigger than the ones I have seen in Texas. Lots of Elk too.
Making me hungry for venison.
I made some cornbread with cheese and ham in it this morning. I was raised up on that cornbread, good stuff.

When we go to Red River, we always first go North to Raton from 87 North. From there South on I-25 to the 64 cut-off. Just a few minutes on 64, at night, you can see herds of elk crossing the road, as well as deer. Awesome sight ! You may even see Ted Turner's huge herd of buffalo as you get closer to cimarron. Hunting in New Mexico is far better than Texas.
